Wanted to love TBD. The hype is real, but after spending $300 for two, I left disappointed. The sashimi was genuinely good, and the kakuni mochi and chicken oyster were fantastic. Servers were friendly and attentive, no complaints there. But the misses outweighed the hits. The A5 Kobe was underwhelming, and cooking it yourself at the table meant oil splattering everywhere. The tuna Wellington just made me wish I was eating an actual beef Wellington. It didn't work. The sasami (rare chicken) was forgettable, and most dishes ran oversalted. The hojicha tiramisu leaned way too sweet. We came specifically for the fried chicken and they'd already sold out. The space itself is beautiful. We sat in a cozy nook surrounded by glass windows, but a spotlight directly above our table was genuinely blinding. When we asked to have it turned off, they said they couldn't, and apparently we weren't the first to ask. That one issue killed the ambiance for the entire meal. I respect what they're going for here, but at this price point, the execution needs to match the presentation. If you're craving fun Japanese food, Aburaya in Oakland delivers better for a fraction of the cost.

If I could give it ✨♾️🌟 I would. I used to come to this location for the old sushi restaurant that has moved to a bigger and better location by now. But 431 Bush is still a home away from home. With new Japanese 🇯🇵 restaurant, old memories are coming back and new taste experiences are being formed. What Chef Ray and the team have created is simply mind- blowing 🤩🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 you have to be here to believe it

I was stunned at everything we ordered from TBD. Service was incredible, the atmosphere was cozy, and the menu options were diverse and delicious. Our server recommended a delicious sake paired with dinner and we got two things from each section of the menu. The Hot Karaage was genuinely one of the best things I have ever eaten and the Okonomiyaki was a surprising favorite. I will be back! My only note is that I wish they had a tasting menu, but I’m so happy with this dinner!

the spot was cute and all the dishes were conceptually creative and non standard. i think the things were overly fried / crispy, smaller appetizers plates perhaps a bit too slowly to affect temp / texture, and flavors were just ok. the sansho pepper yakitori piece, chazuke, and tiramisu were highlights for us.
