Prague has several gay saunas and they are among the better value in Europe. The city's general affordability extends to its bathhouses: entry fees are significantly lower than you would pay in London, Paris, or Amsterdam for facilities that are often comparable. If you are travelling with sauna visits as part of your plans, Prague is worth factoring in on that basis alone.
What to expect
Prague's gay saunas follow the standard bathhouse format. Entry gives you access to steam rooms, dry saunas, showers, and common areas. Private cabins are available at most venues for an additional charge. Entry fees are typically 200 to 400 Czech koruna (8 to 16 euros) for basic access, with private rooms costing proportionally more. These are low prices by Western European standards for venues with full facilities.
Most of the venues are open all week. Daytime and afternoon visits are quieter. Evenings and weekend afternoons see more traffic. Some saunas have specific themed nights; checking before you go is worthwhile.
Facilities and quality
Prague saunas are generally well-maintained. The city attracts a significant number of gay tourists and the venues reflect this with a level of investment in upkeep that you might not expect from the prices. Most have Wi-Fi in common areas, lockers, and condom dispensers. Some have cafes or bar areas where you can drink between sessions.
The clientele is mixed: local Czechs, Central and Eastern European visitors, and Western European tourists. The mix is broader than in city-specific scenes like Berlin or London, which can make the atmosphere more varied and less predictable in terms of what you find on a given visit.
The saunas
- Sauna Babylonia — The sauna is not good! Sometimes there are many people, the only unpleasant. The sauna is small, no jacuzzi, and when it's full of only old and ugly people it's just awful. It wasn't like that before. You can neither relax nor have fun. There are very few cabins and they are not regularly cleaned and it gets nasty very quickly...
- SAUNA DAVID — Oldest gay sauna in the city, fully renovated Sauna David is the oldest gay sauna in Prague. Apparently popular with the older crowd. There is a bar, sauna, steamroom, whirlpool and internet. There also appears to be a massage chair.
- SAUNA LABYRINT — "Biggest sauna in the country - be careful or you will get lost :-) Prague's newest and largest gay sauna includes a bar with large variety of drinks and beverages, video room, dark room, glory holes, a sex shop, Finnish sauna, Bio sauna, relaxation cubicles, a jacuzzi with high performance massage jets, a large Turkish steam room labyrinth with aroma therapy and a steam room with aroma therapy and sea salt saturated steam. Entrance fee is 300 crowns (approx. 12 euros)"
Practical notes
Bring ID. Towels are included. Entry is straightforward and the staff at Prague venues are used to international visitors. Most accept cards but some prefer cash; it is worth having Czech koruna on you. For the broader picture, see the Gay Prague Guide.
