The honest summary: Mexico City has the biggest gay scene in Latin America, and most of it fits into a few blocks of Zona Rosa. Add the old cantina-cabarets on República de Cuba in the Centro, a smaller and younger scene in Roma and Condesa, six bathhouses, a dozen cruising clubs and porn cinemas, and a Pride march the city government counted at about 550,000 people in 2026. It is cheap by North American standards, loud, late, very local, and better organised than its reputation. The catch is the usual big-city one: bills that grow on their own in some Zona Rosa bars, phone theft, and dating-app robberies. This guide was checked against gaymexicomap.com, Time Out Mexico, Chilango, Travel Gay and the venues' own pages in October 2026.
Legal in one line: sex between men has been legal in Mexico since the 1871 Penal Code; Mexico City passed same-sex marriage and adoption in December 2009 (in force 4 March 2010) and every state had marriage equality by October 2022; legal gender change has been an administrative procedure with no medical requirements since 2015; conversion therapy is a crime in the city (2020) and nationally (2024). After a Penal Code reform published in March 2026, the effective age of consent in Mexico City is 15.
Where the scene is
Zona Rosa (Colonia Juárez). The core is pedestrianised Calle Amberes, with rainbow crossings, between Reforma and Avenida Chapultepec, plus the side streets Londres, Florencia, Niza, Génova, Hamburgo and Estrasburgo. The district got its name from the artist José Luis Cuevas, and El Nueve, the first openly gay bar and cultural venue, opened on Calle Londres in 1977. Today there are more than two dozen gay bars and clubs within about six blocks. Locals complain that it has become a tourist strip, but new openings keep coming. Metro Insurgentes and the Hamburgo Metrobús stop are on its edge. See the Zona Rosa heritage page.
Centro Histórico: República de Cuba and Eje Central. The old-town gay street is República de Cuba, a few blocks north of the Zócalo: cantina-cabarets with drag shows, cheap beer and a working-class local crowd. Eje Central Lázaro Cárdenas, the avenue past Bellas Artes and Garibaldi, has more clubs and most of the city's cruising venues.
Roma and Condesa. The leafy neighbourhoods south of Zona Rosa are mixed rather than gay, with a younger queer crowd in cafés and a handful of dedicated venues: Revuelta Queer House on Puebla, the Foro Roma building on Coahuila, TOM'S Leather Bar on Insurgentes Sur and Chaarm by 42 in Condesa.
Bars and clubs in Zona Rosa
Kinky Bar at Amberes 1 is the busiest: three floors, three concepts and a young crowd from Thursday to Sunday. The Cabaré-Tito group runs Cabaretito Fusión (Londres 77, the big drag and show club), Cabaretito Punto y Aparte (Amberes 61, upstairs) and El Taller, the historic basement bar under El Almacén at Florencia 37-B, which reopened after closing in 2013. Next door at Florencia 35-B, Vaqueros is the cowboy and bear bar; Nicho Bears & Bar on Londres is the bear headquarters and co-hosts Bearmex's Bear Pride week in June.
For dancing, Blow Bar (Niza 40, three floors and a darkroom), Rico Club (Niza 45), Baby (Londres 179), Malva (Amberes 21, three levels and a rooftop), Kilens and the new Penthouse rooftop at Niza 42, with the Voltaire drag cabaret downstairs. Rico Club was shut twice by the borough in 2025-26, the second time after an assault by its security staff, and reopened by court order in April 2026. Go-go and stripper bars cluster at the Amberes and Estrasburgo corner: Macho, The Babilon Club and Papi Fun Bar. Quieter starts: the small cocktail bar La Belle Epoque, Abrazarnos on Hamburgo (opened 2025) and the mixed karaoke cantina Las Bohemias.
Women.Babiana Club on Londres is the established lesbian club and Amazonas Club Less on General Prim has drag king shows. Cabaretito Fusión runs a lesbian night on Thursdays, and sapphic parties such as Ele Saficlub and Cantina Lencha move between venues, so check their social media.
Juárez east. At Versalles 64, Estéreo runs Fridays and [sic] Saturdays, with house, techno and a darkroom.
