Bear events are the friendliest corner of gay travel. Nobody cares what you bench, the dress code is a tank top at most, and unlike circuit weekends the whole thing is built around hanging out — pool afternoons, bar takeovers, long dinners — with the dance floors as a bonus rather than the point. One caveat before anything else: dates drift a little each year, so confirm on the official event site before you buy flights.

Pace yourself: how a bear week works

Expect a marathon, not a sprint. A solid bear week runs five to nine days, and your biggest challenge will be pacing. The routine is beautifully predictable: wake up late, drift to a packed pool party or beach meetup, then gravitate toward the bear village or the main host bar for sunset drinks. At night the energy shifts to themed parties, drag shows, something leather-adjacent — and yes, someone will absolutely talk you into an underwear party you didn't plan for. The weekend pass covers the big nights, but much of the social program is free. The real cost is the bed: these towns are small, and rooms vanish six months out.

Summer: the two giants

Bear Week Provincetown — mid-July. The biggest bear gathering in North America takes over Provincetown for a full week each July, turning Commercial Street into one long slow-moving parade between the Boatslip tea dances and the Crown & Anchor complex. Fair warning if this gave you the itch: the 2026 edition wrapped on July 18, so you just missed it. Open the calendar, circle mid-July 2027, and start watching for rooms — the town sells out by winter. Our Provincetown guide covers where to stay and which pool matters.

Sitges Bears Week — early September. Europe's answer, and many would say the better party. Around 8,000 bears descend on Sitges September 4–13, 2026, with the seafront Bear Village opening mid-week. Playa de la Bassa Rodona, the town's gay beach, is packed all week. A blunt note for 2026: the event is now less than two months away, and if you don't have a room yet, you have a problem. The realistic fix is sleeping in Barcelona — the train to Sitges takes about 35 minutes; check the last departure back or plan on splitting a cab, which is what half the crowd ends up doing anyway.

Winter: escape season

BeefDip — Puerto Vallarta, late January. A week of beach parties and cruises in Mexico's gay capital. If Provincetown is a reunion, BeefDip is a holiday: warm water, cheap tacos, and the Zona Romántica within stumbling distance of everything.

International Bear Convergence (IBC) — Palm Springs, February. A long weekend of pool parties across resort hotels in Palm Springs. Smaller than the summer weeks, easier to navigate, and the desert weather in February is exactly what you want it to be.

Mad.Bear — Madrid, early December. Madrid closes out the bear calendar with a week of club nights around Chueca. It doubles as a proper city break — museums by day, bears by night.

Spring

Maspalomas Bear Carnival — Gran Canaria, March. Bear week meets Carnival in Maspalomas: costume parades, dune walks, and the only bear event where a feather boa counts as gear. Home base is the Yumbo Centre — an unremarkable shopping mall by day that turns into a glorious open-air maze of bear bars after midnight, and you will get lost in it at least once.

Texas Bear Round-Up — Dallas, March. One of America's longest-running bear runs, hosted in Dallas with the legendary Round-Up Saloon nearby for country-western nights.

Amsterdam Bear Weekend — March. A compact, well-organized weekend across the bars of Amsterdam, usually anchored around the Warmoesstraat area.

Autumn and the rest

Bears on Ice — Reykjavík, early September. The most unusual entry on the calendar: a small, sociable weekend built around geothermal lagoon trips and Icelandic nightlife. Book it for the setting, stay for the hot tubs.

Bear Pride Cologne — autumn. Germany's bear scene gathers in Cologne, a city with enough leather-and-bear bars to fill the weekend on its own. The local ritual: Kölsch served in tiny 0.2-litre glasses that keep arriving at a dizzying pace until you put a coaster on top of yours.

Lazy Bear Week — Guerneville, California, late July. A charity-driven week in the redwoods north of San Francisco. River floats by day, dance floors by night, and every dollar of profit goes to community causes.

Bear Week Key West — November. A warm-weather closer in Key West, where the Island House resort is the natural base camp.

Chicago Bear Pride — Memorial Day weekend. Chicago's Northalsted bars host a long weekend that overlaps with IML, so the city is at full capacity — book accordingly.

## Practical tips

Book the bed before the pass. Passes rarely sell out; rooms in Provincetown, Sitges and Guerneville absolutely do. Six months ahead is the safe window for the two giants, and the resorts that host official events go first.

You don't need to look a certain way. This is the least body-policed space in gay nightlife. Chasers, cubs, otters, admirers and the merely curious are all part of the crowd. Showing up is the only requirement.

Budget for the extras. The pass is the cheap part. The money disappears at dinners, day trips and that harness you swore you wouldn't buy at the bear market.

Stay an extra night. Most host cities have year-round bear bars and saunas that are better on the quiet night after the crowd leaves — locals come back out, and you actually get a conversation. The world gay map shows what's around wherever you land.

Going with friends? Bear weeks are the easiest events to split a villa for — a few pointers in the group trips guide.

And if the dates here don't line up with your vacation, the pride calendar and mega events pages show what else is on, month by month.
