Safety notice for LGBTQ+ travellers to Egypt: While no specific law criminalises homosexuality in Egypt, police routinely use vague "debauchery," "public morals," and "contempt of religion" laws to prosecute LGBTQ+ people — with sentences of up to 17 years documented. Most concerning: • Police entrapment via Grindr, Hornet, and other apps is well-documented and ongoing. • The 2017 "Rainbow Flag" case (concert attendees who raised a Pride flag) led to dozens of arrests and lengthy sentences. • Forced anal examinations by authorities are documented as a basis for prosecution. • Foreign nationals have been prosecuted, including a 2021 case involving a US citizen. No openly gay venues operate in Egypt. The scene is entirely underground. If you visit: • Do NOT use LGBTQ+ dating apps while in Egypt. Multiple foreigners have been arrested via Grindr. • Be extremely discreet in all public contexts. • Stay at international-chain hotels. • Memorise Bedayaa's emergency line (the Egyptian LGBTQ+ rights group operating from abroad). • Don't post LGBTQ+ content on social media accessible to authorities.
