Belgio has legal protections for same-sex couples and is generally welcoming to LGBTQ+ travelers. Major cities and tourist destinations are the most established; see each city page for the current scene and venue reviews.
Yes — same-sex marriage is legal in Belgio. See the Legal Status panel on this page for the specifics. Belgium was the second country in the world to open marriage to same-sex couples, in 2003, after legal cohabitation in 2000. Joint and step-child adoption followed in 2006, lesbian couples have had IVF access since 2006 and automatic co-mother recognition since 2015. Discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation has been banned since 2003 and gender identity and expression since 2014. Legal gender change has been possible since 2007 and since 2018 works by self-declaration, with no surgery or sterilisation. Conversion therapy was banned in 2023 and the blood donation deferral for gay and bisexual men has been cut to four months. Same-sex relations themselves have been legal since 1795. ILGA-Europe ranked Belgium third in Europe in 2024. Public support for same-sex marriage is above 80 percent. Brussels has a compact gay district around Rue du Marché au Charbon, Antwerp a larger one, and Belgian Pride in May fills the capital. Street harassment in Brussels is the one recurring complaint in community surveys.
