Brisbane evenings are warm and heavy, the river slides past under the city lights, and in October the jacarandas drop purple blossom over the footpaths. By night the crowd heads for Fortitude Valley, "the Valley", with its pubs, clubs and neon along Brunswick and Ann Streets. A few minutes north, in Bowen Hills, a pool, a spa and a steam room wait behind the door of the city's gay sauna. The sauna scene is small: one proper gay sauna, Wet Spa & Sauna, and one small cruise club in the Valley, The Den. Wet is the one most visitors go to, and it's well run, with long hours and free sexual health testing twice a week.

Legal in one line: Queensland decriminalised sex between men in 1991, a 2017 law lets people apply to have historical convictions for consensual gay sex expunged, and same-sex marriage has been legal across Australia since 2017. Saunas and cruise clubs are legal private venues for adults; an indecent act in a public place is a crime under section 227 of the Queensland Criminal Code, with a maximum of two years' imprisonment.

Wet Spa & Sauna: Brisbane's gay sauna

Wet Spa & Sauna is at 22 Jeays Street, Bowen Hills, a short walk from Bowen Hills station and just north of the Valley. It's a men-only bathhouse, and its website refers to a 25-year history. misterb&b calls it Brisbane's only gay sauna, and we found no other in 2025–26.

Wet lists a large pool, a spa (jacuzzi), a Finnish dry sauna overlooking it, a steam room, private rooms and cabins, a private video room, a maze and a café serving coffee and snacks, and says the building is fully air-conditioned. misterb&b adds glory holes, a sling area and an upstairs TV lounge.

    • Hours: Monday to Thursday and Sunday 11:00–23:00; Friday and Saturday 11:00–02:00. Public holidays 11:00–23:00, and it's closed on Christmas Day. These are the hours on Wet's website; a couple of older reviews say it has closed earlier than advertised.
    • Prices: standard entry is A$30. Concession card holders (Centrelink seniors or health care card), students and under-25s pay A$27 with proof. The Wet Card, sold at the door, gives 10 entries for A$270. Prices are as published at the time of writing.
    • Theme nights: Wet lists Towelless Tuesdays, when towels are optional downstairs, and Naked Fridays from 18:00.
    • Testing on site: the RAPID peer testing service offers free HIV and STI testing every Tuesday and Friday from 14:00 to 19:00. Wet's website says you don't need a Medicare card or an appointment, which makes it handy for visitors.
    • ID: it's strictly 18+, and the website refers to an ID scanning policy, so bring photo ID.

What to expect: reviews are mixed but steady. Visitors often praise the friendly staff, cleanliness and the steam room; others say parts of the building feel dated and that it's pricier than Sydney or Melbourne, and older reviews mention the pool being cold in winter. One reviewer recommends Sunday afternoons, and a 2024 visitor found the towel-free night busy.

The Den: a dry cruise club in the Valley

The Den is at 187 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley, on two floors above an adult shop. Travel Gay describes it as a small, "slightly sleazy" men's cruise club and lists private cabins, a dark room, glory holes, slings and a maze, and opening hours of 09:00 to midnight daily. Entry isn't published; a February 2025 visitor reported about A$20.

Recent reviews describe it as quiet, especially at lunchtime, with a mostly older crowd, and some complain about cleanliness and hours not being kept. A 2021 reviewer said weekends after 21:00 were busier. Go with low expectations and check before you go.

Closed: Bodyline, in South Brisbane, which Star Observer called the city's longest-standing gay men's sauna, closed in January 2018 after about 25 years. Club 29 (also listed as Klub Kruise), the cruise club at 29 McLachlan Street in the Valley, closed in July 2022.

Beats and the law. In Australia a beat is an outdoor or public place where men meet for sex. We don't send you to them. An indecent act in a public place is a crime under section 227 of the Queensland Criminal Code, with up to two years' imprisonment, and isolated parks and toilets after dark make you an easy target for robbery or assault. With Wet open every day until 23:00 or later, there's no reason to take the risk. If you're in trouble, call 000.

    Before and after: the Valley

Wet and The Den sit either side of Fortitude Valley, and the night usually starts or ends there. The Sportsman Hotel ("Sporties") in Spring Hill, gay-owned and run for three decades, is the classic pub for quiz nights, cabaret and drag, and the Brisbears meet in its downstairs Bunker Bar. The Wickham is a historic Valley pub; it dropped its official gay-bar status in a 2014 rebrand but is still described as welcoming. The Beat Megaclub on Ann Street, open since 1983, has long been the Valley's late-night LGBTQ+ dance club; its building has since been sold and Star Observer reported its future as uncertain, so check its socials first. South of the river, Come to Daddy in West End is an independent queer bar with Saturday drag.

    A Brisbane day

    • On the river: the CityCat ferries are the best way to see Brisbane. Ride one to New Farm, walk through New Farm Park and finish at the Brisbane Powerhouse, the arts centre in a converted power station that hosts the Melt queer arts festival.
    • A cold one: a pot of XXXX, Queensland's own lager, on a pub veranda is a Brisbane ritual, especially in the sticky weeks before the summer storms.
    • Late eats: the Valley's Chinatown, around Duncan Street, is good for late-night dumplings and noodles between the bars and the sauna.

    Practical tips

    • Getting there: Wet is a short walk from Bowen Hills station; The Den is a few minutes on foot from Fortitude Valley station. Translink runs Brisbane's trains, buses and ferries; check fares and its journey planner before you set out.
    • Getting home late: on Friday and Saturday nights the last regular trains on the Beenleigh, Ipswich and Caboolture lines leave Central between about 00:35 and 01:10. From midnight to 05:00, Nightlink buses leave from the Valley and the city, with security guards on board, and Nightlink trains leave Fortitude Valley station around 03:45–03:55 for the Beenleigh, Caboolture and Ipswich lines. The Valley also has two secure FlatFare taxi ranks with marshals and CCTV on weekend nights: on Wickham Street just past Brunswick Street, and on Ann Street near Duncan Street. Wet closes at 02:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, so a taxi or rideshare from the door is often simplest.
    • Cards and cash: Brisbane is overwhelmingly card and contactless; a little cash for tips doesn't hurt.
    • Health: use RAPID at Wet for free testing. The Brisbane Sexual Health Clinic (Queensland Health) is at Level 1, 270 Roma Street, open weekdays 08:30–16:00 by appointment only, phone (07) 3837 5611, and offers STI testing and treatment, HIV care and PrEP. If you need PEP after a risk, act within 72 hours: call the clinic, go to a hospital emergency department, or ring 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) out of hours.
    • Apps: Grindr is the main app in Brisbane.
    • Consent and chems: "no" is always enough. Never mix GHB with alcohol, and call 000 in an emergency.

    Brisbane Pride 2026

The Brisbane Pride Festival launched on Saturday 26 September 2026 and ran events through September and October. It builds to Saturday 24 October: the Rally gathers from 09:00 at the corner of Ann and Brunswick Streets in the Valley, the March steps off at 10:00 down Brunswick Street, and marchers reach New Farm Park around 11:00 for Fair Day, which runs from 10:00 to 17:00. It's Fair Day's first return to New Farm Park in four years, after a spell at Musgrave Park; tickets are sold through Eventbrite.

The same day, the Melt Festival (21 October to 8 November 2026) holds its River Pride Parade from 16:00, with the Melt opening night party at the Brisbane Powerhouse. Expect a busy weekend at Wet and in the Valley.
