Come up the escalators at Beaudry station on a November night and rue Sainte-Catherine Est is already glowing: terraces packed away for the winter, steam from the vents, men in toques ducking out of a dépanneur with a six-pack. Montreal's Village runs for a dozen blocks east of here, and in the middle of it, behind ordinary doors, are three men's saunas that never close. That is the heart of cruising in this city. Montreal does it indoors and around the clock: three 24-hour saunas in the Village, a century-old bathhouse in the Plateau, a couple of leather-leaning bars where the back room still does its job, and, for the rest, the apps. The mountain in the middle of the city has a cruising history, but the saunas are where the action is in 2026.

Legal in one line: Canada has had nationwide same-sex marriage since 2005, and sexual orientation and gender identity are protected from discrimination. Saunas are legal private venues for adults; sex in a public place is not (it's an "indecent act" under section 173 of the Criminal Code). The drinking age in Quebec is 18.

How cruising works in Montreal

Almost everything happens in and around the Village (le Village), the stretch of rue Sainte-Catherine Est roughly between Saint-Hubert and Papineau, served by Beaudry and Papineau metro stations on the green line. The three Village saunas are all listed as open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and they are within a ten-minute walk of each other, so you can look in on one and move on. Travel Gay puts the peak at G.I. Joe between midnight and 3am, after the bars wind down; Saturday afternoons are also busy, according to The Gay Passport. Bring photo ID: the saunas are 18+.

The Village saunas

All three below are men-only cruising saunas with lockers, rentable rooms, steam and dark corners. More detail and prices are on our Montreal saunas page.

Sauna G.I. Joe · 1166 rue Sainte-Catherine Est

The westernmost of the three, nearest Beaudry. misterb&b describes about 14,000 sq ft over four floors plus a large roof terrace, with play areas on each floor; Travel Gay lists private rooms and cabins, slings, hot tubs, glory holes, a dry sauna, a steam room, a TV lounge, a dark room and the roof terrace, and other listings add a dungeon room. It leans towards fetish and leather, with themed nights. It closed for nearly a year after a fire and reopened in July 2024 after a refurbishment, according to Travel Gay, which updated its listing in August 2026 and calls it the most visited gay sauna in Montreal. Open 24/7. misterb&b lists lockers from CA$16 and rooms for 6, 12 or 24 hours, with in-and-out privileges on 24-hour rentals; check current prices at the desk. Phone +1 514 528 3326.

Sauna Oasis · 1390 rue Sainte-Catherine Est

A big, no-frills house in the middle of the Village. Gay Party Blog (February 2026) describes about 10,000 sq ft with a large shower area, a lounge with a pool table, a steam room, a hot tub, a dry sauna, porn-viewing areas, cabins and dark corners; Travel Gay adds glory holes and a snack bar. Its best-known promise, reported by Gay Party Blog and Out x Out: your admission is refunded if fewer than ten other men are inside (Out x Out says within your first two hours; ask at the desk). Open 24/7. It has no website of its own, so look for it on social media or phone +1 514 521 0785.

Sauna Centre-Ville · 1465 rue Sainte-Catherine Est

The older, quieter choice, almost opposite Oasis. Travel Gay lists about 60 single, double and deluxe rooms over two levels, a whirlpool, a dry sauna, a steam room and a bar, and mentions a 50% student discount. Reviewers describe a mostly over-40 crowd, more locals than tourists, busier after about 9pm. Open 24/7. Phone +1 514 524 3486.

Bain Colonial: the historic one

Bain Colonial, at 3963 avenue Coloniale in the Plateau, a short ride north of the Village, has been a bathhouse since 1914 and men-only since 1994, according to The Gay Passport. Travel Gay lists a natural stone steam system, a sauna, whirlpools, private cabins, massage and a terrace with city views. Unlike the Village saunas it keeps daytime hours: Monday to Saturday 12:00–22:00 and Sunday 12:00–20:00, as listed by Travel Gay. Phone +1 514 285 0132 before going.

Closed: Sauna St-Hubert, at 6527 rue Saint-Hubert, north of the Plateau, is marked closed by GayCities and Yelp. Don't confuse it with the Saint-Hubert district of Longueuil, on the South Shore, where the Quebec sauna directory saunasgais.ca lists Sauna Carpediem; we couldn't confirm its current hours, so phone first.

