The honest summary: Plovdiv is Bulgaria's second city, with about 330,000 people, a Roman theatre still in use, a hillside Old Town of painted Revival-era houses, and Kapana, a grid of small streets full of bars and galleries. It was European Capital of Culture in 2019. It's a lovely place for a weekend of history, food and wine. It isn't a place for a gay night out: at the time of writing Plovdiv has no gay bar, club or sauna, and it has never held an official Pride march. Bulgaria's small gay scene is in Sofia, about 144 km and two hours away. Go to Plovdiv for the city itself, keep a low profile in public, and plan any nightlife around a trip to the capital.
Legal in one line: Sex between men has been legal in Bulgaria since 1968, and the age of consent has been equal since 2002. There is no marriage or civil partnership, because the 1991 Constitution (Art. 46) defines marriage as a union of a man and a woman. The 2004 Protection Against Discrimination Act covers sexual orientation. Since August 2024, schools have been banned from "propaganda" of "non-traditional sexual orientation".
Is there a gay scene in Plovdiv?
Not one you can walk into. We checked Bulgarian-language press and forums, the international gay guides, and the websites and social pages of every Plovdiv bar that older listings (including earlier versions of this page) tied to the scene. None of them presents itself as gay or queer today. The last bar that did, Caligula, under the steps of Sahat Tepe hill, has been shut for years: in November 2022 the newspaper 24 Chasa reported that the building was padlocked and falling apart, and that the municipality had bought it.
Social life for LGBTQ+ locals is mostly private: friends' flats, the apps, and trips to Sofia. Kapana and the Old Town attract a young, artsy crowd, and you'll see more relaxed attitudes there than in the suburbs. But "relaxed" in Plovdiv still means discreet. Public affection between two men draws attention, and the city has a record of football ultras turning up at LGBTQ+ events (see below).
Gone, mislabelled or never gay (but still Googled)
Caligula / Калигула: the city's last gay bar, below Sahat Tepe. Closed; the building was padlocked by 2022.
PLOVEDIV: an LGBT-friendly café and gallery on Kurtevich street. Permanently closed, although Spartacus still lists it.
Monic Spa: listed in old sauna guides; it had closed by 2011.
Babylon Club (Lyuben Karavelov 2): a straight striptease bar, not a gay club.
G Club, Club Code, Bally Club, Barber&Cat, Rock Bar Download, Play Along Club, Horny Garden: real, ordinary bars and clubs that aggregator sites (and once this site) labelled gay or gay-friendly with no evidence. We've removed them from our gay listings.
Cupidon: listed as a gay venue in one international guide; it's a sex shop.
"Plovdiv Pride in June": you'll still find this claim online, including in an older version of this guide. It isn't true. There has never been an official Pride march in Plovdiv.
Pride and community history
Plovdiv's LGBTQ+ history is short and mostly about pushback:
June 2013: football ultras broke up a screening at an LGBT film festival.
2019, European Capital of Culture year: the GLAS Foundation brought #BalkanPride, a photo exhibition, to the SKLAD space from 4 to 16 July 2019. It was an exhibition, not a march. Homophobic graffiti appeared on the Capital of Culture offices, and some councillors tried to cancel the show; the city council rejected that on 8 April 2019. A deputy mayor said publicly at the time that there would be no gay parade in Plovdiv.
June 2020: a small informal "mini-Pride" in Kapana, a bar night and a short walk with about 100 people. It hasn't been repeated.
September and October 2020: young football fans attacked teenagers they took to be gay in Tsar Simeon Garden (27 September). A "Plovdiv Against Hate" walk on 10 October drew about 70 people and was surrounded by more than 120 masked counter-protesters.
May 2021: football hooligans disrupted an LGBT book launch at the national radio building in Plovdiv.
The real Pride is Sofia Pride, held every June since 2008. The 2026 edition was on Saturday 13 June, with a programme in Prince's Garden from 16:00 and the march at 18:00. A rival "Family March" was held the same day. The 2027 date had not been announced when we checked in October 2026; it is usually a Saturday in mid-June. See our Sofia guide.
