Tacoma, roughly 25 minutes south, has its own smaller scene. Kent is car-dependent, though downtown is walkable and the Kent Sounder commuter-rail station connects directly to Seattle and Tacoma. King County Metro buses and the RapidRide network link the city to the regional light-rail system, making a car-free trip to Seattle's Capitol Hill feasible. Rideshare is widely available, and Sea-Tac International Airport is only about 15 minutes away.

Safety and Legal Status

Washington is one of the most LGBTQ+-protective states in the country: same-sex marriage has been legal since 2012, discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity has been banned in employment, housing and public accommodation since 2006, and conversion therapy for minors is prohibited. Kent is a diverse, generally safe suburb; ordinary big-metro awareness applies, especially late at night in the industrial valley, but there are no LGBTQ+-specific safety concerns.
