Gay Cruising in Quito: The Honest 2026 Guide

Last verified: October 2026 · Compiled from venue checks and local and international sources from 2025–2026 · Report a change

At 2,850 metres, Quito does its cruising in the afternoon. The morning sun is fierce up here, but by two o'clock the clouds are rolling down off the Pichincha volcano, the air turns thin and cool, and the steam rooms of La Mariscal start to fill. Step in from a grey Andean afternoon to the hiss of steam, the hum of a jacuzzi and the low murmur of men unwinding after work, then walk out at eight into a cold night with the city lights spread along the valley. Quito's cruising scene is small, local and almost entirely indoors: a handful of men-only saunas, open from early afternoon to around 20:00, at about US$10 a visit. There are no dedicated cruise bars that we could verify in 2026, and the two parks some directories list are places we'd keep you away from.

Legal in one line: Ecuador decriminalised homosexuality in 1997, banned discrimination by sexual orientation in its 1998 constitution and has had marriage equality since a 2019 Constitutional Court ruling; saunas for men operate openly, while sex in public is not a crime under the penal code but can bring municipal sanctions, and society outside the scene is still fairly traditional.

The saunas: where Quito actually cruises

Quito's gay saunas are day venues, not all-night ones. Most open around 13:00 or 14:00 and close at about 20:00, so the scene peaks in the late afternoon and early evening, and especially at weekends. They're men only, cheap by international standards, and mostly local in crowd, with a few travellers mixed in.

Sauna Robles Spa · Robles E7-34 & Av. 6 de Diciembre, La Mariscal

The most central of the three, in La Mariscal, the nightlife district covered in our bars guide. Its website lists daily hours of 14:00 to 20:00 and an entry price of US$10, and visitors in 2025 described a modern, multi-floor sauna with a jacuzzi, dry sauna and steam room, a bar serving beer and two towels per guest. Weekday afternoons are quieter than weekends. House rules on the website: no smoking, no drugs, no entry if you're visibly drunk, and visits limited to four hours (a rule that dates from the pandemic and may have changed). Reviews in 2025 and 2026 are mixed on cleanliness and front-desk service but positive about the crowd. Phone: (02) 254 2998.

Sauna Jinetes · Berlín 147 & 9 de Octubre

Widely described as Quito's oldest gay sauna, open since 1999 according to misterb&b, and calling itself "the best sauna de ambiente in Quito". Its own website lists daily hours of 13:00 to 20:00, US$9 entry, and massages at US$15 for 30 minutes, US$20 for 45 and US$25 for an hour. Facilities include a jacuzzi, steam room (turco), dry sauna, video room, lockers, a bar and a solarium, spread over several floors with narrow stairs. Travel Gay reports reduced entry for 18 to 24-year-olds. One reviewer describes a mature crowd with plenty of bears; the building shows its age, and one 2025 review complained about maintenance, but 2026 reviews are positive. WhatsApp and phone: 096 948 4185.

Baco Spa · S. Quintero 158

A men's spa (spa para caballeros, in its own words) with sauna, steam, hydromassage, a video room, a bar and cabins. It's the highest-rated of the three on Google: reviews from late 2025 to May 2026 praise the cleanliness, the music and the welcome, and some say the heat in the steam and dry rooms is fierce, so drink water. Hours aren't published, and one visitor in March 2026 arrived at 20:00 to find it already closed, so call or message ahead: 099 858 2242.

Closed or unconfirmed: Sauna Azul (also called Club Azul), long listed around Mariscal Foch in La Mariscal, is still on several directories, but the addresses don't agree, there are no recent reviews anywhere, and GayCities marks it as permanently closed; we couldn't confirm it's operating. GayOut's own sauna guide reports La Isla (Avenida Atahualpa) and Mikonos as closed; misterb&b still lists La Isla, but with no reviews, and we couldn't confirm it either way. Older guides also mention the centre's adult cinemas, the Hollywood and the América, which press reports in 2015 and 2019 described as Quito's last, men-only porn cinemas; we found nothing to confirm either is still running in 2026, and the streets around them are not ones to wander after dark.

The parks: why we don't send you there

Some directories, including GayOut's own listings, still list Parque El Ejido and Parque La Carolina as cruising areas. We don't recommend either, and we won't give directions.

    • Robbery is the main risk. Visitors to La Carolina report robberies in the morning and at night, even when the park is busy, and in 2023 a regular told Expreso he now only goes in the morning. A visitor to El Ejido was told by police to leave because people there might rob or attack them. Local press has also reported phone theft and drug dealing in the city's big parks.
    • These are family parks. By day they're full of children's playgrounds, football, joggers and Sunday craft markets. Anything sexual near children is a serious crime, whatever the time.
    • Sanctions and cameras. Sex in public isn't a crime under Ecuador's penal code, but the municipality can impose administrative sanctions, police can intervene after complaints, and in March 2026 a viral video of a couple filmed in a car near Plaza Foch showed how quickly a phone camera can turn a private moment into a public one.

With saunas at around US$10, there's no reason to take the risk. Enjoy El Ejido for its Sunday art market and La Carolina for a jog or the botanical garden, in daylight.

