Bermuda isn't like a big city. This 21-square-mile British Overseas Territory of pastel cottages and pink-sand beaches has no dedicated gay bars, clubs, or saunas. Instead, it has OUTBermuda, the island's LGBTQ+ charity, and one week a year when Hamilton turns rainbow.
The legal situation is better than most of the Caribbean: same-sex relations have been legal since 1994, domestic partnerships are recognized, and workplace discrimination protections exist. The one sticking point: after years of legal wrangling, the Privy Council upheld the marriage ban in 2022, so partnerships are the ceiling. Day to day, Bermuda is polite, conservative, and safe. Public affection draws little more than a glance, and tourism is treated as sacred.
The Gay Bar Is Your Phone
With no physical venues, the apps are Bermuda's gay bar. Grindr and Tinder are active and how visitors meet locals. But know the dynamic before you swipe: many Bermudian profiles are blank or photo-less. On an island of 64,000 where everyone knows everyone's cousin, discretion is a habit, not a red flag. A blank profile that messages you politely is normal here; a face photo often arrives only after some conversation. The grids are busiest in and around Hamilton and light up when cruise ships are in. Expect a quieter screen out in the parishes.
Bermuda Pride, organized by OUTBermuda since the first march in 2019, lands on the first weekend of July. The main parade has marched on and around July 4th weekend, gathering in Victoria Park and looping through Hamilton before returning for festivities and an evening concert. A Pride of a few hundred people on a small island doesn't feel small; it feels like the world's biggest neighborhood block party. Aunties wave from balconies, half the island turns up to cheer, and visitors get folded in like family within minutes. If you can time your trip to it, do.
Where the Community Drinks
Casey's Lounge on Queen Street is the first name locals give. Don't look for a rainbow flag; there isn't one. It's a no-frills Hamilton institution. Order a Rum Swizzle, take a seat, start a conversation, and someone will tell you where this weekend's private party is within ten minutes. That's how the scene works here: word of mouth over signage.
Beyond Casey's, the weekly anchor is Friday night. In summer, the Hamilton Princess hosts its Marina Nights happy hour. You'll find DJs, harbor views, and the island's most cosmopolitan crowd, queer folks comfortably among them. Later, the community drifts to Hamilton's mixed late-night spots: Cafe Cairo on Front Street for dancing into the small hours, or Bermuda Bistro at the Beach for the anything-goes Front Street crowd. None are gay venues; all are where gay Bermuda actually goes out.
Beaches — No Gay Beach, But Quieter Coves
There is no designated gay beach on Bermuda. Horseshoe Bay is the famous (and busiest) strand. But walk east along the sand, and the small coves toward Chaplin Bay and Stonehole Bay are more secluded, more relaxed, and where couples of every kind spread their towels away from the tour-bus crowds. Same pink sand, a fraction of the audience. Nude or topless sunbathing is illegal island-wide, so keep it PG.
Arriving by Cruise Ship?
Most cruise visitors dock at the Royal Naval Dockyard, on the island's far western tip. It's charming, but there's no scene beyond the ship itself (though the apps light up when boats are in). To reach Hamilton, take the ferry. The fast catamaran crosses the Great Sound in about 20 minutes and drops you in the middle of town, versus nearly an hour winding along on the bus. Casey's, Front Street, and the Princess are all within a ten-minute walk of the ferry terminal — an easy, self-contained shore day.
Practical Notes
Getting around: Visitors can't rent cars. Scooters are the classic option and the classic way to get hurt; the safer plays are the Hitch app (Bermuda's local taxi-hailing app — download it before you land) or renting a Twizy, the two-seat electric mini-car that has taken over the tourist trade. Pink public buses and ferries cover the rest.
Money: The Bermudian dollar is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar and both spend interchangeably. That makes it painless to pay and painful to look at the bill. Bermuda is one of the most expensive destinations on earth. Expect cocktails around $15-20, and a casual dinner for two to clear $150 without trying. Budget accordingly and treat happy hours as a survival strategy, not a suggestion.
Dress code: Don't be surprised to see a man walk into a fine restaurant in a blazer, tie, crisp Bermuda shorts, and knee-high socks. That is formal wear here, and it's completely part of the local charm. Pack one smart-casual outfit; shorts at dinner are not just tolerated, they're traditional.
Book early: The island's room count is small, and Pride weekend collides with July 4th holiday traffic. Reserve months ahead.
