Gay Bars in Monterrey: The Honest 2026 Guide

Last verified: October 2026 · Compiled from venue checks and local and international sources from 2025–2026 · Report a change

By 10 at night, the heat finally breaks in Monterrey. The city comes alive as people pour out of bars in Barrio Antiguo, the old quarter beside the Macroplaza, with an ice-cold beer in hand. You'll find Cervecería Cuauhtémoc, brewing here since 1890, and on Fridays, a queen in full drag lip-syncing to a ranchera ballad at a small door in Centro. Monterrey's gay nightlife is small, local, and mostly indoors, but it's warm, loud, and cheap, with bars open till the early hours.

Legal in one line: same-sex marriage is legal in Mexico, including Nuevo León since a 2019 Supreme Court ruling. Discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation is prohibited, and Monterrey scores 82/100 on the GayOut index. The legal drinking age is 18, and clubs ask for official photo ID at the door.

How the night works

Most bars are in Centro and Barrio Antiguo, a few blocks apart around the Macroplaza. The exception is JACK, out west in San Jerónimo. The scene runs Thursday to Sunday, with Fridays and Saturdays being the big nights. Many venues are closed Monday to Wednesday, so check before heading out.

There are two rhythms: drag bars like Muxets and Akbal start early, around 9 pm, while dance clubs like La Colorina, Euphoria, and JACK fill up after 11 pm, with shows starting well after midnight.

Drag and cabaret

Muxets: the drag-show institution

Muxets, at Dr. José María Coss 315, Centro, is a small, much-loved bar with impersonator and drag shows. It's open Friday and Saturday from 9 pm to about 1:45 am. Arrive by 9 pm for a seat, and be prepared for a cash-only bar with cheap beer and limited snacks.

Akbal: karaoke, retro, and drag

Akbal, at José Mariano Abasolo 870 Ote, is a small cabaret-lounge with a camp feel. It's open Thursday to Sunday, with karaoke on Thursdays, retro music and drag shows on Fridays, and a gay night on Sundays. Be aware that shows can start late, and the cover charge might be higher than expected.

Dance clubs

La Colorina: the late-night show club

La Colorina is a two-floor club with LED screens, techno, and pop music, and stripper and drag shows that start around 1:30 am. It's open Wednesday to Sunday, from 9 pm to 5 am. Be cautious of the bill, as some reviewers report unexpected charges.

Euphoria Club: Barrio Antiguo's weekend party

Euphoria Club is on Padre Mier in Barrio Antiguo, with a Miami Vice look, DJs, go-go dancers, and drag shows. It's open Friday and Saturday from 9 pm, but be aware that the open bar might close early, and a 20% tip might be added to your bill.

JACK: the big one, out west

JACK, at Av. San Jerónimo 507, is a multi-level dance club with a young crowd, pop, and reggaeton music. It's open Friday and Saturday from 9 pm, with themed nights and an open-bar deal. Take a ride app to get there, as it's about 15 minutes from Centro.

NOA NOA Club

NOA NOA Club is a smaller weekend club in Centro, with drag, Latin DJs, and an unpretentious crowd. Be aware that smoking is allowed indoors, and prices might increase on special dates.

Also on the radar

These bars aren't officially listed, so check before you go.

    • Bunker, Emilio Carranza 930, Centro: a small karaoke bar popular with lesbian and bi women, with no cover, open on Saturday nights.
    • Japi, Calzada Mauricio Fernández Garza in Miravalle: a small, smarter club with live music or DJs on Wednesdays and weekends.

Closed or uncertain: Pride Night Club (Morelos 1099, Barrio Antiguo) is reported to be closed, and Las Horas, La Diosa Social Club, Bar Brut 33, and La Jaula Rest-Bar are marked as permanently closed.

    Money: the honest warning

The most common complaint about Monterrey's gay bars is the bill, not the welcome. Reviews mention added tips, pushed bottle sales, and surprise bills. Ask prices first, check your bill, and use a ride app door-to-door at night.

    • Ask the price of the cover, drinks, and any "private" show before you say yes.
    • Check the bill line by line. In Mexico, the tip is voluntary, and adding one without your consent is considered an abusive practice.
    • Carry cash in small notes. Pay as you go rather than running a tab.
    • Say no to anything you don't want: a drink, a dance, or a booth. You can always walk away.

    Practical tips

    • Getting around: use Uber, DiDi, or InDrive door-to-door at night. Install all three and compare prices.
    • Where to stay: Centro and Barrio Antiguo are within walking distance of most bars. San Pedro Garza García is calmer, but you'll need a taxi to get out.
    • Heat: drink water between rounds, especially during the hot summer months.
    • Dress: smart casual works everywhere. Carry your passport or a photo ID for the door.
    • Apps: Grindr is the main app. Meet app dates in a busy public place first, and be aware of robberies set up through dating apps.
    • Late-night food: finish the night with tacos de trompo from a late-night taquería.

Pride: the Marcha de la Diversidad

Monterrey's Pride march takes place on a Saturday in June. In 2026, it was on Saturday, June 20, with activities starting at 3 pm at General Anaya Metro station, a free concert by Ximena Sariñana, and the march through Centro to the Explanada de los Héroes.
