In July, the Riviera Romagnola is one long ribbon of numbered bagni: rows of umbrellas in the colours of each beach concession, the thud of volleyballs, the smell of sun cream and warm piadina drifting off the kiosks on the seafront. Head south past the last of them, towards Miramare, and the beach turns wild and free, with the long, shuttered pavilions of the 1930s Colonia Bolognese standing behind it. In November the same coast is a different place: the bagni stacked and shuttered, sea fog over the sand, the trolleybus half empty by nine. Rimini's gay life follows that rhythm. There's no gay sauna or cruise bar in the city today, one long-running Saturday club in the hills, a beach with a reputation, and the nearest dark bar a train ride away in Pesaro. Here's how it works, and where the law draws the line.
Legal in one line: Italy has had same-sex civil unions since 2016, though not full marriage, and private gay clubs with darkrooms are legal when run as members' associations. Sex in public is another matter: atti osceni (obscene acts) in a public place carry an administrative fine of €5,000 to €30,000, and they remain a crime, punishable by four months to four and a half years in prison, if they happen in or near places where minors are usually present. On a public beach in summer, that second rule is the one to keep in mind.
The card you'll need: Italian gay clubs are run as private associations (circoli privati), so you join before you go in. Both Classic Club in Rimini and Centoxx in Pesaro list ARCO membership as required. ARCO's standard AllClubs card is valid for a year at all its member clubs in Italy. If you are not an Italian citizen, ask for the ARCO Travel card: it carries a reduced fee and is valid for 90 days from issue. Fees are set by each club and not every club issues every card type, so ask at the door and bring photo ID.
Outdoors: the free beach at Miramare
Colonia Bolognese beach · Viale Principe di Piemonte, Miramare
The Colonia Bolognese is one of the grand seaside holiday colonies built for city children in the 1930s: four large pavilions linked by a 169-metre corridor, designed by the engineer Ildebrando Tabarroni to hold up to 1,200 children. It opened in 1932 and closed in 1977, and for decades it stood empty. In 2022 it was sold at auction for €5.2 million to a hotelier who plans a five-star hotel there, and the architects' page lists the restoration project as ongoing. For now it can only be seen from the outside.
The free beach (spiaggia libera) in front of it, at the southern end of Rimini's seafront towards Riccione, is unmanaged: no bagno, no sunbeds, no lifeguards and no facilities. It has long been used by naturists and has a reputation as a place where men meet, mostly on warm summer afternoons. It is a summer phenomenon. From October to April the beach is mostly empty and windswept, and it is dark by late afternoon in winter.
Getting there: the Metromare trolleybus runs along the coast between Rimini station and Riccione, with stops at Miramare station and Miramare Airport; from there, walk down to the seafront. In summer the last weekday departures run until about 2:00; in winter, the last trolleybus leaves Rimini station at about midnight. You can also walk or cycle south along the seafront from Rimini or north from Riccione.
Before you go:
- The law applies here. This is a public beach used by families in summer. Sex in public brings a fine of €5,000 to €30,000, and a criminal charge if minors could be around. We found no municipal designation of this stretch as an official naturist beach, so nudity is at your own risk; cover up if asked.
- Keep away from the building and its fence. The colony is private property and a fenced construction site, under restoration and structurally unsafe: don't enter it, climb the fence or hang around beside it. Local press described it in 2022 as a hangout for dealers and drifters during its decades of abandonment.
- Daylight is safer. The far end of the beach is isolated after dark, which makes it an easy place to be robbed or harassed. Go in daylight, with a friend if you can, and tell someone where you are.
- Carry little. Bring only what you need: a phone, a card and a little cash. Don't leave a bag unattended on the sand while you walk.
- Respect the dunes. Keep to the paths and take your rubbish with you.
- Summer vs winter: the outdoor scene, the beach bars and most of the visitors arrive with the summer season and leave in September. In winter, Rimini is a quiet provincial city, public transport thins out, and Classic Club's Saturday nights and the apps are where you'll find people.
- Getting around at night: the Metromare trolleybus runs about every 10 minutes by day in the summer high season and every 15 minutes on the winter timetable. Its last departures are at about 2:00 on summer weekdays, but in winter the last one leaves Rimini station at midnight. After that, book a taxi rather than walking along the empty seafront or the dark roads inland.
- Bring ID and cash. You'll need photo ID to buy an ARCO card, and some cash for entry and drinks at club doors.
- Apps: Grindr and Romeo are both used on the Riviera; the grid is much busier in summer, when the coast fills with visitors.
- Safety: be wary of meeting strangers from apps in isolated places. Meet in public first, and tell a friend where you're going.
- Health: if a condom breaks, PEP needs to start within 72 hours; go to a hospital emergency department (pronto soccorso). Arcigay Rimini Alan Turing can point you to local HIV and STI testing.
- Emergencies: call 112. Never mix GHB/GBL with alcohol.
