The Society Hotel - Portland

Stopped at the cafe today as most of Old Town is closed for Memorial Day. Still a lovely lobby cafe. (It's been years) Nice musical vibe and relaxed service. For those that may have sensitivity to smells, the lobby here is perfumed like so many hotels these days. I'd almost ventute it's a re-creation of a certain five star chain. I have a little trouble, but was okay sitting here.

It's a fantastic historical building that is kept very clean. The barista, Jasmin is always there to greet me with a smile, kind words, and the best cup of coffe money can buy in these parts...Cafe Vita roast from Seattle! My favorite! Victoria is usually the night person here and she is the best hotel host I have ever encountered! She actually runs a Portland city tour on the weekends, so you can only imagine how much information of the city she has blessed me with! She always is smiling in every situaion, even when I have witnessed not so nice guests try to have their way. Victoria is a master at defusion and making any situation into a good one! The entire staff is great! So nice and welcoming! I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Portland!

This is a gem of a hotel in Old Town Portland. The service, the food at the cafe, and the room were perfect! I paid $79 for a queen bed private room that was top notch! The bathrooms are located in the hall across from the rooms. Everything about the hotel was sparkling clean. There's all kinds of restaurants and bars and site seeing places in Old Town near this hotel. And it's literally 7 blocks to Union Station, which is a huge plus for weary travelers looking for a nice place to rest for an exceptionally reasonable price. The one thing about being in Old Town is that there is a very obvious homeless population there. This is due to the fact that the social programs that are available to that population are located in Old Town. I did not experience any problems or panhandling with the homeless population, though I did witness a few openly using drugs. I am not complaining about the homelessness and drug users that are so outwardly obvious in Old Town, just making the observation for others who might want to consider this aspect in choosing where to stay. That said, there are several hotels to choose from in Old Town, and all of those hotels face the same situation of the homeless population wandering around. All that said, I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Had a few good stays in different rooms. Brick wall view and no tv but an excellent writer or hikers retreat! Chinatown next door is culturally unique and waterfront is so nice in bloom. Recommend for those who need space from unnecessary tvs and hotel extra costs or to save a little time money energy. The owners run efficiently. Rooftop is exquisite view and many staff members kind too. Food not as ordered. Apology and offer remade but girl was new and said she had never made it before so…overcooked eggs when ordered over easy isn’t usual for the first time cook. GM insisted on another being made so we offered it to a homeless person in need of lunch. Not sure but imho, the doors could be more gently opened and closed. Fireplace ambiance so nice beautiful great room high ceilings … with nice decor and a little potential for more in the service dept. Location can surely be 5 stars when including all as welcomed friends after reflecting on things… eggs over easy pleasey

This was my first time staying in a hostel and it was pretty decent. First, the staff was incredible. I was there 3 nights on a weekend, and they were so accommodating, friendly and helpful. Second, unfortunately the AC wasn’t working in the rooms, so it was way too hot inside (hotter than outside, it was 79 when I visited!). The website said air conditioning so I booked. I have a medical condition that proceeded to get worse and cause me pain because I couldn’t properly cool down for the full 3 days I was there. There were no fans in the room, so no air flow, I had to spend extra money to buy one while I stayed there. Clean bedding was provided and anything else that was needed as well, they helped me make ice packs to cool down with as well which was so much appreciated, but was a tiny band aid to the no air conditioning issue. Multiple storage options for bags was great. Third, the location is very accessible to the light rail line stops, tons of scooters around to rent quickly, and short walk to the river walkway and some restaurants. The cafe in the lobby is super cool, loved having it accessible. It’s a cool place with very attentive and welcoming staff. No air conditioning, not even a fan in the room is a huge issue, which is why I will not return.

This is the second time I have stayed First time was in a bunk. Second time in a room. Both times have been awesome. The staff are Amazing, super friendly.

Economic and comfortable. Why spend too much when I can have great baristas and breakfast and simple but comfortable accommodations? Prime location with public transportation to attractions in any direction. Sweet and savory. The staff are simply the best.

I would recommend any other hotel unless you have no other options. The lobby is aesthetic but everything else is below expectations. Location: next to a safe injection site and the entry way smelled like pee. You essentially have to step over people sleeping on the street. Rooms: the toilet had mold growing in it. The duvet cover was missing and the insert had sharpie on it. The sheets were dirty. The furnace will keep you up all night long. The pictures do not show how small the suite we booked was and the “upgraded view” was of a wall about two feet away. There is nowhere to put your stuff other than the ground. the patio: half was closed and what was there were just a few tables and chairs. The staff: friendly but cannot compensate for the state of the rooms. We survived one night with the worst sleep while still wearing earplugs. We abandoned the rest of our stay and are eating the cost even though we did ask for a refund. We asked the front desk and were instructed to email the generic line. We have not gotten a response. Edit following response: Interesting choice to respond to reviews but not private emails. The toilets are cleaned but there is mold… sure. Excuse me, not furnace but “heating”. You advertise more views for the art suites. Please elaborate on what that means then. Toilet was still moldy. Sheets were still dirty. Comforter still covered in sharpie.

Such a cute little hotel/hostel quiter than I expected. Just be aware that some private rooms share bathrooms and that you make sure that you take your key card to the restroom with you. Nothing like going down to the lobby in your robe... evilgrin
