Stockholm is built on fourteen islands, and you feel the water everywhere: ferries sliding past the copper roofs of Gamla stan, the smell of cardamom buns drifting out of a café on Södermalm, swimmers jumping off the rocks at Långholmen on a light-filled June night that never gets fully dark. Sweden has some of the strongest LGBTQ+ rights in Europe, and that is partly why its scene can surprise visitors: there is no gay district, no gay sauna and only a handful of bars that are gay every night. Queer Stockholm lives instead in club nights, a riverboat on Sundays, a summer pavilion on the water, community spaces and one of Europe's big Prides each summer. Here is how to find it.

Legal in one line: sex between men has been legal in Sweden since 1944; registered partnership arrived in 1995 and marriage in 2009, and the Church of Sweden has married same-sex couples since that autumn. Discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity is banned, and since 1 July 2025 a new law has made changing legal gender simpler, from the age of 16.

The law, in a little more detail

    • 1944: sex between men and between women was decriminalised.
    • 1995: registered partnership for same-sex couples came into force.
    • 2009: the marriage law became gender-neutral, and the Church of Sweden, the former state church, began conducting same-sex weddings later that year.
    • 2025: the new gender recognition law, passed by the Riksdag in April 2024, took effect on 1 July 2025. A diagnosis of gender dysphoria is no longer needed: a certificate from a licensed healthcare professional is enough, the application goes to the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen), and the Tax Agency then issues a new personal identity number. The minimum age for a legal change fell from 18 to 16 (with guardians' consent under 18), and changing legal gender is now separate from gender-affirming care.

    Where queer Stockholm hangs out

    Södermalm

"Söder", the big island south of the Old Town, is the nearest thing Stockholm has to a gay neighbourhood: creative, a little scruffy, full of second-hand shops and cafés. The long-running gay bar Side Track (Wollmar Yxkullsgatan 7, Wednesday to Saturday evenings, with Swedish food) and the men-only leather club SLM (Wollmar Yxkullsgatan 18, members only, founded 1975) are on the same street near Mariatorget. Nearby, Bar Replik (Hornsgatan 70) is a cosy queer bar, and in Tantolunden park the outdoor bar and garden Lyckan i Tanto (Hornstulls strand 17) fills up on warm evenings. RFSL Stockholm's centre is on Alsnögatan, a short walk from Skanstull.

SLM is not a walk-in bar. The club is for members only, and membership has to be applied for in advance through its own website, slmstockholm.se; visitors suggest sorting it out a few days before you go and having proof of payment on your phone at the door. It is a fetish club for men, and the dress code is strict: nights are themed around leather, rubber, uniform, skinhead or sports gear, and Travel Gay gives the usual minimum as a black or white T-shirt, jeans and boots. Check the calendar for the theme before you dress. Travel Gay lists it as open on Wednesday evenings and on Friday and Saturday nights.

    Gamla stan

The cobbled Old Town is postcard Stockholm. On the main square, Café Chokladkoppen (Stortorget 18) has been voted gay café of the year by QX readers several times; make it your fika stop. Order a coffee or a hot chocolate and, if they are on the counter, a cinnamon or cardamom bun, then sit and watch the square. Down by the water, The Secret Garden (Kornhamnstorg 59) is a gay-mixed bar and restaurant in a 17th-century house, with DJs at weekends.

    Kungsholmen

The island west of the centre has the classic summer gay hangout, Mälarpaviljongen (Norr Mälarstrand, in front of no. 64), a restaurant and bar on floating decks on Lake Mälaren that is open daily from April to September only. Kungsholmen is also home to the two cruise clubs, Blue Vision (Fridhemsgatan 44) and Manhattan (Hantverkargatan 49), both with cabins and darkrooms.

    Nights out, briefly

On Sundays, the riverboat Patricia (Söder Mälarstrand, Kajplats 19) hosts its gay-mixed night with karaoke and two dance floors, from 18:00 until late. The rest of the week, much of the scene runs on rotating club nights and party collectives (drag nights, bear after-works, lesbian parties, fetish clubs) held in mainstream venues and in the Slakthus area near Globen. QX's online calendar is the place to check what is on this weekend. Our Stockholm bars guide has the full rundown, and the saunas guide explains why the city has no gay bathhouse.

Closed: Texas Sauna (2017) and the Rainbow Social Club gym and sauna are gone, whatever older guides say.

