KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens) is Berlin's best-known department store, on Wittenbergplatz since 1907. It sells luxury fashion and homeware over several floors, and its food hall on the upper floors is the main reason many visitors go. It's a mainstream store, listed here because it sits a few minutes' walk from the gay bars around Nollendorfplatz. It's open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 8pm and closed on Sunday, like most German shops. Saturday afternoons are the most crowded. Go on a weekday morning if you want to see the food hall without the queues.

KeDeWe is alright. The best part is the food court. Personally, I find the department store too elitist. That's why I only come here every two or three years.
