- Which Stockholm gay venues are only open in summer?
On a Sunday night the old ship at Söder Mälarstrand hums with karaoke while the lights of Gamla Stan wobble on the black water. Down a cellar staircase near Mariatorget, regulars order a stor stark and a plate of food at a bar that has outlived most of the city's scene. In summer half of queer Stockholm moves outdoors, to pavilions and gardens by the lake. The honest picture: Stockholm doesn't have a gay village or a long street of rainbow bars. It has a handful of year-round gay bars, one big weekend club, a famous Sunday boat and a busy calendar of queer club nights that move between venues. Plan around the night of the week, and check Instagram before you go.
Legal in one line: Sweden decriminalised same-sex relations in 1944, opened marriage to same-sex couples in 2009, and bans discrimination; you can be openly gay anywhere in Stockholm.
The year-round bars
Side Track (Södermalm)
Wollmar Yxkullsgatan 7, near Mariatorget metro. A cellar bar with a small restaurant that Travel Gay and Thatsup both describe as Stockholm's oldest gay bar. It opens Wednesday to Saturday, 18:00 to 01:00, and the kitchen closes at about 23:00. Expect a relaxed crowd and a quieter room midweek, busier at weekends, with DJs and club nights on some evenings. During Pride week in 2026 it hosted a DJ every night and the Stockholm Leather Social. It makes an easy first stop for a visitor, with affordable food and a low-key mood.
The Secret Garden (Gamla Stan)
Kornhamnstorg 59, between Gamla Stan and Slussen metro. A café-bar and restaurant in a 17th-century house, with a small garden, that turns into a club later on. QX's 2026 queer map lists it as open daily from 11:00 to 03:00, calmer by day and on weekdays, with DJs and parties at weekends, when the basement dance floor opens. Travel Gay advertises a weekly "Bubbles Wednesday". The crowd is gay and mixed. Reviews are mixed on the door and service, so arrive in a good mood and expect a queue on Saturdays.
Bar Replik (Södermalm)
Hornsgatan 70. A small, cosy queer bar. QX lists it as open Tuesday to Thursday 15:00–23:00, Friday and Saturday 13:00–01:00 and Sunday 13:00–21:00. It runs drag, stand-up and DJ nights, and during Pride 2026 it had a programme every day of the week.
The Blue Oyster (Hornstull)
Långholmsgatan 15B. Listed by Thatsup (updated June 2026) as open Wednesday to Saturday, with drag bingo, drag shows and DJs. Check its social media for the current week's programme.
Clubs and the Sunday boat
Patricia (Söder Mälarstrand)
Söder Mälarstrand, Kajplats 19, near Slussen. A former ship on the Södermalm quay, and every Sunday the venue for "Patricia Sundays", the gay night that runs from 18:00 to 05:00, with karaoke, two dance floors and views of the water. In summer the outdoor decks and bars are open too. Thatsup describes the Sundays as a summer fixture, while QX lists them without a season, so check Patricia's social media before a winter visit. QX's 2026 map listed beer at 50 kr and pizza at 100 kr, which is cheap by Stockholm standards; prices change, so treat that as a guide. During Pride 2026 it hosted a fetish party on the Wednesday and the Pride finale on Sunday 2 August.
Club Backdoor (Johanneshov, near Globen)
Tolv Stockholm, Arenavägen 75, a short walk from Globen metro. The city's big gay weekend club, with three bars and three dance floors playing pop, 1990s hits, hip hop, R&B and techno, plus guest DJs and drag queens. It runs on Friday and Saturday nights. misterb&b's 2026 guide gives entry at roughly 100–200 kr at weekends and for special events. It ran four nights during Pride 2026, including the XXL Finale Party, so expect queues during Pride week.
Debaser Strand (Hornstull)
Hornstulls strand 4. A mixed club with two dance floors, open Friday and Saturday from 23:00 to 03:00 according to QX. It isn't a gay club, but it regularly hosts queer parties: Pride 2026 included the Wicked Ball, the 18th Underklädesfesten (underwear party), a Flat Mates party and Tuck 'o' Hej's Pink Pride Party.
Club nights that move around
Much of Stockholm's queer nightlife is organised by party collectives rather than fixed bars. Follow these on Instagram or in QX's listings:
- Blow: a gay Wednesday night at the Sidenkällaren function rooms, Repslagargatan 15D, Södermalm, with quizzes, karaoke, drag and speed dating; the theme changes every week.
- Moxy: a club for women and queer people, often at Nalen, Regeringsgatan 74.
- Hera: occasional parties for lesbian and queer people aged 21 and over, with female or non-binary security and bar staff.
- Lilith: a sapphic club at Hus 7 in the Slakthusområdet, plus Lilith Pub on Fridays at Sidenkällaren, where Queer Stockholm reported membership and a 30 kr cover as of May 2026.
- Flat Mates, IBNE Collective, LLIPS, Batshit, Stockwig and Tuck 'o' Hej: club nights and parties, many in the old meat-packing district, the Slakthusområdet, near Globen, which was also the 2026 Pride District.
- Stockholm Leather Social: a leather bar crawl on the last Friday of the month.
