What Sitges actually is
Sitges is a small coastal town 35 kilometres south of Barcelona, reachable in 35 to 40 minutes by the Rodalies commuter train from Passeig de Gracia. The town has about 30,000 permanent residents, a compact old town of narrow streets and white buildings, and a seafront with beaches on either side. It has been a known gay destination since at least the 1970s and is one of the longest-established gay resort towns in Europe.
The gay scene is concentrated in the old town, along a small cluster of streets around Carrer del Pecado (the Street of Sin) and the surrounding blocks. You can walk between all the main gay bars in about ten minutes. This is not a big city with a sprawling gay neighbourhood; it is a small town where the bars happen to be very gay-friendly and gay-owned. The beach scene operates on similar principles: there is an informal gay and naturist section near the rocky end of Playa de la Ribera, not a designated facility, just where people have gathered for decades.
Seasonal reality
Summer is when Sitges operates at full capacity. July and August are packed. Hotels charge peak rates, the bars are busy every night, and the beaches are crowded. It is genuinely fun during this period if you don't mind a crowd, but expect to pay for it and to book well in advance.
The town is not dead outside summer. The year-round local gay population is significant enough to keep several bars running through the quiet months. Spring and autumn are pleasant: the weather is good enough for the beach, prices drop considerably, and the town has a more relaxed pace. Winter is quiet but not empty. Sitges is close enough to Barcelona that day trips in either direction are easy, which helps sustain off-season visitors.
Carnival
Sitges Carnival, held in February or March depending on the year, is the biggest event in the town's calendar and has an international reputation for its drag performances, elaborate floats, and parties that run for nearly two weeks. The parade is the centrepiece: spectacular, crowded, and genuinely worth the trip if you time it right. Carnival books out six months or more in advance. Accommodation anywhere near Sitges fills up; people stay in Barcelona and commute. If you plan to come for Carnival, treat it like a major international event and book accordingly.
Getting there and staying
The train from Barcelona Passeig de Gracia to Sitges runs frequently throughout the day and takes 35 to 40 minutes on the Rodalies R2 Sud line. It is cheap and reliable. Driving is an option but parking in the town centre is difficult in summer.
Sitges has a good selection of gay-friendly guesthouses and small hotels, many of them gay-run or specifically targeting gay guests. The town's hospitality sector is attuned to the community in a way that larger cities rarely achieve. Some guesthouses are clothing-optional with pools; these book up fast in summer. For Carnival, there is no realistic accommodation left in Sitges itself at less than six months out.