    Stockholm Pride 2026

Stockholm Pride has been held since 1998. In 2026 it ran from 27 July to 1 August. Pride House, with free talks, debates and culture, was at Clarion Sign by Norra Bantorget from 27 to 31 July, and the ticketed festival area, the Pride District (also called Pride Park), moved for the first time to Slakthusområdet, the old slaughterhouse district by Globen, from 30 July to 1 August. The parade left Norr Mälarstrand at 13:00 on Saturday 1 August and took about two hours to cover its 4.5 km through Sergels torg, Kungsträdgården and Skeppsbron to Slussen, with around 50,000 people expected. Police officers were not allowed to march in uniform this year. The 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing; watch stockholmpride.org.

Still to come in 2026: Pink Christmas, the queer Christmas weekend, is listed by QX for 10–13 December, around Lucia.

    Community and health

    • RFSL is Sweden's national LGBTQI rights organisation. RFSL Stockholm runs an LGBTQI centre at Alsnögatan 7 with a café, a youth group, a café for older men, a monthly trans café and a "Newcomers" group for refugees and new arrivals.
    • Testpoint, at the same address, offers free, anonymous drop-in rapid tests for HIV and syphilis.
    • Venhälsan at Södersjukhuset, the big hospital on Södermalm, is the clinic for men who have sex with men and for trans people. It offers PrEP and STI testing, has a drop-in on Mondays from 15:30 to 18:00, and says everyone is welcome, with or without a Swedish personal ID number. Phone lines open weekday mornings: +46 8 123 625 00.
    • PEP has to start as soon as possible, and within 72 hours: in clinic hours call Venhälsan, otherwise go to a hospital emergency department (akutmottagning) or call 1177, the healthcare advice line. Emergencies: 112.
    • Posithiva Gruppen (Östermalmsgatan 5) supports people living with HIV.
    • QX is Sweden's LGBTQ magazine and website, with news, a city map and an event calendar.

    Where to stay

All of these are on GayOut's list of gay-friendly hotels in Stockholm:

    • Rival, on Mariatorget, Södermalm: a design hotel with its own cinema, a short walk from Side Track and SLM.
    • Hotel Hellstens Malmgård, Södermalm: rooms in a historic manor house.
    • Scandic Gamla Stan: a small chain hotel inside the Old Town.
    • Berns, by Berzelii Park: a classic hotel attached to the historic Berns salons, a restaurant, bar and club venue.
    • Clarion Hotel Stockholm, at Skanstull on southern Södermalm, handy for RFSL and the Slakthus area.
    • Generator Stockholm and Rex Hotel: lower-priced options north of the centre.

For Pride week, book months ahead: hotels fill and prices climb.

    Summer: boats, rocks and swimming

From June to August, Stockholmers live outdoors. The water in the city is clean enough to swim in, and the lake and the Baltic meet right in the middle of town.

    • Långholmen, the green island by Hornstull (metro: Hornstull), has small beaches and swimming rocks. QX describes the rocks and hill on the west side as a gay sunbathing spot, with mixed beaches elsewhere on the island. In June, do what Stockholmers do: go down after dinner and slip into the water off the smooth granite rocks while the sky hangs in a pale blue twilight that barely darkens before midnight.
    • Ågesta, south of the city, is a mixed naturist beach: take the metro to Farsta strand, then bus 742 or 833 to Rödmossevägen. Kärsön, near Drottningholm, is another sunbathing spot QX lists (bus from Brommaplan).
    • The archipelago (skärgården) has thousands of islands. Public boats, run mainly by Waxholmsbolaget, leave from Strömkajen in the centre; the island hop to Vaxholm makes an easy half-day. The short Djurgården ferry from Slussen is part of the SL network. Timetables thin out sharply outside summer, so check before you go.

Nudity and the law: nude sunbathing is accepted at naturist beaches and tolerated at a few quiet rocks, but sex in public places is not. Exposing yourself in a way that offends others can be prosecuted in Sweden. Keep valuables to a minimum on the rocks, and swim sober: the water stays cold even in July.

