El Baile de los 41 — Memorial Plaque

On November 18, 1901, police raided a private dance in Mexico City and arrested 42 men, many of them aristocrats, some in gowns. Officially only 41 were recorded — the forty-second, legend and evidence agree, was President Porfirio Díaz's own son-in-law, erased from the record. The scandal of 'los 41' became Mexico's founding queer story: the number itself was for a century a slur, a joke, a code — and eventually a badge reclaimed. On the raid's centenary in 2001, the LGBT community placed what it called a reparation plaque on the wall beside the Centro Cultural José Martí, facing the Alameda Central. The bronze relief by gay sculptor Reynaldo Velázquez shows two nude male figures whose bent legs discreetly form the number 41.
