Dinner at ten, a previa on a friend's balcony at midnight, a club that doesn't fill until two, and a taxi home with the sun coming up over the jacarandas: Buenos Aires runs on its own clock. It's a huge, loud, beautiful city of tango halls, bookshops and corner cafés, where everyone has an opinion on football, politics and your love life. For gay travellers it has been the big draw of South America for years, and the law is still on your side. What's changed is the scene itself. Some of the old bars have gone, and the energy has moved to weekly parties that hop between venues and are announced on Instagram. The city is also enormous, so this guide is organised by barrio: pick a base, plan your nights by neighbourhood, and use taxis or apps between them.
Legal in one line: Argentina legalised same-sex marriage in 2010, the first country in Latin America to do so, and its 2012 Gender Identity Law lets people change their legal gender without medical or court requirements. Under President Milei the government closed the anti-discrimination institute INADI (made official in August 2024) and, in February 2025, decreed a ban on gender-affirming hormones and surgery for under-18s; a federal appeals court provisionally suspended that decree in 2026 while the case continues.
Know the clock: bars get going after 11 p.m. and clubs fill around 2–3 a.m. Weeknight parties are a big part of the scene, so a Wednesday or Thursday can be better than a Saturday. Many parties change venue or date, so check the organiser's Instagram on the day.
Palermo: bars, video bars and party nights
Palermo, and especially Palermo Soho and Palermo Hollywood, is where most visitors stay and where the densest cluster of LGBTQ+ bars and party nights is. Línea D of the Subte stops at Plaza Italia and Palermo.
Peuteo · Gurruchaga 1867, Palermo Soho
The easiest first stop: a video bar with drag shows, karaoke and Drag Race viewing nights. Time Out describes it as "a gay bar but also hetero-friendly, nobody is left out". It has opened Wednesday to Sunday and on nights before public holidays, 18:00 to 03:00. A good pre-club bar.

Work Bar · Gurruchaga 1832, Palermo Soho
A small, industrial-style bar a few doors from Peuteo, with electronic music and a mostly local crowd. It was reported open Thursday to Sunday from 21:00, busiest after midnight. Check its social media before going.
Maricafé · Honduras 4096, Palermo
A café, bakery and LGBTQ+ bookshop with a cultural programme: coffee and books by day, drinks and the odd viewing party in the evening.

Club 69 · Niceto Club, Av. Cnel. Niceto Vega 5510, Palermo Hollywood
The Thursday-night institution: house, nu-disco and tech house, with themed shows, costumed dancers and drag. Time Out says tickets often sell out in advance, so buy online. Don't arrive before 1 a.m.
Rheo and Human · Crobar, Av. Cnel. Marcelino E. Freyre, Palermo
Crobar, a big club under the railway arches by the Palermo parks, hosts the city's large gay weekend parties: Rheo has run on Saturdays with pop, dance and electro rooms for a crowd mostly in its 20s and 30s, and Human nights have run on Fridays. Dates move, so check both parties' Instagram.

Fiesta Jolie · Club Aráoz, Aráoz 2424, Palermo
The midweek pop party, on Wednesdays from 23:00 to 04:00, 18+, and listed by Time Out as free entry. Expect a young, packed, mixed LGBTQ+ crowd.
Fiesta Plop · Teatro Vorterix, Av. Federico Lacroze 3455, Colegiales
A pop party with a long dance show dedicated to one diva per night and a troupe of dancers of every body type and gender expression. It has run on Fridays, with sister party Fiesta Puerca (pop and cumbia) on Saturdays, plus extra editions around Pride. Venue and format can change, so check before you go.

Almagro and Villa Crespo: the big club and the cultural spaces
These neighbouring, more residential barrios west of the centre hold the city's best-known gay club, two of its saunas and its most interesting queer cultural spaces.
Amerika · Gascón 1040, Almagro
The landmark gay club: three dance floors with a capacity of nearly 1,900, electronic music on one floor and Latin on another, open from Thursday or Friday to Sunday until 6–7 a.m. It has been closed several times over the years after neighbours' noise complaints, and reopened in 2006 with the help of the Comunidad Homosexual Argentina. Local queer media were still covering its parties in late 2025. Themed nights have included foam and bear parties; expect queues after 2 a.m.

Feliza · Av. Córdoba 3271
A queer social club in an old house with a patio, a bar, drag nights, karaoke, film, workshops and parties across several rooms. Time Out lists it Wednesday to Sunday, 20:00 to 05:00, first come, first served. A warm, unpretentious place to meet locals.
Casa Brandon · Luis María Drago 236, Villa Crespo
An LGBTIQ+ cultural centre with live music, film, poetry, talks and exhibitions. There's no fixed schedule, so check its social media for what's on.