Organisations and health
Bulgaria's LGBTQ+ organisations are based in Sofia and work nationally: the Bilitis Foundation (which organises Sofia Pride), the GLAS Foundation, Youth LGBT Organisation Deystvie (legal help) and Single Step (support for young people). None has a Plovdiv office, but all answer enquiries from across the country. A small local group, ЛГБТ Пловдив (LGBT Plovdiv), has a Facebook page and a blog; we couldn't confirm recent activity.
For free, anonymous HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis testing, go to KABKIS Plovdiv, in the south wing of the Regional Health Inspectorate at Perushtitsa 1. It's open on weekdays from 09:00 to 16:00 (+359 32 643 436), and you don't need ID.
Where to go in Plovdiv
Old Town (Staria Grad)
The cobbled hill quarter of 19th-century merchants' houses, restored in the 1970s and 80s, with house museums, galleries and the Roman Theatre, which still hosts summer concerts and opera. Streets are steep and uneven, so wear proper shoes.
Kapana
"The Trap" is a tangle of small streets just north of Dzhumaya Square that was revived for the 2019 Capital of Culture year. It is now the city's bar, café and street-art district, and the most relaxed part of town in the evening. None of its bars is gay, but the crowd is young and mixed.
Glavnata (the main street) and Tsar Simeon Garden
Knyaz Alexander I street is a long pedestrian high street that runs from Dzhumaya Square, where part of the Roman stadium is visible below street level, south to Central Square and Tsar Simeon Garden, with its musical fountains. Most central hotels are within a few minutes of it.
Where to stay
Plovdiv has no gay hotel. The hotels we list are mainstream places we mark as gay-friendly. Stay central, ideally between the Old Town and Central Square, so you can walk everywhere.
Getting there: Plovdiv Airport (PDV) is at Krumovo, about 10 to 12 km south-east of the centre. In 2026 Ryanair flies there from London Stansted and Milan Malpensa all year (plus Birmingham and Manchester in season), and Wizz Air from London Luton. Most visitors fly into Sofia (SOF) instead: Plovdiv is about 144 km away, roughly two hours by car on the Trakia motorway, 2 h 10 to 2 h 25 by bus, or about 2 h 40 by train.
Money: Bulgaria switched from the lev to the euro on 1 January 2026. Cards are widely accepted in the centre, but carry some cash for small places.
Apps: Grindr and Romeo are how most men meet here. Be careful with new contacts: meet first in a public place, and don't share your hotel room number before you're sure.
Discretion: holding hands in Kapana on a weekday evening is unlikely to cause trouble. Late at night near football grounds or on match days, it's a different story.
Cruising: older guides name a couple of city parks. We couldn't confirm that any of them is still in use, and we don't list them. Given the 2020 attack in Tsar Simeon Garden, we wouldn't recommend it.
A few words in Bulgarian
Здравейте (zdraveyte): hello
Благодаря (blagodarya): thank you
Наздраве (nazdrave): cheers
гей (gey): gay
Watch the head gestures: in Bulgaria a nod often means "no" and a side-to-side shake means "yes". When in doubt, say "да" (da, yes) or "не" (ne, no).

FAQ
Is there a gay bar in Plovdiv?
No. The last one, Caligula, closed years ago, and the bars that aggregator sites call gay are mainstream. The nearest gay bars and clubs are in Sofia, about two hours away.
Is there a Plovdiv Pride?
No. Plovdiv has never had an official Pride march. Sofia Pride is held every June; 2026's was on 13 June.
Is Plovdiv safe for gay travellers?
Mostly, if you're discreet. Same-sex relationships are legal, but there's no partnership law and attitudes are conservative. Football ultras attacked LGBTQ+ events in 2013, 2020 and 2021, so avoid public affection late at night and on match days.
Where do LGBTQ+ people meet in Plovdiv?
Mostly on the apps and in private. Kapana's bars draw the most mixed, relaxed crowd, but none of them is a gay venue.
Last verified: October 2026.
