Spas & Wellness in Aguas Calientes

After the pre-dawn starts and the steep climbs around Machu Picchu, a massage is one of the most popular ways to spend an afternoon or evening in Aguas Calientes. The town has a cluster of small, well-reviewed massage and wellness spas, most of them along Avenida Pachacutec and the surrounding streets. These are mainstream wellness businesses — they are not gay venues and Aguas Calientes has no dedicated LGBTQ+ spa or bathhouse — but they are relaxed, professional and comfortable for all travelers, including same-sex couples.

What's on Offer

Expect straightforward therapeutic and relaxation massages — deep tissue, hot stone, aromatherapy and the ubiquitous post-trek leg treatment — at prices well below what you would pay in Europe or North America. Several spas keep long hours to catch travelers coming down from the ruins, and many hotels can arrange in-room treatments. Standards vary, so it is worth reading recent reviews and confirming the price and duration before you start.

The Thermal Baths

The town takes its name from the Baños Termales de Aguas Calientes, the municipal hot springs uphill from the center. They are a simple, inexpensive public spa where locals and tourists soak together after a day on the mountain. They are not an LGBTQ+ space and can get busy, but they are a pleasant, low-cost way to unwind — bring a towel and swimwear.

Good to Know

None of these spas are LGBTQ+ specific, so there is no "scene" to seek out — just competent, welcoming wellness. For a fuller gay-friendly spa and sauna experience, the larger cities of Cusco and Lima are the places to look.