Cruise bars

Montreal has no dedicated darkroom club in 2026 that we could confirm. What it has are a few men's bars where the night turns into a pick-up. Both of the bars below are listed as open until 3am.

Aigle Noir (Black Eagle) · 1315 rue Sainte-Catherine Est

A leather bar with a mixed crowd of daddies, bears and men in denim. Travel Gay lists two bars and a terrace that fills up at weekends, says the back bar is the better spot for cruising, and calls it "quite a pickup joint" as the night goes on. Out x Out, updating its Montreal bar guide in October 2026, still lists it as the Village's cruise bar. Listed open daily from 08:00 to 03:00; nearest metro Beaudry.

Le Stud · 1812 rue Sainte-Catherine Est

At the eastern end of the Village, near Papineau. Its motto, according to Travel Gay, is "a bar for men, where men like men": a men-only bar and dance floor with dark corners, house DJs at weekends, and a crowd of bears and leathermen. Out x Out lists leather, kink, bear and underwear theme nights. Listed open daily from 14:00 to 03:00.

Bar Rocky

An old-school tavern at the Papineau end of the Village, with cheap beer, an older crowd and adult films on the TVs, as described by Out x Out and Gay Mapper. It's a place to meet, not a backroom.

The Village's male strip bars, Stock Bar, Campus and Taboo, have dancers most nights; they're shows, not cruising venues. For the full list of bars and clubs, see our Montreal bars guide.

Cinéma L'Amour

Cinéma L'Amour, on boulevard Saint-Laurent in the Plateau, is one of the last adult cinemas in North America. The building opened in 1914 as Le Globe, a Yiddish-language cinema, became The Hollywood in 1932 and the Pussycat erotic cinema in 1969, and has been Cinéma L'Amour since 1981, run by the same family. The Beaux-Arts interior is almost unchanged. It is a mixed venue: it shows mainly straight porn, has a couples-only mezzanine, and hosts concerts, film nights and events. It has publicly welcomed LGBTQ+ customers, and from October 2024 Wednesdays were "Trans Night". Go for the building and the atmosphere, not for a men's cruising scene.

Mont Royal

Parc du Mont-Royal, the wooded mountain at the centre of the city, has a long cruising history. Travel Gay puts its best-known period from the 1960s to the 1990s, around the wooded trails and viewpoints near the summit and towards Beaver Lake (lac aux Castors). Today it's one of the city's busiest parks: joggers, cyclists, families, dog walkers, tourists at the Kondiaronk lookout, and cross-country skiers in winter. We found no recent independent reports on how active cruising is there now; most of it has moved to the saunas and the apps.

The law:

    • Section 173 of the Criminal Code makes it an offence to commit an indecent act in a public place in the presence of one or more people, or anywhere with intent to insult or offend someone. A park, a trail or a car park is a public place at any hour.
    • Section 174 makes it an offence to be nude in a public place, or nude on private property exposed to public view, without lawful excuse.
    • Meeting someone in a park and going somewhere private is legal. Sex in the bushes is not, and a conviction can follow you across borders.

Safety: quiet paths are where thieves look for men who won't call the police. Respect the hours posted at the park entrances, go while there's still light, carry only your phone, one card and a little cash, tell a friend where you are, and leave if something feels wrong. The slopes are steep and icy in winter. In an emergency, call 911. The saunas are warm, legal and open all night.

    Apps

    • Grindr and Scruff are the main apps; Sniffies, the map-based cruising app, is widely used across North America for real-time meet-ups.
    • Profiles switch between French and English, often in the same sentence. A bonjour goes a long way.
    • If you're hosting, meet in a bar first, share your location with a friend, and never hand your unlocked phone to a stranger.

    Local colour

Fuel the Montreal way: a poutine (chips, cheese curds that squeak, gravy) at 2am, a smoked-meat sandwich on rye, or a bagel from the wood-fired ovens of the Mile End. Buy beer at a dépanneur, the corner shop, and drink it on a terrasse when the weather allows. In summer, part of Sainte-Catherine Est is turned into a pedestrian street and the Village lives outdoors; from December to March, it moves inside, and a steam room never feels better than on a January night at −20 °C.

