Pride House Tokyo Legacy

This is a free space specifically for the LGBTQ community. The first drink is free, but subsequent drinks are on a donation basis. You can bring in food purchased from other establishments, but there are no trash cans, so please take your trash with you.

I walked past this space a couple of years back but it was closed! So I decided to come back when I visited Tokyo recently. I felt very safe and even had a really heartwarming conversation on LGBTQ+ issues in Japan and in Singapore with Kikumi-san!

Great work by great people, especially in welcoming those who arrive in Tokyo from other places.

I visited for the first time the other day, and it was a great opportunity to take a break in Shinjuku. There were many books that interested me, and I would like to use the place again! It would be even better if there were opportunities for interaction!

After a walk in the nearby gardens, I happened to drop into Pride House Tokyo after spotting the flags displayed outside. I feel very lucky to have come across this space during my short stay in Shinjuku. The folks working in the space were incredibly welcoming. Despite my knowing essentially zero Japanese, one woman was happy to answer the questions I had about the space, and about queer issues in Japan, and in turn asked me about queer issues in the States and my home state of Indiana. The space has many resources for queer people in Japan, appropriately they are nearly entirely in Japanese, but there were some pamphlets and booklets in English which they graciously shared with me. They shared how Pride House was the only permanent queer resource center in Japan (at least at the time of my visit), how they partner with other groups such as the Deaf community, and how they offer counseling in Japanese and Chinese. If you are a queer traveler, or even if you arn't, consider dropping in and buying a drink or a cute pin. They can really use the support of people who may be coming from places which have a larger pool of resources for queer folks.