    Food and fika

    • Fika is the daily coffee-and-something break, and Stockholmers take it seriously. Order a kanelbulle (cinnamon bun) or a kardemummabulle (cardamom bun); 4 October is National Cinnamon Bun Day.
    • Köttbullar: meatballs with creamy sauce, mashed potato, lingonberries and pickled cucumber, on the menu at every traditional krog.
    • Smörgåstårta: a "sandwich cake" of bread layered with prawns, egg, mayonnaise and smoked salmon, served at birthdays, graduations and, increasingly, weddings of every kind.
    • Surströmming: fermented Baltic herring, sold in bulging cans from late August. The smell is legendary, and not in a good way: think old socks left in a harbour. If a Swede offers you a taste, say yes once, in the open air, on a slice of thin bread with potato and onion. The can is under pressure, so open it outdoors, under water or with a cloth over it, and whatever you do, never open a tin in a hotel room: the smell clings, and neither your neighbours nor the hotel will thank you.
    • Alcohol: bars serve until late, but shops can only sell weak beer. Stronger drinks to take home come from the state monopoly, Systembolaget. Its shops are closed all day on Sundays; most open roughly 10:00–19:00 on weekdays and 10:00–15:00 on Saturdays, though hours vary by shop and some central branches stay open later, so check the store finder on systembolaget.se before a weekend.

    Practical tips

    • From Arlanda airport: the Arlanda Express train takes about 18 minutes to Stockholm Central; at the time of writing a standard adult single was around 340 kronor, and SL tickets are not valid. Commuter trains (pendeltåg) from Arlanda C are cheaper but take about 40 minutes, and adults pay an airport passage fee on top of the SL fare (157 kronor at the time of writing, about 200 kronor in all). The cheapest route is an SL bus to Märsta, then the commuter train on a normal SL ticket. Flygbussarna airport coaches go to Cityterminalen in about 45 minutes. Check current fares before you travel.
    • Getting around: the SL network (metro, buses, trams, commuter trains and some ferries) runs on one ticket system. Buy tickets in the SL app, or tap a contactless card or phone at the barriers. The metro runs through the night on Friday and Saturday nights, and night buses cover the rest of the week.
    • Cash: Sweden is close to cashless, and many bars and cafés no longer accept notes. Bring a card or phone payment (Apple Pay, Google Pay); contactless works almost everywhere. Locals pay each other with Swish, but it needs BankID, which only Swedish banks issue, so visitors can't use it: if a market stall or a friend asks you to "swisha", offer a card instead.
    • Apps: Grindr is the main app for men in Stockholm.
    • Safety: Stockholm is a safe city for LGBTQ+ visitors. Usual big-city care applies late at night around T-Centralen and Medborgarplatsen, and keep an eye on your drink in busy clubs.
    • Taxis: agree the price or use an app; Taxi Stockholm can be booked by app or on +46 8 15 00 00.

    A few words of Swedish

    • Hej! – hi. Tack! – thanks. Skål! – cheers.
    • Bög – gay man; flata – lesbian. Both are old slurs that the community has reclaimed, so leave them to locals until you know the room.
    • Hbtqi – the Swedish version of LGBTQI.
    • Regnbåge – rainbow.
    • Fika – coffee break; lagom – "just the right amount", the national ideal.
    • Badplats – swimming spot; skärgården – the archipelago.

Frequently asked questions

Is Stockholm gay-friendly?

Yes. Sweden decriminalised same-sex relations in 1944 and has had same-sex marriage since 2009, including church weddings, and its discrimination law covers sexual orientation and gender identity. In central Stockholm two men holding hands won't draw a second look.

Where is the gay area in Stockholm?

There is no gay village, but Södermalm comes closest: Side Track, the members-only SLM leather club, Bar Replik and RFSL Stockholm are all on the island. Gamla stan has the gay café Chokladkoppen and The Secret Garden, and Kungsholmen has the summer bar Mälarpaviljongen and the cruise clubs Blue Vision and Manhattan.

When is Stockholm Pride?

At the end of July and the start of August. In 2026 it ran from 27 July to 1 August, with free Pride House events at Clarion Sign, a ticketed Pride District at Slakthusområdet and the parade on Saturday 1 August from Norr Mälarstrand to Slussen. Dates for 2027 were still to be announced in October 2026.

Is there a gay sauna in Stockholm?

No. Stockholm has had no gay sauna since Texas Sauna closed in 2017. Men who want cruising go to the video clubs Blue Vision and Manhattan on Kungsholmen, or to SLM, the members-only leather club on Södermalm.

Where can I get PrEP or an HIV test in Stockholm?

Go to Venhälsan at Södersjukhuset for PrEP and STI tests; it has a Monday afternoon drop-in and sees visitors without a Swedish ID number. For a free, anonymous rapid HIV test, try Testpoint at RFSL Stockholm. Out of hours, PEP is available through a hospital emergency department or the 1177 advice line.
