Gay Saunas in Montevideo: The Honest 2026 Guide

Last verified: October 2026 · Compiled from venue checks and local and international sources from 2025–2026 · Report a change

Montevideo moves at the pace of a mate gourd passed between friends: a thermos tucked under one arm, the Rambla running along the River Plate, couples and joggers stopping to watch the sun drop into water so wide it looks like the sea. Lunch is a chivito or a grill at the Mercado del Puerto with a glass of medio y medio; on some weekend evenings the candombe drums roll through Barrio Sur and Palermo. The gay scene is small, friendly and mixed into the rest of the city rather than packed into one street. Saunas are a modest part of it: there are two, both men-only, both in the central grid, one larger and busier, one older and more intimate. Here is what each is really like in 2026.

Legal in one line: Uruguay decriminalised sex between men in 1934, introduced civil unions in 2008, legalised same-sex marriage in 2013 (Law 19.075) and passed the Comprehensive Law for Trans People in 2018 (Law 19.684). Saunas are legal private venues for adults.

The two saunas

Toronto Sauna · Tacuarembó 1531, Cordón

The bigger and better-known of the two, on the edge of Centro in Cordón. Its own website describes a men-only venue of about 1,200 m² that has been running for more than 13 years, with a sauna, a jacuzzi, steam (vapor), a bar serving drinks and snacks, private cabins with massage tables, massage, a "Cinema X" room and a cruising area. Other listings also mention a dark room, a solarium and a salt room. Showers are compulsory before you use the facilities.

Reviews from 2026 mostly praise how clean it is, and one regular noted fresh paint and new soap dispensers in February. The recurring complaint is the price: several visitors called it expensive, and some said it was nearly empty when they went. Others found it lively, with plenty of tourists.

    • Price: visitors in January and March 2026 paid 700 Uruguayan pesos. Several reviewers say it is cash only, and one asked for receipts to be issued; massage prices aren't posted, so ask first.
    • Hours: it opens at 15:00. Listings disagree on closing time: GayOut gives 22:00 Monday to Thursday and midnight Friday to Sunday; Travel Gay gives 22:00 most days and 23:00 on Friday and Saturday. Call +598 2403 1806, message on WhatsApp (+598 9553 0956) or check Instagram @toronto_sauna.
    • When to go: a visitor counted about 40 men on a Sunday afternoon in January 2026, busiest from 18:00 to 19:00, and about 15 on a Wednesday.

Sauna Horus · Julio Herrera y Obes 1240, Centro

The smaller one, a few blocks from Plaza Independencia and Avenida 18 de Julio. It's spread over several levels, with dry and wet saunas, a cruise cellar with private rooms and open cubicles, a small bar and a cinema room. Towels, robes, slippers and lockers are included.

Opinions are split. Some regulars call it clean, friendly and good value, with a mixed, mostly older local crowd. Others describe it as dated and cramped, with poor ventilation and tired seating. A February 2026 reviewer reported that the steam room, sauna and showers were not working and that the showers were being taken out, apparently for works. Later reviews (May 2026) are better, but check that the heat is on before you pay.

    • Price: a visitor paid 500 pesos in January 2026, cash only.
    • Hours: GayOut and Wanderlog give 15:00–21:00 Monday to Thursday and 15:00–22:00 Friday to Sunday; older listings mention later weekend hours. Call +598 2902 2376 to check.
    • When to go: weekends. The January 2026 visitor counted about 30 men on a Saturday and far fewer on a Tuesday.

Centro after dark. Both saunas sit in the central grid, which is busy by day but empties out late at night. Arrive and leave by taxi or Uber after dark rather than walking the quiet side streets, and keep your phone and wallet in your locker.

    Beyond the saunas

GayOut also lists Dehiok, a men-only cruising bar in Ciudad Vieja (25 de Mayo 699, corner of Juncal) with cabins and dark areas that is said to fill up very late. We couldn't confirm its 2026 hours from an independent source, so call ahead. For outdoor spots, see our Montevideo cruising guide, and remember that sex in public can still be treated as an offence against public decency in Uruguay; the saunas are the safer choice.

    Practical tips

    • Cash: both saunas are reported to be cash only. Bring Uruguayan pesos in smaller notes for entry and the bar.
    • Getting there: both are central. City buses need an STM card; at night, use a taxi or Uber.
    • Check first: hours vary between listings, and Horus has had broken facilities at times. A quick call or WhatsApp saves a wasted trip.
    • Apps: Grindr is widely used in Uruguay.
    • Health: if a condom breaks, PEP must be started within 72 hours, so go to a hospital emergency department (emergencia) quickly.
    • Before or after: for the city's bars and maricotecas (gay dance clubs), see our Montevideo bars guide.

Pride: the Marcha por la Diversidad

September is Montevideo's Month of Sexual Diversity, and it ends with the Marcha por la Diversidad on the last Friday of the month. The 2026 march was on Friday 25 September, starting at Plaza Cagancha on Avenida 18 de Julio in the early evening (the city gave 19:00, la diaria 18:00) and ending at Plaza 1° de Mayo in front of the Legislative Palace. Its slogan was "Vivir con dignidad, existir con orgullo" ("live with dignity, exist with pride"), and the edition was dedicated to Luis Magallanes, the actor and teacher known as Dulce Polly. La diaria describes the march as one of the largest street mobilisations in the country. The 2027 date hasn't been announced yet; expect late September and check the organisers' channels.

Frequently asked questions

Are there gay saunas in Montevideo?

Yes, two, both men-only and both central. Toronto Sauna, at Tacuarembó 1531 in Cordón, is the bigger one, with a sauna, steam, jacuzzi, bar, private cabins, massage, an X-rated cinema and a cruising area. Sauna Horus, at Julio Herrera y Obes 1240 in Centro, is smaller and older, with dry and wet saunas, a cruise cellar with cabins, a small bar and a cinema room.

How much does a gay sauna cost in Montevideo?

Visitors in early 2026 reported paying 700 Uruguayan pesos at Toronto Sauna and 500 pesos at Sauna Horus. Neither publishes a price list, and recent reviewers say both take cash only, so bring pesos and ask at the door, as prices can change.

When are Montevideo's gay saunas busiest?

Weekends, from late afternoon into the evening. A visitor to Toronto counted about 40 men on a Sunday in January 2026, busiest between 18:00 and 19:00, but only around 15 on a Wednesday. At Horus, the same visitor found about 30 men on a Saturday and a much quieter Tuesday. Weekday afternoons can be very slow at both.

Is Montevideo gay-friendly?

Yes. Uruguay decriminalised sex between men in 1934, legalised same-sex marriage in 2013 and passed a comprehensive law for trans people in 2018. Montevideo is relaxed and welcoming, and its Marcha por la Diversidad is one of the biggest street mobilisations in the country.

When is Montevideo Pride?

The Marcha por la Diversidad is held on the last Friday of September. In 2026 it took place on Friday 25 September, from Plaza Cagancha on Avenida 18 de Julio to Plaza 1° de Mayo in front of the Legislative Palace, under the slogan Vivir con dignidad, existir con orgullo.