    Practical tips

    • Entry: pay at the desk for a locker (casier) or a room (chambre, cabine) for a set number of hours. Bring photo ID; some saunas offer student or daytime rates, so ask.
    • Dress code: none at the saunas beyond a towel. At the Aigle Noir and Le Stud, leather, denim or gear fit in on theme nights; check their social media for the night's dress code.
    • Lockers and phones: leave your passport and spare cards at the hotel, lock everything, and never take photos inside a sauna or backroom.
    • Consent: a hand moved away or a non merci is a no. Respect it every time.
    • PrEP and condoms: bring your own PrEP if you use it; condoms and lube are reported free at G.I. Joe and Centre-Ville.
    • PEP: if a condom breaks or you're exposed to HIV, PEP has to start as soon as possible and within 72 hours. Go to a hospital emergency department (urgence), or contact the sexual-health services of the CIUSSS du Centre-Sud, whose nurses can start PEP under a public-health protocol; sexual-health clinics such as the Clinique l'Actuel can also help. Phone first if you can, but don't wait.
    • Chems: if GHB/GBL is around, never mix it with alcohol and never dose someone else. Call 911 in an emergency.
    • Metro: the STM metro runs from about 05:30 until about 00:30, and until about 01:00 on Saturday nights; check the STM website for the last trains on your line. Beaudry and Papineau (green line) serve the Village, and Sherbrooke (orange line) is the station Travel Gay gives for Bain Colonial.
    • Night buses: when the metro closes, more than 20 night bus routes, numbered in the 300s, cover the island at the same fare as daytime service. A taxi or Uber is the easy option from a sauna at 4am.
    • Winter: bring a proper coat, gloves and boots from December to March; pavements can be icy between venues.

    Fierté Montréal 2026

Fierté Montréal, the city's Pride festival, held its 20th edition from 31 July to 9 August 2026 under the theme Brillons ensemble (Let's shine together). The Community Days ran on 7 and 8 August, and the parade closed the festival on Sunday 9 August, starting at 13:00 on boulevard René-Lévesque at Robert-Bourassa and finishing at Atateken. The organisers reported more than a million participants across the festival, and nearly 20,000 marchers and over 200,000 spectators at the parade. The 2027 dates hadn't been announced at the time of writing; check Fierté Montréal's website. Expect the saunas to be at their busiest during Pride week.

Frequently asked questions

Where do gay men cruise in Montreal?

Mostly in the Village saunas on rue Sainte-Catherine Est. G.I. Joe, Oasis and Centre-Ville are all listed as open 24 hours, and Bain Colonial in the Plateau opens afternoons and evenings. The Aigle Noir and Le Stud are the leather-leaning bars where men go to pick each other up, and Grindr, Scruff and Sniffies fill in the rest.

Which gay saunas are open in Montreal in 2026?

Four, as far as we can tell: Sauna G.I. Joe at 1166, Sauna Oasis at 1390 and Sauna Centre-Ville at 1465 rue Sainte-Catherine Est, plus Bain Colonial at 3963 avenue Coloniale. G.I. Joe reopened in July 2024 after a fire. Sauna St-Hubert on rue Saint-Hubert is closed.

Is cruising on Mont Royal legal?

Walking in the park and meeting someone there is legal; sex there is not. Section 173 of the Criminal Code makes an indecent act in a public place, in the presence of one or more people, an offence, and section 174 covers public nudity. Robbery is also a risk on quiet paths after dark.

Is Cinéma L'Amour a gay cinema?

No. It is a mixed adult cinema on boulevard Saint-Laurent that has shown erotic films in the same building since 1969, with a couples-only mezzanine. It has publicly welcomed LGBTQ+ customers and, from October 2024, ran a weekly Trans Night on Wednesdays, but it is not a men's cruising venue.

When was Fierté Montréal 2026?

From 31 July to 9 August 2026, the festival's 20th edition. The parade ran on Sunday 9 August from 1pm along boulevard René-Lévesque, from Robert-Bourassa to Atateken. Expect the saunas to be at their busiest that week.
