Gay London: The Honest 2026 Guide

The honest summary: London has one of the biggest and oldest LGBTQ+ scenes in the world, but it isn't one neighbourhood. Soho is the village for an early drink, Vauxhall is where the late clubs are, Dalston and Hackney have the queer east London nights, and south and south-east London have pubs with drag. The city keeps losing venues (Zodiac in Camden closed in October 2026) and gaining new ones (Coven: HQ, the reopened Black Cap and the community-owned Joiner's Heart all opened in 2026). Plan by night of the week, not by postcode.

Legal in one line: Sex between men was decriminalised in England and Wales in 1967, civil partnerships began in December 2005, same-sex marriage has been legal in England and Wales since 29 March 2014, and the Equality Act 2010 protects LGBTQ+ people from discrimination.

Soho: the village
Soho, between Oxford Street, Regent Street, Charing Cross Road and Shaftesbury Avenue, has been the centre of gay London since at least the 1950s. Old Compton Street is the spine. Comptons of Soho and the Admiral Duncan face each other there; the Admiral Duncan survived a nail-bomb attack on 30 April 1999 that killed three people and injured around 80. Coven: HQ opened in June 2026 at number 30, the former G-A-Y Bar.

Round the corner on Wardour Street are The Village, Friendly Society, Freedom and the Duke of Wellington, a bear pub. The Kings Arms on Poland Street is the other bear pub. The Yard and Rupert Street sit on Rupert Street, Ku Bar is on Lisle Street and Little Ku is on Frith Street. She Soho, on Old Compton Street, is a bar for queer women and non-binary people. By Charing Cross are Halfway to Heaven, Retro Bar and Heaven, the superclub under the station arches, which hosts the G-A-Y nights. Soho is busiest from 18:00 on Thursday to Saturday and gets quieter after midnight. Heaven, Ku Klub and Freedom are the main late options.

Vauxhall: the late clubs
Vauxhall, south of the river, is on the Victoria line and National Rail (not the Northern line). It's club territory: venues run specific nights rather than opening every day. The Royal Vauxhall Tavern, a Grade II-listed pub, is the home of cabaret nights such as Duckie and Bar Wotever. The Eagle hosts Horse Meat Disco on Sundays. Fire, with Lightbox next door, runs the big weekend parties and fetish nights such as Recon, and Union hosts SBN/NBN and Bootylicious. Nothing gets going much before midnight. The Cock Tavern in nearby Kennington is a small gay pub that opens Thursday to Sunday.

East London: Dalston, Hackney and Bethnal Green
East London has the queer, arty and lesbian-leaning scene. In Dalston, Dalston Superstore, VFD and The Divine (opened in 2024 by the team behind The Glory) run club nights, drag and cabaret, and The Roses of Elagabalus is a queer cocktail and cabaret bar on Kingsland Road. In Hackney, The Joiner's Heart opened in a railway arch by Hackney Central in August 2026 as the community-owned successor to the Joiners Arms, and La Camionera on Well Street is a lesbian and FLINTA bar. Around Bethnal Green are The Queen Adelaide, The Nelson's, the Star of Bethnal Green and Bethnal Green Working Men's Club, which runs queer parties most weekends. Further east, BJ's White Swan (since 1985) and The Old Ship in Limehouse are traditional gay pubs with drag at weekends, and She.world in Stratford is a trans club. Many venues here open Thursday to Sunday only.

King's Cross and Camden
Central Station on Wharfdale Road has been a gay pub since 1991, with rooms upstairs and a cruise club, The Underground, in the basement. In Camden, the Black Cap, one of London's best-known drag pubs, reopened on 21 March 2026 after eleven years closed. King's Cross also has Queer Britain, the national LGBTQ+ museum.

South and south-east London
In Clapham, the Two Brewers has run cabaret since 1981 and ARCH is a cocktail bar in a railway arch. At Elephant & Castle, Betty & Joan's combines a gay bar with the Queer Comedy Club, and The Rising in Borough calls itself SE1's only queer pub. The Old Nun's Head in Nunhead is a queer-run pub with the Pop-Up Dyke Bar. In Greenwich, The George & Dragon and Ye Olde Rose & Crown both put on cabaret, and The Lord Clyde is in Deptford. Earl's Court, once a gay village, now has only Ted's Place.

