West of the Acropolis, the old gasworks of Gazi still stand over the neighbourhood, their brick chimneys lit up at night above streets full of bars, souvlaki counters and late crowds spilling onto the pavement. A few blocks north, Metaxourgeio mixes crumbling neoclassical houses with galleries, graffiti and side streets that go quiet after midnight. That is where most of Athens' cruising happens: behind plain doors, in a couple of cruise clubs and a men's sauna, with a second sauna near Monastiraki and an old bathhouse by Omonia. In summer the action moves to the rocks of Limanakia on the coast. The scene is compact rather than huge, and most men also use the apps, but there is something on every night of the week.

Legal in one line: Greece decriminalised sex between men in 1951, introduced civil partnerships in 2015 and opened civil marriage to same-sex couples in February 2024 (Law 5089/2024), the first Orthodox-majority country to do so. Saunas and cruise clubs are legal private venues for adults; sex in public is not legal (see the box on the law and safety below).

How cruising works in Athens

The venues are clustered in a small area of the inner west: Gazi (around Kerameikos metro), Metaxourgeio next door, and the old commercial centre around Omonia and Monastiraki. You can walk between most of them in 15 to 20 minutes. The cruise clubs open from midday and run late; the saunas open in the afternoon, except Ira Baths, which is a daytime place. Gazi's gay bars are a few streets away for a drink first, and on Saturdays the metro now runs all night (see Practical tips).

Cruise clubs and darkrooms

Attraxx · Iakchou 36 (Ιάκχου 36), Gazi

GayCities calls Attraxx a "sex and porn palace", and Nomadic Boys, in its guide updated in July 2026, describes it as Gazi's main gay cruising club. Inside there's a cinema area, darkrooms, glory holes and private cabins. Nomadic Boys lists it as open daily 12:00–02:00, and until 04:00 at weekends. It was still on the distribution list of the Greek LGBTQ+ magazine Antivirus in June 2026. The door price isn't published, so bring cash and ask at the counter.

8Downtown · Karolou 8 (Καρόλου 8), Metaxourgeio

8Downtown is a men's cruising venue with cabins, a darkroom and a cinema, a few minutes' walk from Metaxourgeio and Omonia metro stations. Nomadic Boys gives daily 12:00–03:00, and until 04:30 at weekends, and says it is 21+ only, so carry ID. It describes a mixed crowd, including men who don't identify as gay. Antivirus also listed it in 2026.

Sex shops

Mega Sex Shop (Asteroidz), at Iera Odos 38 in Gazi, is one of the adult shops on the Antivirus 2026 list, useful for supplies. We couldn't confirm whether it has video cabins.

The saunas

All three men's saunas have darkrooms or play areas, so cruising is part of the visit. Full details are on our Athens saunas page.

Alexander Sauna · Megalou Alexandrou 134, Gazi

On the corner with Iera Odos, about five minutes' walk from the metro. The Gay Passport, updated in January 2026, lists a bar, a leather bar, a darkroom, a maze, a dry sauna, a steam room, a jacuzzi, massage, a garden and cabins, with free condoms and lube. Nomadic Boys adds an "X-Action" darkroom area and themed parties. Hours: 17:00–02:00 on weekdays and 17:00–06:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Price: The Gay Passport gives €17 general admission, with discounts for under-30s and repeat visits. Guests of the Alexander Apartments get free entry, according to Nomadic Boys.

Flex Sauna · Polykleitou 6, Monastiraki

On a side street a short walk from Monastiraki metro. Facilities include a sauna, a steam room, a jacuzzi, a solarium, a darkroom and cruise area, cabins, a TV room and a roof garden that opens in summer. Listings agree on 15:00 to midnight, closed on Tuesdays. Nomadic Boys says it's busiest between 16:00 and 21:00 and runs Bear Days on Sundays and Wednesdays.

Ira Baths (Ήρα) · Zinonos 4, Omonia

An older-style men's bathhouse inside an arcade off Zinonos street, near Omonia Square. Wanderlog describes a small sauna, showers in the old bath area, two playrooms and private cabins, with a crowd that is mostly over 30. It notes the hammam and jacuzzi are no longer in use. It's a daytime venue, 10:00–18:00; one guide says it's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, another lists it as daily, so phone first (+30 210 523 4964).

Closed: Lamda, the long-running gay club with a darkroom, closed permanently in April 2024, according to Nomadic Boys. Older guides may still list it.

Outdoors

Athens has a few outdoor spots with long cruising histories. We describe them so you know what they are; the indoor venues above are legal, licensed and safer.

Limanakia · Athens Riviera, between Vouliagmeni and Varkiza

A string of rocky coves below the coast road, long popular as a clothing-optional gay spot in summer. Nomadic Boys puts it at about 40 minutes by taxi from the centre, or about an hour by metro and bus. There are no facilities: no shops, no shade beyond the rocks and caves, so bring water, food, sunscreen and water shoes. Access is down rough paths over rocks, so wear proper shoes, don't climb the cliffs, and don't swim off the rocks after drinking. Greece has no official list of nudist beaches; nudity has no official status at spots like this, so cover up if families are nearby.

