Paraportiani Church

Let's revisit the sights we missed. This church isn't very big and isn't great for taking photos, but it's still beautiful because it's right next to the sea.

I don't know if you can go inside, but both times I've been there it was closed. It's called that because when it was built it was next to the city gate; in fact, the neighborhood is called Castro because of that wall. The white is so bright that all the tourists stop to take a picture in front of it. Construction began in the 15th century.

The Church of Panagia Paraportiani is a representative white church of Mykonos, and its soft, curved exterior, characteristic of Cycladic architecture, was very impressive. Its structure is also distinctive, as it is made up of five small chapels built between the 15th and 17th centuries. It blends beautifully with the surrounding white cityscape, and it naturally catches the eye as you walk around. Especially in the evening, the contrast of light and shadow is strong, making it easy to understand why it's such a popular photo spot. —Visited June 2025

We only saw the church from the outside. Architecturally, it's a very beautiful church.

The snow-white church of Panagia Paraportani is an important spiritual, cultural, and historical landmark. Construction of this church began in 1425 and was completed only in the 17th century. The church consists of five chapels, four of which form the base of a fifth, rising above them like a dome. It's clear that every tourist who has visited Mykonos has a photo of this church.