- House of Q, Malmvägen 1: a queer cultural house with bars, a restaurant and club nights, including terrace parties during Pride 2026.
- Mälarpaviljongen, Norr Mälarstrand 64, Kungsholmen: a pavilion and floating jetty on Lake Mälaren, run as a restaurant, bar and party spot, open daily from 11:00 until late in season, with concerts at weekends. It hosted Pride events in July 2026, including Teddy Bear Thursday and the Saturday House of Love party, and it supports the Rainbow Fund charity campaign.
- Lyckan i Tanto, Hornstulls strand 17: an outdoor LGBTQ bar and garden by Tantolunden, open from early April to early September, popular with women and queer people and the base for several Pride after-parties.
- Trädgården, Hammarby Slussväg 2, Skanstull: an open-air summer club that isn't exclusively queer but is known as friendly, and was the Pride Garden in 2026.
- SLM, Wollmar Yxkullsgatan 18, Södermalm: a non-profit, men-only leather and fetish club founded in 1975, with a bar and darkroom. It is for members only except on open-house nights, so apply on slmstockholm.se before your visit, and check each night's dress code.
- Blue Vision, Fridhemsgatan 44, Kungsholmen, and Manhattan, Hantverkargatan 49, Kungsholmen: cruise clubs with cabins and darkrooms, both open daily from about noon to midnight. They aren't bars for a drink and a chat. There is no gay sauna in Stockholm; our Stockholm saunas guide explains why.
- Torget, Mälartorget 13, Gamla Stan: the candlelit gay bar and restaurant in the Old Town is reported permanently closed by Thatsup, GayCities and Travel Gay. Some guides still list it.
- Babs Kök & Bar, Birger Jarlsgatan 37: reported permanently closed by Thatsup.
- Age and ID: bars and clubs can serve alcohol from 18, but many venues set their own door age, often 20 to 23, so carry photo ID. In Swedish, the ID check is "Har du leg?"
- Buying alcohol: supermarkets sell only light beer up to 3.5%. Anything stronger comes from Systembolaget, the state shop, where you must be 20; it closes early on Saturdays and stays closed on Sundays and public holidays.
- Prices: a beer under 40 kr is now a bargain; expect more in ordinary bars and 100 kr or more in clubs, hotel bars and rooftops. Many beers come in 40 cl or 50 cl, so compare the size as well as the price. Tipping on a round of drinks isn't expected.
- Cards, not cash: Stockholm nightlife is close to cashless and many places don't take cash at all, so bring a card or phone payment. Swish, the mobile payment app Swedes use, needs a Swedish bank account, so visitors pay by card.
- Late-night transport: the tunnelbana (metro) runs around the clock at weekends; on weeknights night buses take over. Tap a contactless card at the gates or buy tickets in the SL app. For Club Backdoor and the Slakthusområdet, use Globen station.
- Taxis: fares aren't regulated, so check the yellow-and-white price label on the rear window before you get in, or book through an app such as Taxi Stockholm's.
- Apps: Grindr is widely used, and the queer party collectives post their dates on Instagram.
- Health: RFSL, Sweden's LGBTQ rights organisation, publishes sexual-health information for men who have sex with men.
- Gaybar – gay bar. HBTQ – the Swedish acronym for LGBTQ.
- Krog – bar or restaurant. Utekrog – a summer terrace bar.
- En stor stark, tack – a large beer, please.
- Har du leg? – do you have ID?
- Garderob – cloakroom.
- Fika – coffee and something sweet. Kanelbulle – cinnamon bun.
- Skål! – cheers. Tack! – thanks. Hej då! – bye.
Summer only: by the water
From about April to September, Stockholm's scene moves outdoors. In late October all three are closed for the season, so check their websites in spring.
Men only: leather and cruise clubs
Closed:
Mälarpaviljongen, Lyckan i Tanto and Trädgården are seasonal, not closed.
Local colour: fika, kanelbulle and a Gamla Stan café
Swedish social life runs on fika, the coffee-and-pastry break, and a night out often starts with one. Chokladkoppen, at Stortorget 18 on the Old Town's main square, is a long-standing queer-friendly café with soup, sandwiches, cakes and outdoor seating in summer, and it stocks QX, Sweden's queer magazine, with its listings. Order a kanelbulle (cinnamon bun) or a cardamom bun, then walk down to The Secret Garden for the evening. For the next morning's fika, Södermalm's cafés around Mariatorget and Nytorget are near Side Track and SLM.
Practical tips
Stockholm Pride
Stockholm Pride, held every year since 1998, ran from 27 July to 1 August 2026. Pride House was at the Clarion Sign hotel and the Pride District filled the Slakthusområdet. The parade set off on Saturday 1 August at 13:00 from Norr Mälarstrand and followed a 4.5 km route that, new this year, passed Sergels torg before ending at Slussen; the organisers count around 50,000 spectators. The bars and clubs ran Pride programmes all week, and the parties went on until the finale on the Patricia on Sunday 2 August. Dates for 2027 had not been announced at the time of writing.
Still to come in 2026: QX lists Pink Christmas on 10–13 December, over the Lucia weekend.