National Garden and Zappeion · behind Parliament

The gardens next to Syntagma and the Zappeion Hall are a central park used by families, joggers and tourists during the day. Nomadic Boys still mentions cruising there. We list it for that history, not as a recommendation. Respect the gardens' posted opening hours.

Pedion tou Areos · near Victoria metro

A large public park north of the centre with a long history in older gay guides. We found no dated source confirming cruising there now.

The law and your safety outdoors:

    • The law: being gay in a park or on a beach is legal; sex in public is not. Article 353 of the Greek Penal Code makes it an offence to knowingly offend someone else's sexual decency with a sexual act in their presence, and the penalty is far heavier if a minor is present.
    • Police: if police approach you, stay calm, be polite and show ID; carry your passport or a copy.
    • Robbery: quiet paths and dark corners are where thieves look for people who won't go to the police. Take only your phone, one card and a little cash.
    • On the coast: tell someone where you are, and watch your footing on the rocks.
    • Emergency: call 112.

An Athens night, the local way

Athenians eat late. Start with a freddo espresso in the afternoon, then meze and a carafe of tsipouro or ouzo at a mezedopoleio in Psyrri or Gazi around ten. A souvlaki wrapped in pitta is the standard snack between venues, and after a long night, a sesame koulouri from a street cart and a coffee see you home.

    Practical tips

    • Cash and ID: carry euros in small notes for entry and lockers, plus ID; 8Downtown is 21+.
    • Lockers and phones: use the locker, leave passports and spare cards at the hotel, and never take photos inside a cruise space.
    • Consent: "no" (óchi) is enough, in any room, at any time.
    • Getting home: since 13 September 2025, metro lines 2 and 3 and the T6 and T7 trams have run through the night on Saturdays, every 10–15 minutes on line 2, as reported by To Vima. Line 2 stops at Metaxourgeio and Omonia; line 3 at Kerameikos (Gazi) and Monastiraki and runs to the airport. Check the operator's site before you rely on it. On other nights, use a licensed taxi through an app such as FreeNow.
    • Apps: Grindr is the main app; meet first in a bar or café and share your location with a friend.
    • Testing: Athens Checkpoint, run by Positive Voice at Pittaki 4, Monastiraki, offers free, anonymous rapid tests for HIV and hepatitis B and C. Its site gives Tuesday to Saturday 12:00–20:00 (tel. 210 33 10 400).
    • PEP: if a condom breaks, PEP must start within 72 hours. In Greece it's free and prescribed by a specialist at a hospital with a Monada Eidikon Loimoxeon (Special Infections Unit). For the nearest one, call the national public health agency EODY on 210 7222222, or ask Athens Checkpoint.
    • Chems: if GHB/GBL is around, never mix it with alcohol and never dose for someone else. Call 112 in an emergency.

    Athens Pride

Athens Pride 2026 took place in June and ended with its parade from Syntagma Square on Saturday 13 June 2026. The bars, clubs and Alexander Sauna in Gazi hold parties during the Pride week, according to Nomadic Boys. Dates for 2027 had not been announced when we checked; see athenspride.eu nearer the time.

Frequently asked questions

Where is gay cruising in Athens?

Mostly indoors, in the inner western districts. Attraxx in Gazi and 8Downtown in Metaxourgeio are cruise clubs with darkrooms, cabins and video areas, and the three men's saunas, Alexander in Gazi, Flex in Monastiraki and Ira Baths near Omonia, all have darkrooms or play areas too. In summer there is also Limanakia, a rocky clothing-optional beach on the Athens Riviera.

Which gay saunas are open in Athens in 2026?

Three: Alexander Sauna at Megalou Alexandrou 134 in Gazi, which stays open until the early morning at weekends; Flex at Polykleitou 6 near Monastiraki, open from 15:00 to midnight and closed on Tuesdays; and Ira Baths, a small daytime bathhouse at Zinonos 4 near Omonia. All three were on Antivirus magazine's Athens distribution list in 2026.

Is outdoor cruising legal in Greece?

Being gay in a park or on a beach is legal; sex in public is not. A sexual act that offends someone else's decency is an offence under Article 353 of the Greek Penal Code. Robbery is the more common risk, so the cruise clubs and saunas are the safer choice.

When was Athens Pride 2026?

In June. Athens Pride 2026 ended with its parade from Syntagma Square on Saturday 13 June 2026. The 2027 dates had not been announced when we checked, but the event is traditionally held in June.

How do I get home after a night out in Athens?

On Saturday nights, metro lines 2 and 3 and the T6 and T7 tram lines have run through the night since September 2025, and lines 2 and 3 serve Metaxourgeio, Omonia, Kerameikos and Monastiraki. On other nights, book a licensed taxi through an app such as FreeNow.
