The Easter that shaped American gay nightlife

White Party Palm Springs is the oldest continuously running gay circuit festival in the United States, and one of the most important ever produced anywhere. Jeffrey Sanker started it in 1989 as a Los Angeles pool party — his response to a Hollywood scene emptied by the AIDS crisis — and grew it into an Easter-weekend institution that migrated to Palm Springs and stayed. For thirty-five years it was Sanker's baby, a Grammy-adjacent production with Whitney and Madonna and Cher headlining the classic era. Sanker died of cancer in 2020, hours after that year's event was cancelled by COVID. The brand survived him — his family and long-time producers continue the party under the Jeffrey Sanker Presents banner — and Easter weekend at White Party is now something more than a circuit event. It's the annual reunion of an American generation.

The crowd — and why it doesn't sort like other circuits

30,000 people descend on Palm Springs for the four-day weekend, and the demographic is unlike XLSIOR or Circuit Barcelona in one specific way: the age range. Because White Party has been running since 1989, its returning crowd is now genuinely intergenerational — men who came for their first WP in their twenties in 1994 and have brought their husbands, their reformed party friends, and yes their sons every year since. Twenty-two-year-olds fresh from the LA app scene meet sixty-eight-year-old veterans on the pool decks, and both parties treat it as normal. The core is still American West Coast (LA, San Francisco, Palm Springs residents especially, since PS itself is one of America's gayest cities) but the international pull is real — Australians, Brits, and Canadians disproportionately.

The Palm Springs advantage — the city IS the party

Something no European circuit destination can match: Palm Springs is a gay city, not a straight city being borrowed for a week. Roughly 50% of its residents are LGBTQ+, three of the last four mayors have been openly gay, and the town runs on gay tourism year-round. The upshot: White Party doesn't takeover the city — the city IS White Party for that weekend. Every restaurant is your restaurant. Every pool bar in Downtown or Warm Sands has been set up for gay men for decades. There is no "we shouldn't hold hands here" moment. If you've done circuit festivals in cities that only tolerate you when you're spending money, the psychological difference is startling.

The Easter weekend program

The classic White Party shape, refined over three decades:

• Thursday night — the opening party, historically the first-timer welcome
• Friday — daytime pool parties at the host resort, evening main events
• Saturday — the marquee day: the main White Party itself (dress code: white, literally, and it matters), plus late-night after-hours
• Easter Sunday — the T-Dance, the closing pool party, and a survivors' dinner that stretches into an evening event

Multiple resorts host their own official and unofficial pool parties throughout — the Riviera Palm Springs, the Renaissance, the Margaritaville have all been recent hosts. The whole city becomes the venue.

The real budget

America pricing hits harder than Europe, but the Palm Springs advantage moderates it. Full weekend passes typically run $400-800, with tables and VIP packages reaching several thousand. Hotels are the ambush: Palm Springs at Easter is at year-peak, and the desirable Warm Sands men-only resorts (INNdulge, Casitas Laquita, etc.) are booked a year ahead. Drink prices are American ($15-18 cocktails), Uber is easy, and you don't need a rental car if you stay in the walkable downtown-Warm Sands corridor. Honest all-in for the weekend: $1,800-3,500 per person, most of that being the hotel.

Where it sits on the calendar

Easter weekend, every year, non-negotiable. That means WP is your American gay spring — Miami Winter Party is in early March, WP is Easter, LA Pride is early June. The circuit calendar goes desert-Miami-Palm Springs and then heads for Europe (Barcelona in early August, Mykonos late August). Do WP once and you'll understand why the Americans keep coming back to a party that just quietly turned 35.