The law, in a little more detail

Ecuador's Código Orgánico Integral Penal (COIP), in force since 2014, dropped the old offence covering sex in public. According to Ecuadorian press in 2024 and 2026, consensual sex between adults in a public place is therefore not a crime in itself, but:

    • municipalities can treat it as an administrative offence, with fines or other sanctions for misuse of public space;
    • anything involving a minor, or without consent, is a serious sexual crime;
    • recording and sharing someone's intimate images without consent is a crime under article 178 of the COIP, punishable by one to three years in prison. The same article protects you if your privacy is violated.

In practice, the law is not the main problem for a visitor. Robbery is.

Safety: drugged drinks and dating-app set-ups

This is the part of the guide that changed most in 2026.

    • Drugged-drink robberies are rising. Quito police recorded 297 robberies using drugs (scopolamine, ketamine or benzodiazepines in drinks or food) up to 25 August 2026, against 181 in the same period of 2025. The hotspots named by police include La Mariscal, especially Plaza Foch and Avenida 12 de Octubre, and the bars and cafés of Iñaquito. Of the 29 people reported missing after being drugged in Quito between January and July 2026, 28 were men, with a median age of 28. Never accept a drink you didn't see poured, and never leave yours unattended, in a bar or at the sauna bar.
    • Dating-app robbery gangs. In July 2026 Primicias reported that police were monitoring at least eight dating apps used by gangs in Quito: the match moves to WhatsApp, turns intensely affectionate, then the meeting place is changed or moved to your home, and accomplices turn up. The apps named were general ones such as Tinder, Bumble and Badoo, but the same method works on Grindr.
    • The police advice is sensible: meet first in a busy public place, get there and back on your own, don't share your address, hotel or routine early on, insist on a video call before meeting, share your live location with a friend, and walk away from anyone who asks for money or intimate photos.
    • If something goes wrong: call 911. If a friend seems drugged, stay with them, don't let them leave alone, and report it quickly, as the drugs are hard to detect after a day or two.

    Practical tips

    • Go in the afternoon. The saunas close around 20:00, so plan a sauna visit at 16:00 to 19:00, then dinner, then the bars and clubs later on (see our Quito bars guide).
    • Getting around: use Uber or InDrive, or ask the sauna to call you a taxi, and go door to door. Cabify stopped operating in Ecuador in March 2023, so ignore older guides that recommend it.
    • Money: Ecuador uses the US dollar. Bring small notes; US$100 bills are hard to break.
    • Valuables: lock your phone, wallet and passport in the locker, and leave what you don't need at the hotel.
    • Altitude: at 2,850 m, alcohol hits harder than at sea level, and you'll feel short of breath on your first days. In the steam and dry rooms, drink water and take breaks.
    • Health: bring your own condoms and lube to be sure. If a condom breaks, PEP must start within 72 hours: go to a hospital emergency room (emergencia).

    Pride and events

Quito Pride is held in late June. In 2026 it was on Saturday 27 June, with two marches: the main Orgullo Quito Oficial, which set off at 11:30 and headed north along Avenida Amazonas to Parque Bicentenario, and the alternative Orgullofff, which left at 09:00 from Avenida Eloy Alfaro and Amazonas and ended in La Mariscal. The saunas and clubs are at their busiest that weekend. GayOut also lists a Halloween party at Danzatoria (Kika) on 31 October 2026.

If you're here in late October, look out for the bakeries' colada morada, a thick, spiced purple drink of black corn and fruit, and guaguas de pan, bread dolls, sold for the Day of the Dead on 2 November. On a cold evening, though, nothing beats a canelazo: hot cinnamon, panela and naranjilla juice, spiked with aguardiente.

Frequently asked questions

Where is gay cruising in Quito?

Indoors, in the men's saunas, and mostly in the afternoon. Sauna Robles Spa (Robles E7-34 and Avenida 6 de Diciembre, La Mariscal) and Sauna Jinetes (Berlín 147) both open daily from about 13:00 or 14:00 to 20:00, and Baco Spa (S. Quintero 158) has sauna, steam, a video room and cabins. Quito has no dedicated cruise bars that we could verify in 2026.

Are El Ejido and La Carolina parks gay cruising spots?

Some directories list them, but we don't recommend either. Both are big, busy family parks by day, and visitors and local press report phone theft and robberies, especially in the evening and at night. Cruising there exposes you to robbery, to municipal sanctions and to being filmed. Use the saunas instead.

How much does a gay sauna cost in Quito?

Around US$9 to US$10. Sauna Jinetes lists US$9 entry, with reduced entry reported for 18 to 24-year-olds and massages from US$15, and Sauna Robles Spa lists US$10. Ecuador uses the US dollar; bring small bills and check prices before you go.

Is sex in public illegal in Ecuador?

Since the 2014 penal code (COIP), consensual sex between adults in a public place is not in itself a crime, but municipalities can impose administrative sanctions for misuse of public space, and anything involving minors or lack of consent is a serious crime. Filming and sharing someone's intimate images without consent is also a crime under article 178 of the COIP.

Is it safe to meet men from Grindr in Quito?

Take care. In 2026 Quito police reported gangs using dating apps to set up robberies, and robberies using drugged drinks rose to 297 cases by late August, many around La Mariscal and Iñaquito. Meet first in a busy public place, get there on your own, don't share your hotel or address early, never leave a drink unattended, and share your location with a friend.
