Frequently asked questions about LGBTQ+ travel in Madagaskar
Same-sex relations are legal in Madagaskar, but social attitudes vary and public displays of affection can attract negative attention. Major cities and international tourist areas are usually more welcoming than smaller towns and rural areas.
No — same-sex marriage is not currently recognised in Madagaskar. Same-sex relations between adults have been legal in Madagascar since 1972, but the Penal Code sets an unequal age of consent: sexual acts with a same-sex partner under 21 carry two to five years in prison, against 18 for opposite-sex partners. A 2007 law explicitly prohibits marriage between people of the same sex, there is no partnership recognition, adoption law limits full adoption to married heterosexual couples, and there is no anti-discrimination protection in the 2024 Labour Code or anywhere else. Legal gender change is not possible. Enforcement against adults is rare; social pressure does the work. A 2020 case involving two women drew public calls for conversion therapy, and authorities cancelled an LGBTQ party in Antananarivo in 2021 for 'incitement to debauchery'. The US State Department describes attitudes ranging from quiet acceptance to violent rejection. Antananarivo has a discreet community and the beach town of Nosy Be is relaxed with foreign visitors. Discretion in public is the rule.

Many hotels in tourist areas of Madagaskar welcome LGBTQ+ guests without explicit marketing. International chains in central districts are the safest choice; smaller boutique hotels vary. See each city page for verified LGBTQ+-friendly options.
