On Saturday night we experienced a very uncomfortable situation at Bar 105. We frequently went to this establishment, which boasts of belonging to the LGBTQ+ community, even adorning its facade with the respective flags. Many times we went with heterosexual, cis, and trans female friends, as we thought it was a safe place and they were allowed entry to the 1st floor (but not to the 2nd floor, which only allows "men"). However, this past Saturday, we went to the establishment as a group. They allowed us to enter, and once inside, they detained one of the people with us and asked "if they were a man or a woman." This person identified as non-binary. Upon hearing this, "Rod," the owner (or manager) of the establishment, in an obviously annoyed tone, demanded their ID. He took it and shoved it in their face in a demeaning manner, saying (and I quote), "Your ID has 'F' for female, so you can't come in." We asked for an explanation, considering that they had never previously denied entry to women and other diverse identities who were with us, but in a contemptuous tone, clearly intending to kick us out, the owner told us, "The rules of this establishment have changed, so you can't come in." Obviously, we left and never returned. What would happen if one night a trans man who is recently transitioning came to the establishment and, in the owner's "judgment," wasn't "masculine" enough? Is the owner going to ask this person for their ID, and if it's not updated with the correct gender, is he going to tell them (like he did last night) that it's marked "F" for "female," therefore they can't enter because they only accept "men"? It's obvious that the establishment has every right to decide who they want to admit; however, there are very personal issues that can be highly sensitive for some people and can affect them much more than just having a bad time. One would expect that establishments founded by the LGBTQ+ community would have a particularly developed sensitivity and tact when addressing certain topics with the public that visits them and belongs to the same "community." My motivation here isn't to publicly shame the establishment, mainly because it's a source of employment for several people in our "community." In fact, the people who work as servers or behind the bar have always been very respectful. In this particular case, it's the owner himself who should be trained to learn how to treat the people who frequent the place with respect. My motivation is rather to encourage reflection, especially during this Pride month and even more so under the context of the rise of the far right that we are experiencing... What kind of "community" do we want to build?

Cool, male-only, unpretentious bar with good music for the 30+ crowd. Well-made cocktails, friendly bar staff & open-minded clientele. Upstairs offers a darker, intimate space.
