Are There Gay Bars in Riverhead?
Riverhead is a small rural township on the upper Waitematā Harbour, about 25 kilometres north-west of central Auckland. It is a quiet, family-oriented community, and it has no dedicated gay bars or clubs of its own. The village centre has a handful of general cafes, a historic riverside tavern and the well-known Hallertau craft brewery, all of which are relaxed and welcoming, but none are LGBTQ+ venues.
Where the Scene Actually Is
For gay nightlife, the destination is Auckland, roughly 30-40 minutes away by car. The heart of the scene is Karangahape Road - locals call it "K" Road - a long-standing hub for alternative and LGBTQ+ culture in the central city.
The best-known venues include Family Bar, a flagship multi-level dance club; the Eagle, a relaxed local gay bar; Caluzzi, a much-loved drag dinner cabaret; G.A.Y Auckland, a lively bar and club; and Good Times. Auckland's two established gay saunas, Centurian and Wingate, are also in the central city.
Making a Night of It
Many LGBTQ+ visitors use Riverhead and the surrounding Rodney countryside as a quiet base and head into Auckland for the evening. Buses connect Riverhead to the city centre, and ride-share services run on K Road, which stays busy late into the night. New Zealand decriminalised homosexuality in 1986 and legalised same-sex marriage in 2013, and Auckland is a safe, easy-going place for a night out.
When to Visit
The biggest date on the calendar is Auckland Pride each February, built around a community-led Pride March along Ponsonby Road and the free Big Gay Out fair day. It is a perfect time to combine a rural stay in Riverhead with the city's festivities.