Saunas

Saunas and cruise bars
London has seven gay men's saunas, more than most European capitals. Pleasuredrome (Waterloo) and Sweatbox (Soho) are open 24 hours. Covent Garden Health Spa, Sailors (Limehouse), The Locker Room (Kennington), Saunabar Portsea (Marble Arch) and E15 Club (Stratford) keep day or evening hours. Entry runs from about £17 to £28, and most have under-25 or under-30 discounts. The men-only cruise bars are Vault 139 in Fitzrovia and The Underground at King's Cross, and MA1: The Bunker on City Road hosts promoter nights. See the saunas and cruising guides for details.

Cruising

Cruising and the law
Some London parks, Hampstead Heath above all, have a long cruising history, and our cruising guide lists them. Cruising itself is legal, but sex where the public could see it can be charged as outraging public decency or exposure, and sex in a public toilet is a specific offence. There is no official tolerance policy anywhere in London. Robbery is the main risk, so carry little and tell a friend where you are.

Culture and history
Queer Britain, at 2 Granary Square in King's Cross, is the UK's national LGBTQ+ museum. It reopened on 4 February 2026 after a refit, is free, and opens Wednesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 18:00. Gay's the Word in Bloomsbury has been selling LGBTQ+ books since 1979; the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners group, the story behind the film Pride, met there. Maggi Hambling's Oscar Wilde sculpture sits on Adelaide Street near Charing Cross, an English Heritage blue plaque marks Alan Turing's birthplace in Maida Vale, and a plaque on Highbury Fields marks Britain's first gay rights demonstration, a Gay Liberation Front torchlight rally on 27 November 1970. The Bishopsgate Institute holds major LGBTQIA+ archives. For film, BFI Southbank hosts BFI Flare every March, and The Arzner in Bermondsey, which opened in 2025, is the UK's first dedicated LGBTQ+ cinema. London's planned AIDS memorial, by Anya Gallaccio, isn't built yet; it is now expected on Store Street, Fitzrovia, in 2027.

Community and health
The London LGBTQ+ Community Centre at 60-62 Hopton Street, near Tate Modern, is a sober-friendly space open Wednesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 20:00. 56 Dean Street in Soho is the NHS sexual-health clinic most gay visitors use, and PrEP is free on the NHS. Switchboard runs a national LGBTQ+ helpline on 0800 0119 100. Galop supports people who have experienced homophobic, biphobic or transphobic abuse. London Friend, the UK's oldest LGBTQ+ charity, runs the Antidote drug and alcohol service.

Pride & Events

Pride and events
Pride in London is the big one. In 2026 it was on Saturday 4 July, with the parade from Hyde Park Corner along Piccadilly and Haymarket to Whitehall, and stages in Trafalgar Square, Soho and Leicester Square. The organisers have confirmed the next parade for Saturday 3 July 2027. London Trans+ Pride, a protest march with no sponsors, took place on Saturday 25 July 2026, and organisers estimated 150,000 people; the 2027 date hadn't been announced when we checked. UK Black Pride didn't hold its festival in 2026 after a "strategic reset" and has said it will return in 2027, date not yet announced. BFI Flare, the LGBTQIA+ film festival, ran from 18 to 29 March 2026 and returns in March 2027. Mighty Hoopla, the pop festival in Brockwell Park with a big queer following, was on 30-31 May 2026; 2027 dates weren't confirmed when we checked. Fringe! Queer Film & Arts Fest runs in east London each September; its 2026 edition was 12-20 September. For weekly listings, QX magazine is the most complete source.

Where to Stay

Where to stay
For walking home from the bars, stay in or near Soho, Covent Garden or Charing Cross; it's expensive but central. Waterloo and the South Bank put you near Pleasuredrome and a short ride from Vauxhall. King's Cross has good transport and Central Station has its own rooms. Shoreditch and Hackney suit you if you're here for the east London nights. Our hotel list covers all of these areas.