On República de Cuba: La Purísima ("La Puri", number 17), Marrakech Salón ("El Marra", number 18), Soberbia (number 2), El Pecado (45-B) and the smaller Sodoma. Expect drag, cheap drinks and a packed, sweaty room. The city closed La Puri, El Marra and Soberbia together on 17 January 2025 for overcrowding (Chilango); all three have reopened. On Eje Central, Teatro Garibaldi by Plaza Garibaldi is a cheap gay club with strippers, and La Malagueña plays banda; El Tahúr on Belisario Domínguez is an old cantina for older men. Across from El Marra, Bellas Hartas is an LGBTIQ+ cultural space.
In Roma Sur, the Foro Roma building at Coahuila 92 holds Dragaret, a seated drag show with live vocals, and Guilt, a Friday and Saturday club. Revuelta Queer House in Roma Norte is a gallery and wine bar with a rooftop, open Wednesday to Sunday.
Saunas, cruising clubs and cinemas
Sodome in Anzures is the modern gay bathhouse with a bar, dark maze and foam nights (about 250-350 pesos). Club Olimpo opened in 2024 on Amberes, three floors with steam, sauna and jacuzzi. The rest are traditional baños with a gay clientele: Finisterre in San Rafael (since 1954, busiest weekend mornings), Señorial on Isabel la Católica, San Ciprián in La Merced (men only, about 85 pesos) and Puerto Vallarta in Iztapalapa. Most traditional baños open from 6am to about 9pm.
Men-only cruising clubs are legal and open in Mexico City: Sexto Piso and Funny Love on Eje Central, Dallas on Génova and Funny Love's Zona Rosa branch, La Casita on Insurgentes Sur and Club Antifaz in Chabacano. The old porn cinemas Savoy, Río and Venus in the Centro still draw a male crowd. Public sex is illegal, and Chilango has reported theft and extortion around outdoor spots, so stick to the indoor venues.
Somos Voces on Niza is the LGBT bookshop and café, with readings and talks. For underwear, BY UNDERWEAR on Amberes and Mosko in Plaza del Ángel; for flags, Rainbowland on Estrasburgo.
The Marcha del Orgullo LGBTTTI+ is held on the last Saturday of June. The 48th march took place on 27 June 2026 from the Ángel de la Independencia along Reforma, Avenida Juárez, Eje Central and 5 de Mayo to the Zócalo; the city counted about 550,000 people, down from 800,000 in 2025, with the Zócalo shared with the World Cup Fan Fest. The first march was in June 1979, after a contingent joined another march in July 1978. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing. The same June weeks bring the MIX festival of queer cinema (30th edition, 18-28 June 2026), the lesbian Marcha Lencha (20 June 2026) and Bearmex's Bear Pride. The trans visibility march is on 31 March. See the Mexico City Pride page.
Practical tips
Getting in: most flights use MEX (Benito Juárez). Some airlines use AIFA (NLU), about 40 km north; the Tren Felipe Ángeles from Buenavista has served it since April 2026 (110 pesos).
Taxis: use an app or a sitio (rank) taxi, never one hailed on the street at night. The US State Department warns about express kidnappings from street cabs.
Apps: N+ reported in 2024 about 100 men drugged and robbed after Grindr dates across Mexico City, the State of Mexico and Jalisco. Meet first in a bar, keep your drink in sight, and don't bring strangers to a hotel with your passport and cards out.
Bills: on Amberes, ask prices before ordering, pay per round and check the tip line.
Metro: the first three cars are reserved for women and children under 12.
Altitude: the city sits at about 2,240 m. Drink water and go easy on mezcal the first night.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
Gaymexicomap lists as permanently closed: El Viena, La Botica on Amberes, BoyBar, La Gayta, Envy, Paradise, Híbrido, Crown, Push, Hole and Milk; Baños Mina, San Juan and Ecuador; the Antifaz branches on Eje Central and Amberes; the El Infierno sex club in Iztapalapa; and Cabinas Hamburgo. King Bar on Amberes 18 is now Papi Fun Bar, La Noria is The Babilon Club, and Enigma is Amazonas. Fünk Club on Insurgentes Sur is now mainly a straight club. There has never been a Spartacus sauna in Mexico City; that one is in Puerto Vallarta.
