The Lily Inn
Visitors praise the gorgeous rooms and building, with some enjoying the whirlpool baths. However, many recent reviews indicate the inn is past its prime, with complaints about cleanliness, maintenance issues like poor drainage and cold rooms, and a lack of attentive service and a proper check-in process.

I never stayed at a Bed and Breakfast before so I was intrigued by the opportunity, however it wasn’t what I expected. I was envisioning the inn on the Bob Newhart show, with the owner greeting you, directing you to your accommodations, serving as a concierge, and making sure you are well cared for. Without a front desk at which to check-in, I wasn’t sure how that would all be accomplished. Indeed we discovered this was a lovely old house with a lot of character but the rest was largely missing. We panicked for a moment when we arrived to a keypad door lock but no mention of a code in our welcome text and email. Thankfully that was quickly resolved with a phone call to the number on the sign on the door. Free parking was street parking or parking in the public lot a block away. Breakfast was provided but was nothing extravagant. Bagels, banana bread, yogurt parfait and fruit (strawberries and blueberries) were placed on the large dining table for all guests to help themselves family style. Then the cook brought out a plate for each of us with scrambled eggs plus one piece of bacon cut in half. The room we stayed in was charming enough with two single beds, nightstand, a little couch, a large dresser, an arm chair and a more modern bathroom with a sink, toilet, and shower. It did take forever to get hot water in the morning but that was not surprising. There was no television, clock, phone or radio in the room. The television was in the common room down the hallway, which we did not use during our short stay. The inn is right there on a main street of Burlington within walking distance of the river, shops, and restaurants. That was a plus. On the negative side however was the price. Our room was $236 per night but then there was another $100 PER NIGHT for “tax recovery and fees”. That’s ridiculous! I can understand taxes, but surely not 50% and we have no idea what the fees were for. Overall our stay was pleasant but just not what we prefer.
Google should make a system where only the most recent year or two of reviews are counted in the score. I didn’t notice when I booked, but I agree with most of the recent reviews that mark this place as much less appealing than you would think, including in the following areas: -past its prime: the place looks cool, but feels sad and there’s very little homeyness to it -unbelievable breakfast experience: I’m not sure why they advertise breakfast. The first morning, my friend and I split approximately one dry unseasoned scrambled egg, a few pieces of turkey bacon, and toasted some bread ourselves. The second morning they “hadn’t gotten the eggs delivered” (I’m not sure why they couldn’t have gone to the grocery store themselves) and so apparently breakfast was just toast (again if we wanted to make it ourselves)…I’m not picky, but there was like no food out, just a few oatmeal packets, one pastry, and a Keurig machine. I think they would be better off just not advertising breakfast (they also have a sign saying you’ll be charged $150 if you cook in the kitchen that they won’t cook in for you) -the cost is exorbitant for what you get: I would’ve felt a lot better paying about half the price for the quality and the hospitality. Nobody was a jerk. It’s just like they either were phoning it in or had no familiarity with the hospitality business. -I’m giving this two stars because it at least felt relatively safe and the bed was comfortable. But I wouldn’t go for three or four stars because the price is way too high for what you get
Really have a tough time with this one but it‘s a perfect example of the time in which we live. We had an unexpected house guest around Christmas and really didn’t have our guest room in order so we made a reservation at the LILY INN. Reservation was made on Christmas Eve for a one night stay on the 26th. Two hours before check in we received a call from Tyonna at the LILY INN telling us they were having trouble with their credit card machine and could not process the charge on American Express. We were instructed to send Tyonna $224.59 via venmo and assured there would be no charge on American Express….well guess what….the malfunctioning credit card machine processed the $224.59 charge AND our friend at the LILY INN received $224.59 via Venmo. We received a credit from American Express BUT as of today the folks at the LILY INN have not responded to contact attempts from American Express. BE CAREFUL…THIS AIN’T THE ESTABLISHMENT IT ONCE WAS (Unfortunately) & PROJECTS AN AIR OF DISJOINTED HUSTLE.
The room and building were gorgeous. We were in room 4 with a lovely bathroom with a whirlpool bath. The services were not great- we were told 8-9:30 there was a made to order breakfast, but we got there at 8:45 and were given mediocre scrambled eggs, a bit of sausage and a bowl of berries. Another guest arrived shortly before 9:30 and they did not receive any food. The only staff we interacted with were from a text before we arrived with information about getting in and questions about dietary needs for breakfast- which were not particularly met by the chef in the morning. A lovely garden in the back that was not very well maintained - but we were there in November. Really nice little town with a handful of shops and restaurants and a gorgeous view by the river.
My husband and I stayed in room 1, with 2 single beds. We were allowed to drop off our overnight bags early, because we had an event to attend that afternoon. We knew that we would not be back to the Lily Inn B&B until early evening. I was texted the code to get into the Inn, and we dropped off our overnight bags. Which we appreciated. No one was around when we arrived a little after 5:30 in the evening at the Inn. The Inn was dark, deserted and I felt as if I was in an air B-n-B, and not a Bed and Breakfast or an Inn! The house itself is lovely. But in need of some upgrades, refurbishing and a good cleaning! The couches and chairs in the sitting room and little lounge upstairs were very uncomfortable. Our room had one tinny end table for both beds, and no desk tops to set anything down upon! The furniture in our room was very uncomfortable and the beds were very squeaky during the night. The pillows on the bed were old and practically flat. My husband and I took a walk down High Street after our arrival. It seemed like a nice community that has passed its prime. The staff that I had interactions with were cooperative and helpful. Germany who made our eggs and bacon was very nice and accommodating. But, we had to get our own coffee and put our English muffins in the toaster, if we wanted them toasted! The entire experience was very odd and it is not an actual Bed and Breakfast or an Inn from my experience! We were pretty much on our own, and unfortunately we will not be back or recommend the Lily Inn B&B to anyone.
I wish I could have stayed a little longer in the morning for breakfast
