Praia 19 Dunes (Cruising Area)

The dunes and umbrella-pine woodland directly behind Praia 19 — Costa da Caparica's celebrated gay and naturist beach — form one of the best-known outdoor cruising areas on the Lisbon coast. Activity concentrates in the sandy paths and low scrub between the beach and the old Transpraia railway track, and picks up through the afternoon and early evening in the warmer months (roughly May to September), when the beach itself is busiest. The spot is long-standing and, in line with Portugal's liberal legal climate, generally tolerated, but it sits inside the Arriba Fossil da Costa da Caparica protected landscape, so discretion is expected: keep to the informal paths, respect other beachgoers and the dune vegetation, and remember this is an open natural area with no facilities. Bring water and sun protection. As with any cruising location, meet with care, look after your belongings and trust your instincts.
