Peregian Beach, Queensland: The Honest 2026 Guide The honest summary: Peregian Beach is a quiet surf village on the Sunshine Coast with one gay business, a men-only resort, and no gay bars.

Gay neighbourhood

The nearest regular queer night is in Maroochydore, and the nearest gay district is Fortitude Valley in Brisbane, about 125 km south.

Bars & nightlife

Come for the beach, the bush walks and a slow week, not for nightlife. Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage has been legal across Australia since December 2017. Queensland decriminalised sex between men in 1991, abolished the gay panic defence and opened expungement of historical convictions in 2017, protects sexuality and gender identity under the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, and has allowed birth-certificate sex changes by self-declaration since 24 June 2024. Where Peregian Beach is Peregian Beach sits on the David Low Way between Coolum Beach, about 6 km south, and Noosa, roughly 15 to 20 km north.

The coastal part of the suburb, including the village and the beach, is in Noosa Shire; the western hinterland belongs to the Sunshine Coast Region. The 2021 census counted 4,972 people. Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY) at Marcoola is about 20 minutes' drive away, and Brisbane is about 1 hour 45 minutes by road. Translink bus 620 runs along the coast between Noosa Heads and Maroochydore via Peregian, Coolum and Marcoola.

Queensland's flat 50-cent fares, introduced in August 2024 and made permanent in 2025, apply on it. Check the last bus before you plan an evening out, because services stop in the evening. The village itself is small: a patrolled beach, a park, cafés, a pub and a cluster of holiday apartments. According to Noosa Council, the Peregian Beach Markets run on the first and third Sunday of each month, 7:30am to 12:30pm, in Peregian Park on Kingfisher Drive.

The Peregian section of Noosa National Park wraps around the township. Queensland Parks lists the 3 km Ocean Walk to Peregian and the short Emu Mountain summit walk, which looks along the coast from Noosa to Maroochydore and inland to the Glass House Mountains. In September 2019 a deliberately lit bushfire spread from Peregian Springs towards the beach and destroyed about 11 homes; the bush has since grown back. The gay side: one resort Hideaway Noosa Men's Beach Resort, at 386 David Low Way, is the only gay-specific business in Peregian, and the only one we could find on the Sunshine Coast.

Its own website describes it as a private resort marketed to gay and bi men, clothing optional, with a saltwater pool and an outdoor spa in tropical gardens a short walk from the beach. misterb&b and Star Observer have both written it up, and Google rates it 4.6 from about 110 reviews. Booking-site reviews run to August 2025 and we found no news of a closure, but the website is old, so phone ahead on +61 7 5448 1006. Everything else in Peregian is mainstream. Same-sex couples should have no trouble in the village's apartments and resorts, but none of them markets itself to LGBTQ+ guests.

Where to stay

We don't list the Peregian Beach Hotel, the village pub, as a gay bar, because nothing suggests it is one.

Bars & nightlife

Nightlife: drive or take the bus There are no gay bars, clubs or saunas in Peregian Beach, in Noosa, or anywhere else we could find on the Sunshine Coast. What exists is a few regular nights in mainstream venues. Queensland's official tourism site lists Blush, a Sunday LGBTQIA+ night with drag at Peak Wine Bar in Maroochydore, and Drag Queen Bingo on Mondays at Kings Beach Tavern in Caloundra. Neither page carries a date, so check the venue's social media before you go.

The Sunshine Coast Mardi Gras party at the Banana Bender Pub at Aussie World, Palmview, ran for the fifth time in June 2025; a 2026 edition had not been announced at the time of writing.

Gay neighbourhood

For an actual gay district you need Brisbane. In Fortitude Valley, The Wickham at 308 Wickham Street has been a gay venue since the 1970s and hosts Big Gay Day. The Beat Megaclub on Ann Street is still trading, but a developer bought the site in September 2026 with plans for an apartment tower, so don't assume it will be there for long. Alexandria Bay Alexandria Bay, in the Noosa section of the national park about 10 km north, has been used as an unofficial clothing-optional beach since the 1960s and has long drawn gay men.

Nudity is not legal on any Queensland beach. In April 2023 police used a drone and fined 11 people for wilful exposure after complaints about sexual behaviour in the dunes, and they said patrols would continue. A 2023 survey by Noosa MP Sandy Bolton found most respondents backed a legal clothing-optional beach, but the law has not changed.

Pride & events

Pride and events The Sunshine Coast Pride Festival is run by the Sunshine Coast Pride Network. The 2025 festival ran from 14 to 23 November, and its Fair Day, postponed by bad weather, was held on 29 March 2026 at Kings Beach Amphitheatre in Caloundra. At the time of writing the network's site lists the next Fair Day as "June TBC" and the 2027 festival without dates. Open Doors Youth Service supports LGBTIQ+ young people aged 12 to 24 across South East Queensland.

Nothing LGBTQ+ is held in Peregian itself. Closed or changed / Gone but still Googled Older listings, including earlier versions of this page, said Noosa Heads has "a more developed gay scene with dedicated venues". It doesn't: we found no gay bar in Noosa. They also placed Peregian "90 kilometers north of Brisbane"; by road it is about 125 km.

The Beat in Brisbane is still open, but its building has been sold. Practical tips - Rent a car if you want to get to Maroochydore or Caloundra at night and back. - The beach and the Sunday markets are busiest in December and January and during school holidays. - Queensland has no daylight saving, so in summer it runs an hour behind Sydney and Melbourne. - Swim between the flags. Alexandria Bay has no lifeguards. A few words Locals shorten Alexandria Bay to "A-Bay" and call the Sunshine Coast "the Coast". "Arvo" means afternoon, and a "bottle-o" is a bottle shop.