Getting Around

Getting around
Heathrow Express reaches Paddington in about 15 minutes; the Elizabeth line takes about 30-35 minutes from Heathrow to central London. Gatwick Express runs to Victoria in about 30 minutes. Pay on the Tube and buses with a contactless card or phone. The Night Tube runs on Friday and Saturday nights only, on the Victoria, Jubilee, Central, Northern and Piccadilly lines; on other nights, night buses and minicabs take over. Brighton, England's other big gay destination, is about an hour by train from Victoria.

Safety

Safety
London is generally safe for LGBTQ+ visitors, and same-sex couples holding hands in central London draw little attention. Homophobic attacks do still happen, especially late at night and away from the centre, so use the usual big-city sense and report incidents to the police or to Galop. For trans visitors, be aware that a Supreme Court ruling in April 2025 held that "sex" in the Equality Act means biological sex. That has led to new guidance on single-sex spaces, and the debate is ongoing. Trans people remain protected under the Act's "gender reassignment" provisions.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
G-A-Y Bar on Old Compton Street closed in October 2025 (Coven: HQ is now in the building). G-A-Y Late closed in December 2023, though G-A-Y nights continue at Heaven. Zodiac Bar on Hampstead Road closed on 9 October 2026. Circa Soho announced its closure in July 2026. The Glory closed in January 2024 and its owners opened The Divine. In Clapham, The Bridge closed in August 2025 and Kazbar in 2016. West Five in Ealing became a mainstream pub in 2024. XXL (2019), The Backstreet (2022), Barcode Vauxhall, Madame Jojo's and the original Joiners Arms (2015) are all gone. The King William IV in Hampstead and the Prince of Greenwich stopped being gay pubs around 2015.

A few words
London's queer slang is British slang: a pub is the default bar; a "boozer" is a pub; "bears" and "cubs" mean what they do anywhere; and "cottaging" is the old word for cruising in public toilets. "Cabaret" in a London gay pub usually means a drag host with a microphone.

At a glance
Main gay area: Soho (Old Compton Street)
Late clubs: Vauxhall (Fire, Union, Eagle, RVT) and Heaven at Charing Cross
Queer east London: Dalston, Hackney, Bethnal Green
Gay saunas: 7, two of them open 24 hours
Pride in London: Saturday 3 July 2027 (confirmed)
Museum: Queer Britain, King's Cross (free)

Yes. Same-sex marriage has been legal in England since 2014, the Equality Act 2010 bans discrimination, and same-sex couples draw little attention in central London. Pride in London fills the West End every July. Homophobic attacks still happen, mostly late at night, so use normal big-city sense and report incidents to the police or Galop.

Soho, around Old Compton Street, is the main gay area, with Comptons, the Admiral Duncan, Ku Bar, The Yard, She Soho and Coven: HQ. Vauxhall is the late-night club district (Fire, Union, the Eagle, the Royal Vauxhall Tavern). Dalston, Hackney and Bethnal Green have the queer and lesbian-leaning east London scene.

For a Soho evening: Comptons, the Admiral Duncan, The Yard, Ku Bar, the Duke of Wellington and The Village. For clubbing: Heaven (G-A-Y nights), Fire and Union in Vauxhall, and the Eagle's Horse Meat Disco on Sundays. For cabaret: the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, the Two Brewers in Clapham, and the Black Cap in Camden, which reopened in March 2026.

Early July for Pride in London, confirmed for Saturday 3 July 2027. London Trans+ Pride is usually on a Saturday in late July, BFI Flare film festival runs in the second half of March, and UK Black Pride has said it will return in 2027 after pausing in 2026. The bars and clubs run all year.

London's mainstream hotels are generally welcoming to same-sex couples. For walking home from the bars, stay around Soho, Covent Garden or Charing Cross. Central Station near King's Cross is a gay pub with its own rooms. See the hotel list on this page for current prices.

Seven, all for men: Pleasuredrome (Waterloo) and Sweatbox (Soho), both open 24 hours, plus Covent Garden Health Spa, Sailors in Limehouse, The Locker Room in Kennington, Saunabar Portsea near Marble Arch and E15 Club in Stratford. Entry runs from about £17 to £28.
