Wonder Bar sits on Ocean Avenue, directly across from the Asbury Park boardwalk. It bills itself as a mainstream bar and live-music venue, not a gay bar. The crowd is mixed. In a town with a large LGBTQ+ population, that mostly means nobody cares who you came with. The outdoor deck is famous for dog-friendly afternoons, and the building’s grinning Tillie face is the local landmark. Hours start at 3pm on weekdays. Friday through Sunday, doors open at noon. It closes at 2am and is listed as closed on Tuesdays. Summer weekends are the busiest by far. Check the night’s line-up before you go, because a cover charge can apply on band nights.
