Asia's biggest gay party week, disguised as a national water fight

G Circuit is what happens when Songkran — Thailand's Buddhist New Year, five days of country-wide water-throwing, the joke of a "religious festival" everyone secretly plans a year around — collides with the international gay circuit. For most Thais, mid-April is the world's largest water fight. For the tens of thousands of gay men who fly in from Sydney, LA, Berlin, Tokyo and half of Latin America, it's the biggest circuit event in Asia, produced continuously since 2004 by the crew that also runs White Party Bangkok. The magic is the double reality: everything you love about Songkran (soaking strangers on Silom Road at 3pm while the temperature reads 39°C) plus a nightly headline circuit party until the sun comes up. Thailand runs on this rhythm — you'll dance more, sleep less, and drink more Chang beer than you thought your kidneys allowed.

The most internationally mixed circuit crowd on earth. American and Australian core, huge Latin American presence (Brazil especially), a serious East Asian contingent (Japan, Taiwan, Korea), Northern Europeans in force, and Thai gay men in numbers that make it clear whose home this actually is. The vibe is warmer than XLSIOR's, less curated than Circuit Barcelona's, and infinitely less pretentious than either — the water-fight-then-circuit-party rhythm makes it structurally impossible to take yourself too seriously by day three. Expect the standard shirtless circuit army, but also expect it to be soaking wet and holding a Super Soaker.

"The first-time mistake is trying to keep your phone dry. Buy a waterproof pouch at 7-Eleven for 90 baht on day one. Trust me. Or don't, and see what saltwater does to a Pixel."
— Dana, 39, Melbourne (third Songkran running)

The week — day fights and night parties

Songkran officially runs April 13-15, but the G Circuit calendar stretches around it — usually 5-6 nights of headline parties in Bangkok's biggest rooms. The signature program shape:

Passes cover the club nights; the water fight is priced by whoever owns your dignity that day.

The heat is the story

Not a joke. Songkran is Thailand's hottest week — regularly 38-40°C by 14:00. The water fight is functionally a coping mechanism the whole country invented. Two rules the flyer won't put on it: hydrate with water not Chang (you cannot out-drink 40°C sun on a Silom sidewalk, and the hospital stops are real), and sunscreen every three hours, because you're getting hosed off every ten minutes and half your protection washes away with it.

The real budget

Thailand keeps this the most affordable major circuit week in the world by a long stretch. Full G Circuit passes typically run ~฿10,000-15,000 (~$280-420), individual events ฿1,500-3,000, hotel rooms in Sukhumvit tourist-grade at $80-150/night even during peak, and street food at Thai prices. Flights are the real cost — get them locked six months out or spend the difference on the pass. Honest all-in for a week: $1,500-2,500 all-in from Europe or North America, and about half of that if you're already in Asia.

Where it sits on the world calendar

Every April, this and Sydney Mardi Gras (six weeks earlier) are the two biggest gay draws in Asia-Pacific. Do both in one two-month tour and you've basically covered Southern Hemisphere gay season. And unlike XLSIOR or Circuit Barcelona, the surrounding city is a full itinerary in its own right — nobody flies to Mykonos for the museums, but plenty stay in Thailand a full two weeks post-Songkran with beach days in Phuket or Koh Samui bolted on the end.
