HI San Francisco Downtown Hostel

Staying here is better than staying in Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons or Marriot or Hilton. HI hostel is better than all those hotels I mentioned. The staff working here are smiling all the time and friendly people. The area is located in a quiet neighborhood. It’s calm and surrounded by shops . The people in the dorms are sane and normal and smell good. The hostel is brand new and the elevator is brand new

Wonderful location near the train station and downtown. Breakfast includes fruit and bagels. The hostel is historic and the rooms reflect this. The common areas are full of lounge furniture. There is a board with recommendations of quick eats, tours, and events in the area. Staff are very helpful and check your credentials before they let individuals in after hours.

The stay was quite good, 5 stars for the location, the spacious and beautiful kitchen, the laundry facilities, the cleanliness, and the fact that it has an elevator. I'm deducting a few stars for the small rooms and the service (especially a gentleman on the afternoon shift, who seemed to be bothering me when I asked him anything). The lady who checked me in early was pleasant and helpful. More info: Location: fantastic, practically around the corner from Union Square, 5 minutes from Powell Street (the subway stop for the airport), and steps from Market Street with many shops, including IKEA, Ross, Levi's, and Trader Joe's. There are restaurants of all tastes everywhere. I felt safe at night. It's somewhat on the border with the Tenderloin, the rougher part of the city… but aside from the occasional shouting lunatic, there's nothing to worry about. Buses pass right by the hotel to all destinations. Room: I rented a bed in a female dorm room, facing the building's central courtyard, super quiet (except when doors were opening and closing) for less than $40 USD. It includes a bed, sheets, towel, and a sink in the room. Breakfast is not included. The toilets and showers are shared and unisex, and are located in various places on each floor. Everything is very clean. You make your own bed. The mattress has a spill-proof plastic cover. There are air purifiers in each room. Each bed has a light, a shelf, and electrical outlets 👍🏼. I did find the rooms a bit small; for example, if you opened a suitcase on the floor, everyone else had to maneuver around it to get past. Common areas: given the number of people there, I think they're a bit small. In the lobby on the ground floor, they offer free coffee all day; you can also buy drinks, basic medications, flip-flops; they have earplugs available. If you arrive early, they can store your luggage for a few hours until you can check in. Kitchen: beautiful, spacious, lots of tables, and huge refrigerators for storing your things and cooking. P.S.: The building is still covered in scaffolding (May 26). Since I was there Saturday and Sunday and out all day, I didn't hear any noise or machinery. Don't expect a great view either, as all the buildings in the area are tall, so you'll be looking at the street, parking lot, or other neighbors' windows.

Good place for transit layover, frugal and reliable while you are traveling for work.

I chose a cheaper option because I was leaving early in the morning, but it was more comfortable than I expected. It's a gentle uphill walk from the subway station, and you arrive fairly quickly. There was also an escalator at the exit. The hotel entrance is locked, but the front desk staff open it for check-in. The check-in process was quick, and I was escorted to the elevator. The elevator doors were manually operated, which was unusual. The room had a lockable basket under the bed for storing suitcases and other luggage, allowing for safe storage. The room was clean, odorless, and comfortable. There were shower rooms on each floor, and they were spacious and clean. Some people couldn't sleep because of the loud noises (shouting) from outside until late at night.

The price and location cover all the downsides.

Awesome location and it really helped being close to public transportation. Everything was handled really well and i did not face any issues for the 3 nights i stayed here. Will definitely be using HI hostels going forward:)

One of the cheapest hotel you'll find in San Francisco. Despite the fact that it's a cheapest hotel, but surprisingly they really focus on every department, like rooms, bathroom, washroom, stairs, lift, etc. Food is also great, you won't disappoint. Overall highly recommended by me.

Great hostel, good laundry machines, kitchen, etc. Getting a private room here is usually cheaper and nicer than a hotel because you have the kitchen and laundry.
