Estonia has legal protections for same-sex couples and is generally welcoming to LGBTQ+ travelers. Major cities and tourist destinations are the most established; see each city page for the current scene and venue reviews.
Yes — same-sex marriage is legal in Estonia. See the Legal Status panel on this page for the specifics. Estonia became the first Baltic state and the first former Soviet republic to legalise same-sex marriage, passed in June 2023 and in force from 1 January 2024, with joint adoption from the same date. Same-sex relations have been legal since 1992, a registered partnership law has operated since 2016, and employment protection on grounds of sexual orientation has existed since 2004, with public incitement to hatred criminalised in 2006. Legal gender change has not required surgery since 1997 or hormone therapy since 2022, though it still goes through a medical committee rather than self-declaration. Public support for same-sex marriage reached 53 percent in 2023 and 2026 polling, higher among ethnic Estonians and the young, lower among the Russian-speaking minority. Tallinn hosted Baltic Pride in 2026. The Lutheran church refuses to register same-sex marriages, and there was a violent attack on a Tallinn gay bar in June 2023, but these are exceptions. Tallinn has a small, friendly scene and Tartu a student community; the country is safe and low-drama for visitors.
The cities listed on this page have the most active LGBTQ+ scenes in Estonia, typically anchored by the capital and the largest tourist cities. Each city page links to verified LGBTQ+ venues and upcoming events.
Yes — gay-friendly and gay-popular hotels are listed on each city page in Estonia. International chains in central districts are reliably welcoming; independent boutique options are flagged where the community has verified them.
Pride events take place in Estonia — check the events calendar on this site and each city page for the current year's dates.
