It's a place to sleep. Clean enough to sleep well enough, but not to walk around barefoot.
The room 521 was worn down, cleaned, but not maintained. Leaking faucets, peeling ceiling paint and wall paper. Shower tiles and curtain rod broken. Drywall repairs that looked horrible, finish worn to the wood on bathroom cabinets, remote was sticky from chemicals destroying the surface material. .25-.50 gap around the door so noise and light from the hallway was constant. Overpriced for the accommodation. The only benefit was the room was clean and the location proximity to the event. I would have been embarrassed and furious if my family had been with me on this trip.
I was nervous to stay here from the reviews, but much like everyone else the price was good for the location. The room smelled like cleaning products and was visually clean except for an acrylic fingernail in the bathroom so no harm there. They should invest a few extra $ on better shower curtains that stay shut but its an annoyance more than anything. I only mention it since it is such an easy upgrade for a better experience. Staff was welcoming at the front desk. If you value some extra $ to spend in the city, its a good value. Close to everything downtown and at Grant park, less than 2 blocks to the red line and busses run up and down Michigan. Yes it is noisy around this hotel, often hearing street noise but its a downtown hotel, its gonna happen.
My stay at Best Western Grant Park Chicago Downtown was one of the worst hotel experiences I've had across years of travel throughout the US. What made it truly unacceptable wasn't the stay itself — it was what happened afterward. Weeks after checkout, I discovered my security deposit had been withheld without any notice during or after my stay. When I called the hotel to inquire, I was told the reason was dirty towels — a claim I was never informed of at checkout, never sent in writing, and never shown photographic evidence of, despite requesting it. No documentation was ever provided. This is not how reputable hotels handle deposit disputes. Standard practice requires notification, documentation, and transparency. None of that happened here. I am not alone in this experience. Multiple online reviews of this specific location describe the same pattern: deposits withheld after checkout with no prior notice and no supporting evidence provided when challenged. A recurring name in those complaints is the property Front Desk manager, Oscar Villasnr. When a hotel withholds deposits without notice, without evidence, and without giving guests any opportunity to respond, it stops being a deposit policy and starts being a deliberate revenue strategy. I would strongly caution travelers to document everything meticulously before and after staying here, and try to pay cash deposit and collect immediately after checkout or if credit card based then pay close attention to how your deposit is handled. I will not be returning to this property and will be escalating this matter through the appropriate consumer channels.
Girl with glasses and black hair with purple highlight at the end needs to do a more decent job.