- tessera – membership card. circolo privato – private club.
- spiaggia libera – free (public) beach. bagno – beach concession.
- lungomare – seafront promenade. naturisti – naturists.
- ingresso – entry. armadietto – locker.
- preservativo – condom.
- Una piadina con squacquerone e rucola, per favore – a piadina with squacquerone and rocket, please.
- No, grazie – no, thanks; always enough.

Indoors: the nearest cruise club is in Pesaro
Centoxx · Via Tommaso Campanella 12, Pesaro
Rimini has no cruise bar of its own, so the nearest dedicated venue is in Pesaro, around 40 km down the coast in the Marche region. ARCO's directory lists Centoxx as "the new cruising club in Pesaro", a dark cruising video bar, with ARCO membership required. Opening days and times differ between the sources we found, so check the club's ARCO page (arco.lgbt) or call the club (+39 339 7868 165) before you make the trip.
Getting there: regional trains run along the coast between Rimini and Pesaro, but not through the night. If you're heading for a late session, plan to drive, book a taxi back, or stay over in Pesaro.
Saunas: none in Rimini
We found no gay sauna operating in Rimini today. Oro Bianco Spa, on Viale Regina Elena in Marina Centro, is the wellness spa of the Hotel Regina Elena 57, a mainstream hotel spa; we found nothing to suggest it runs as a gay sauna. If you want a sauna, the nearest on the ARCO circuit are Steam Sauna in Bologna (Via Ferrarese 22/I) and Men's Sauna in Falconara Marittima (Via Flaminia 698D), near Ancona, which ARCO describes as the first gay sauna in the Marche region. Check their current hours before you go.
Before and after: the club and the beach
Classic Club (Via Feleto 11, in the hills inland from Rimini) is the city's gay disco, which ARCO says has been running since 1985. ARCO's listing shows it open on Saturdays from 23:45 to 06:00, with an ARCO card required; for the autumn 2026 season it lists Saturday 24 October as closed and Saturday 31 October open until 05:00. It is about ten minutes by car from the A14 Rimini Sud exit and not walkable from the seafront, so arrange a taxi both ways. Check classic-club.net for the season's calendar.
By day in summer, the international directory misterb&b lists La Community 27 in Marina Centro as Rimini's gay beach: a place to sunbathe and socialise, not to cruise. Our Rimini guide has the bars and beaches.
Gone or changed: the Colonia Bolognese itself closed to holidaymakers in 1977 and is now a fenced restoration site, not a place to enter. There is no gay sauna in Rimini at the time of writing; Oro Bianco Spa is a hotel spa.
Local colour
On the Riviera, the day's fuel is the piadina, the Romagna flatbread cooked on a hot terracotta or iron griddle and folded around a filling. The classic is squacquerone, the soft, tangy local cheese, with rocket and prosciutto, eaten standing at a chiosco on the way to the beach. If you want it closed and filled, ask for a cassone (also called a crescione), with tomato and mozzarella or wild greens. Wash it down with a glass of red Sangiovese. Rimini is also Fellini's city: he was born here, and the Parco Fellini on the seafront, where Pride ends, carries his name.
Practical tips
Pride
The Rimini Summer Pride marked its tenth edition on Saturday 25 July 2026 under the slogan "Stesso orgoglio, stesso mare" (same pride, same sea). The parade gathered in Piazzale Kennedy at 17:00, set off at 18:00 past the Parco del Mare and along Lungomare Tintori, and ended at Parco Fellini, where a festival with speeches and performances ran into the night. Thousands joined, including Rimini's mayor; Arcigay Rimini's president Marco Tonti gave the day's message. The 2027 date hadn't been announced at the time of writing. Further afield, Turin has been chosen to host EuroPride in June 2027.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I go cruising in Rimini?
Not indoors: Rimini has no cruise bar or gay sauna at the time of writing, and the closest cruise club is Centoxx in Pesaro, about 40 km away. The free beach at Miramare is known as a summer meeting place, but public sex is illegal in Italy.
Is there a gay sauna in Rimini?
Not that we could find; Oro Bianco Spa is a hotel wellness spa, not a gay sauna. For the real thing, go to Bologna (Steam Sauna) or Falconara Marittima near Ancona (Men's Sauna), both ARCO clubs.
Is outdoor cruising legal in Italy?
No. Sex in a public place (atti osceni) brings a fine of 5,000 to 30,000 euros, and it becomes a crime with a possible prison sentence where minors are usually present, which includes a summer beach. Keep anything sexual for private clubs or your room.
Do I need a membership card for gay clubs near Rimini?
Yes. Both clubs are private associations that ask for an ARCO card. If you are not an Italian citizen, ask for the 90-day ARCO Travel card and bring photo ID.
When is Rimini Summer Pride?
In high summer. The tenth Rimini Summer Pride was held on Saturday 25 July 2026, marching from Piazzale Kennedy along the seafront to Parco Fellini. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing.
