Craiglie is a small coastal village in the Shire of Douglas, Far North Queensland, sitting right on the Captain Cook Highway about 6 kilometres south of Port Douglas. Despite a population of only around a thousand people, it holds one of the most recognisable names in Australian LGBTQIA+ travel — Turtle Cove Beach Resort — and shares the famously relaxed, gay-welcoming character of the Port Douglas tourism strip. This is reef-and-rainforest country: the Coral Sea is on one side, the Cassowary Range on the other, and the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree are both within easy reach.
History and Context
For most of the twentieth century this stretch of coast was quiet sugar-cane and fishing country. Tourism took off in the 1980s when Port Douglas was developed as a luxury gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, and the area's gay profile grew alongside it. Turtle Cove, on its secluded beach between Cairns and Port Douglas, has operated as an adults-only gay and lesbian resort for decades and remains the anchor of the local LGBTQIA+ story. Unlike Cairns, which built up a cluster of gay bars, Craiglie and Port Douglas developed as an integrated, welcoming holiday destination rather than a venue district.
Where the LGBTQIA+ Scene Is
The dedicated LGBTQIA+ venue in the immediate area is the SandBar at Turtle Cove Beach Resort, which has long been described by Tourism Queensland as the region's only gay and lesbian bar and nightclub. There are no separate gay clubs in Port Douglas town itself — instead the mainstream pubs and bars along Macrossan and Wharf streets (places like the Court House Hotel, the Iron Bar and Hemingway's Brewery) are casually gay-friendly spots for a drink. If you want a full gay night out with a choice of venues, Cairns, about an hour south, is the regional hub.
Where to Stay
Accommodation is the real strength here. Turtle Cove Beach Resort (Captain Cook Highway, between Cairns and Port Douglas) is the flagship: adults-only, clothing-optional, on its own private beach, relaunched in 2025. In Port Douglas proper, Pink Flamingo Resort (115 Davidson Street) is gay-owned and operated, adults-only, with a lush tropical garden and poolside bar, and Mai Tai Resort is a gay-owned adults-only retreat in the hills behind town. The Mediterranean Port Douglas is an LGBTQIA+-owned boutique apartment hotel. Beyond these, a long run of welcoming stays along Davidson Street — Dougies Backpackers, Birch Resort, Coral Beach Lodge, Lazy Lizard Motor Inn — plus larger resorts such as Oaks Port Douglas, Niramaya Villas & Spa and Mowbray By The Sea round out the choice. Australian law prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexuality, so same-sex couples can book anywhere with confidence.
Port Douglas hosts its own LGBTQIA+ celebration, the Heatwave Festival, held in February (it grew out of the earlier "Hot & Steamy" weekend and relaunched under the Heatwave name). Expect pool parties, dance events and reef-and-rainforest excursions aimed at a queer crowd. The region's biggest queer festival, the Cairns Pride Festival, takes place in October about an hour south. Dates move from year to year, so check the latest schedule before booking flights.
Beaches and the Outdoors
Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas's long palm-fringed strand, is the main place to swim and sunbathe, and Turtle Cove has its own clothing-optional cove. From Craiglie you are perfectly placed for the Great Barrier Reef — day boats leave Port Douglas marina for the outer reef — and for the Daintree Rainforest, reached via the Daintree River ferry, and Mossman Gorge with its rainforest walks and swimming holes. These are nature experiences open to everyone; they are not marketed as gay, but they are the reason most visitors come.
Food and Dining
Port Douglas has a strong dining scene for a small town, from beachfront cafes to seafood restaurants and the brewery and bars around the marina. Craiglie itself is residential with limited dining, so most meals out happen in Port Douglas a few minutes up the road. Cairns offers the widest choice if you want a bigger night.
Getting There and Around
The nearest airport is Cairns International Airport, about an hour's drive south. The sealed Captain Cook Highway links the airport, Cairns, Craiglie and Port Douglas, and it is one of Australia's most scenic coastal drives. Public transport is limited, so a hire car is the easiest way to explore the reef, rainforest and Tablelands day trips, and to reach the Cairns gay bars. Shuttle transfers between Cairns Airport and Port Douglas are also widely available.
Safety
Australia is among the safest and most welcoming countries in the world for LGBTQIA+ travellers, with nationwide marriage equality since 2017 and strong anti-discrimination protections at both federal and Queensland state level. Port Douglas and Craiglie are easy-going, tourism-focused communities with a long history of hosting gay visitors. As anywhere in regional Australia, ordinary common sense is enough; there are no specific safety concerns for LGBTQIA+ travellers here.
