About this place Sportsman Hotel

The Sportsman Hotel in Spring Hill is one of Brisbane's oldest and most enduring gay venues — a pub that has been serving the city's gay community for decades and has built a specific identity around a bears, working-class, and older demographic that is underrepresented in the club-oriented Valley scene. Spring Hill is the suburb immediately west of the CBD and immediately south of Fortitude Valley, giving the Sportsman a position that is central without being in the entertainment district's core. The pub is unpretentious and genuinely community-oriented: affordable drinks, regular programming that includes bear nights and themed events, and the specific warmth of a venue that has been a safe and welcoming space for a diverse gay male community through decades of change in Brisbane's social landscape. The Sportsman is the venue that demonstrates the breadth of Brisbane's LGBTQ+ scene — the counterpart to The Beat's nightclub aspirations, serving the part of the community that prefers a pub to a club and values familiarity over novelty. For visitors who want to experience Brisbane's gay scene beyond the Fortitude Valley mainstream, the Sportsman is a rewarding destination.

Came here for the first time the other day, brought here by a friend. Was enjoyable and the team members seemed friendly and helpful. I watched one of the drag shows and it was fun and entertaining. The toilet facilities need some love, with broken locks on the cublicle doors and inconsistent lighting. Came for a second time and got some food. Was decent and not too unreasonably priced for the portion size.

Walked in there as soon as I got to the bar I was surrounded by gay guys asking me to sit with them calling me honey o told them I wasn't gay 1 said I'd fix that I walked away with a drink and still got mobbed by these fleas so I had no choice of knocking the 2 out and sat back down and enjoyed my drink then left what a night to remember so gay lads if a straight guy wants to come in for a drink let him be and you and your boyfriend's will be safe . For that I will not be returning Il spend my money else where. And for those who want to relax don't go here not worth the hassle.

My chicken parmigiana was absolutely 💯% delicious. A superb crumb not oily or greasy coating a tender chicken breast. Went for the Queenslander topping with ham cheese and two pineapple rings. Served with a tasty salad with just the right amount of dressing and generous chips. So impressed and glad to support Sporties Hotel. Friendly wait staff 🤩