Sitges · Av. Córdoba 4119
A long-running bar and club with shows, karaoke and dancing, cheap drinks and a mostly local male crowd, busiest late on weekends.
Also in the area: La Tribu Mostra (Lambaré 873, Almagro), a queer bar with games, film, theatre and live music from Thursday to Sunday; and the queer milonga La Marshall, which has run on Wednesday evenings at Yatay 961 with a class before the dancing.
Recoleta, Barrio Norte and Retiro: the old guard
The elegant north of the centre is where the older bars and some of the cruise venues sit, around Avenida Santa Fe and Avenida Callao.

Contramano · Rodríguez Peña 1082, Recoleta
Open since 1984, Contramano is a small club for an older crowd (30s, 40s and up) and a favourite with bears, with pop and Latin music from midnight on Friday to Sunday nights.
KM 0 and Loka · Av. Santa Fe at Azcuénaga, Barrio Norte
A late-night show bar with drag queens and go-go dancers that opens around midnight and keeps going until about 6 a.m., running under different party names on different nights. It's near the Pueyrredón and Santa Fe stations.

Puticlú · Marcelo T. de Alvear 980, Retiro
A self-declared bar marica ("queer bar", in reclaimed slang), with a name and attitude to match. Time Out lists it Tuesday to Sunday from 21:00.
A stop for history: the Línea H station at Avenida Santa Fe and Pueyrredón is named after Carlos Jáuregui, the human-rights and sexual-diversity activist who was a driving force behind the first Marcha del Orgullo in 1992, and has an artwork by Daniel Arzola.
San Telmo, Monserrat and the centre: cafés and tango
The cobbled south of the centre is for daytime and early evening: the Sunday antiques fair on Defensa, cafés, and queer tango.

Pride Café
Time Out calls it Argentina's first daytime gay bar, and it has been a San Telmo fixture at Balcarce 869 since 2004, known for its dulce de leche brownies. Time Out reported in 2025 that it was moving to Avenida de Mayo, so check its Instagram for the current address before you go.
La Greco · Perú 269, Monserrat
A cultural space and bar with food all day, and shows, DJs and karaoke at night. Time Out lists entry as free.

Queer tango
Buenos Aires has a strong queer tango (tango queer or tango cuir) scene, where anyone leads and anyone follows. The Tango Queer milonga has run on Tuesdays at Perú 571 in San Telmo with a beginners' class at 20:00, then free dancing and a show. Other names to look for are Tango Cuir Studio and La Marshall (see Almagro above). Times change from season to season, so confirm before going.
Also in the area: YÖBLA.BAR (Bolívar 986, San Telmo), a community bar with vinyl sets and daytime "coffee raves", and the bear social club Club de Osos de Buenos Aires (Humberto 1º 1664), founded in 1997.
For women
Fiesta Matilda, a party for lesbians and their friends, has been held at Glam on irregular dates. Feliza, Casa Brandon and La Greco are all mixed spaces where queer women are very much part of the crowd.

Glam: between Palermo and Recoleta
Glam · José A. Cabrera 3046
A gay club in a converted old house with several rooms, one for electronic music and one for pop and Latin, a darkroom and cheap drinks. It's been listed open Thursday to Sunday from midnight to about 6:30 a.m. and draws a young crowd. It sits on the edge of Palermo and Recoleta, a short taxi from either.
Gone: Flux Bar in the centre did not survive the pandemic and has closed for good. Older guides may still list it.

Saunas and cruise bars, briefly
Buenos Aires has the biggest sauna scene in Argentina, mostly in Almagro and around Avenida Callao. The main names are HomoSapiens (Gascón 956, Almagro, a few blocks from Amerika, with dry and steam rooms and a bar), Madison Club de Hombres (Av. Medrano 1047, Almagro) and A Full (Viamonte 1770, Balvanera). Zoom (José Evaristo Uriburu 1018, Recoleta) is a men's darkroom bar whose format changes, so check before going. Bring ID, use the locker and don't take photos. Prices in pesos rise quickly, so ask at the door. For full details, see our Buenos Aires cruising guide.
Marcha del Orgullo 2026
Buenos Aires Pride, the Marcha del Orgullo LGBTIQ+, is held on the first Saturday of November, and the 2026 march is on Saturday 7 November. In September the city government asked organisers to move it to 21 November because of the visit of Pope Leo XIV planned for 8 to 11 November. The organising committee refused, and both sides agreed to keep the original date. The march traditionally gathers at Plaza de Mayo and moves along Avenida de Mayo to Congreso, with a stage, speeches and a party into the night. The first march was held in 1992. Expect the clubs' biggest parties of the year that weekend, and book accommodation early. With the papal visit the following days, expect heavy security and traffic restrictions in the centre.

