O tym miejscu Everard Baths (miejsce)

The Everard Baths opened in 1888 as a private Turkish bath in a converted church at 28 West 28th Street. By the 1920s it had become one of Manhattan's most established gay meeting places; the WPA guide to New York in 1939 discreetly listed it. Regulars over the decades included Rudolph Valentino, Cole Porter, Truman Capote, Rock Hudson, and — from the 1960s onwards — much of the pre-Stonewall New York gay literary world. A fire in May 1977 killed nine men, and the Everard was closed for six months while the city fought over whether to reopen it. It reopened under new management, upgraded and now legal (bathhouses had not been formally licensed as commercial premises before the fire). It stayed open through the arrival of AIDS; the New York City Department of Health closed it in December 1985 as part of the citywide bathhouse closure order under Mayor Koch, after 97 years of operation. The 28th Street building was demolished in 2003. The lot now houses a mid-rise commercial building; there is no plaque. What the visitor sees is a nondescript stretch of West 28th Street between Broadway and 5th Avenue, in what's now the wholesale-flower district by day and a nightlife zone after 10 PM. Worth the visit if you're making the argument that queer New York's history is more than the Village. The address matters because it demonstrates how much of the city's gay life happened above 14th Street and how thoroughly commercial and physical infrastructure has been razed. Approx. 20 minutes' walk from the Stonewall Monument via 6th Avenue.

I visited Aire for the first time with my husband to celebrate my birthday, and overall it was a nice experience. The signature Monet couples experience was very relaxing and the masseuses did a great job. The facilities and locker room were truly zen and very clean. I would’ve given 5 stars but one thing did somewhat stain the day. After I changed in the locker room, a team member approached me congratulating me on my pregnancy and started to ask how far along I am. I’m not pregnant - actually, I’m 3 months postpartum and already insecure about my slowly-deflating body, so that was great lol. She explained she was verifying because my treatment isn't safe during pregnancy — and I appreciate that safety is taken seriously here. But the booking process already covers this: every guest checks a box at reservation confirming they aren't pregnant or within six weeks postpartum. I had already done that screening. What happened at check-in wasn't an extra safety layer; it was a guess about my body. I completely understand the precaution and glad they look out for safety. It just sucks to be reminded that I still appear bigger than my baseline with an immediate “congratulations on your pregnancy” on my birthday, but it is what it is. I can imagine someone less understanding taking a greater offense to this, so I’d suggest the staff be careful next time… While it was a nice overall time, I’d hesitate to return I guess until I’m skinny again lol.

I wanted to take a moment to recognize one of the spa attendants for the exceptional level of care and hospitality he provided during my recent visit, I think his name was Sameer. Unfortunately, our visit started with a booking issue that created some unnecessary stress. While that situation was eventually resolved, it left us feeling somewhat deflated at the beginning of what was supposed to be a special celebration. Thankfully, once we were in the spa, Sameer completely transformed our experience. From the moment he greeted us, he was warm, attentive, and genuinely invested in making us feel welcome. He checked in on us without ever being intrusive, and went above and beyond to make our stay feel special. His kindness completely shifted the atmosphere and reminded us why we have always enjoyed visiting Aire. He turned what could have been a disappointing visit into one we will remember for the right reasons. He even made sure to be a bridge of communication while our friend group was in separate locker rooms!! 10 stars🌟

I was genuinely looking forward to experiencing AIRE, which makes it disappointing to write this review. My experience never actually made it to the spa—it was entirely with the reservation and customer service process. When I booked my appointment over the phone, the representative had significant difficulty entering my information. I had to repeat and spell my name and email address multiple times, and despite correcting the email address several times, it was still entered incorrectly. As a result, I never received my confirmation email. Later that day, I called to see if I could move my reservation to another available time. I was told this wasn’t possible because of AIRE’s 48-hour modification policy. I completely understand that businesses need cancellation policies, and my frustration was never with the existence of the policy itself. It was with the fact that my confirmation email was never delivered due to an error made during the booking process, and I felt there was little interest in considering the circumstances. I also asked if I could speak with a manager who might have the authority to review my situation, but that request was declined. What followed was an extended email exchange in which my call recordings were reviewed multiple times to confirm that the policy had been read to me. While I understand why businesses retain recordings, the focus on proving that the policy had been disclosed felt more important than acknowledging the overall customer experience or the fact that my contact information had been entered incorrectly. Although I was ultimately offered the opportunity to reschedule, by that point the experience had already left me feeling more frustrated than relaxed. When you’re booking a luxury spa, you’re paying not only for the facilities but also for the feeling of being cared for from the very first interaction. Instead, I found myself caught up in policies, call recordings, and lengthy back-and-forth communication. I realized I would likely spend my visit thinking about the interaction rather than relaxing, so I chose not to reschedule. My hope in sharing this is simply that AIRE considers approaching situations like this with a little more empathy and flexibility. I have no doubt the baths themselves are beautiful, but first impressions matter, and unfortunately mine prevented me from ever experiencing them.

Had the most amazing experience at AIRE upper east side yesterday! The staff and management were wonderful and accommodating despite us running late. I truly appreciate how polite and empathetic everyone was and they made sure we had a relaxing experience for our stay there. 1000/10 recommend!
