Daniel Zamudio Memorial

In March 2012, 24-year-old Daniel Zamudio was attacked in Parque San Borja for being gay, tortured over hours, and died of his injuries three weeks later. The crime shocked Chile profoundly enough to break a legislative deadlock: within months, the country passed its anti-discrimination statute, known ever since simply as the Ley Zamudio. A memorial plaque was unveiled at the site in 2014, bearing the words 'Tu destino está en los demás, tu dignidad es la de todos' — your destiny is in others, your dignity is everyone's — beside a tree planted where he was found. Honesty requires saying the site is modest and has been reported neglected; a promised renaming of the park for Zamudio remains unfulfilled, and the fuller memorial — 58 plaques for victims of anti-LGBT violence, placed by Movilh — stands in the Cementerio General. Visiting: the park is public and free, near Metro Universidad Católica; daylight visits advised.