Where to stay
For nightlife, stay in Palermo (Soho or Hollywood); for grand old buildings and quieter streets, Recoleta; for character and the Sunday fair, San Telmo, though it's a taxi ride from most clubs. Nomadic Boys, updated in September 2026, recommends among others:
- Home Hotel, Palermo Hollywood: a garden and pool, a spa and a popular weekend brunch, close to the Palermo bars.
- Le Petit Palais, Palermo: a gay-owned B&B with home-made breakfasts.
- Mio Buenos Aires, Recoleta: a boutique hotel with a spa, within walking distance of the cemetery.
- Alvear Palace Hotel, Recoleta, and Faena, Puerto Madero: the classic five-star and the design-led splurge.
- LGY Gay Bed & Breakfast, San Telmo: a budget option for gay men, with a rooftop terrace and hot tub.
- Phones first. Phone snatching is the most common problem for visitors, including by thieves on motorbikes, the motochorros. Don't walk along the kerb looking at your phone, and step into a doorway to check directions.
- Drinks. Buy your own, watch it being poured and don't leave it unattended. If you feel suddenly much drunker than you should, tell a friend and the bar staff at once.
- Dates and apps. Grindr and other apps are widely used. Meet somewhere public first, tell a friend where you're going and don't bring more cash or cards than you need.
- Getting home. Request an app car or a registered radio taxi from a well-lit spot, especially in Almagro, Villa Crespo and the centre late at night. La Boca is best avoided after dark.
- Getting around: the Subte (metro) and buses use the rechargeable SUBE card. The Subte stops running before the clubs even open, so nights out mean taxis or apps.
- Money: Argentina lifted most currency controls in 2025, and the gap between the official rate and the informal dólar blue has narrowed a lot. Payments on foreign credit cards are settled at the market rate, so a card is usually good value; keep some pesos for kiosks, small bars and saunas. Prices change fast with inflation, so the peso amounts in any guide date quickly.
- Health: if a condom breaks, PEP should start within 72 hours; go to the emergency department (guardia) of a public hospital.
- vos: "you". Porteños say vos sos rather than tú eres, and pronounce "ll" and "y" as "sh": calle sounds like "cashe".
- che: "hey, mate". Used constantly.
- boliche: nightclub. Previa: pre-drinks at home before going out.
- re: "very", stuck in front of anything: re lindo, really lovely.
- chongo: a masculine guy, or a casual hook-up, in gay slang.
- boludo: "idiot" between friends, an insult from strangers. Hear it before you use it.
- marica and puto: insults that the community has reclaimed (hence Puticlú). Fine in a queer bar, not from you to a stranger.

Eat and drink like a porteño
Breakfast is a coffee and medialunas (small, sweet croissants). Lunch on the run is a choripán, sausage in bread with chimichurri. Dinner is at a parrilla (steakhouse) no earlier than 9:30 p.m.; order vacío or entraña and a bottle of Malbec, and go to a bodegón, the old-school neighbourhood canteen, for huge plates of milanesa. Dulce de leche is in everything, ice cream included, and the city's heladerías stay open late. The national party drink is fernet con coca, bitter and fizzy, poured at every previa. And if someone offers you mate, take the gourd, drink it all, and only say gracias when you don't want another round.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the gay area of Buenos Aires?
There's no single gay district. Palermo has the most bars and party nights, Almagro and Villa Crespo have Amerika, Feliza, Casa Brandon and two of the main saunas, Recoleta and Retiro keep the older bars, and San Telmo has the daytime cafés and queer tango. Plan your nights by barrio and take a taxi or app between them.
What are the main gay clubs in Buenos Aires?
Amerika in Almagro and Glam on the Palermo–Recoleta border are the long-running gay clubs. Most of the energy is in weekly parties: Fiesta Jolie on Wednesdays, Club 69 at Niceto Club on Thursdays, Fiesta Plop at Teatro Vorterix on Fridays and Rheo or Human at Crobar at weekends. Clubs fill around 2 a.m., so check each party's Instagram before you go.

When is Buenos Aires Pride 2026?
The Marcha del Orgullo is on Saturday 7 November 2026. The city government asked organisers to move it because of the papal visit planned for 8 to 11 November, but they kept the original date. The march traditionally runs along Avenida de Mayo between Plaza de Mayo and Congreso.
Is Buenos Aires safe for gay travellers?
Yes, in the barrios you'll go out in, and two men holding hands in Palermo or San Telmo won't turn heads. The main risks are ordinary big-city ones: phone snatching on the street, unattended drinks and walking home at dawn. Keep your phone out of sight, watch your glass and take a registered taxi or app car after the clubs.

Has gay and trans law changed under Milei?
Same-sex marriage, legal since 2010, is untouched. The government closed the anti-discrimination institute INADI in 2024, and a February 2025 decree banned hormone treatment and surgery for under-18s under the 2012 Gender Identity Law. A federal appeals court provisionally suspended that decree in 2026, and the case is still in the courts.
