Manteo, North Carolina: The Honest 2026 LGBTQ+ Guide

The honest summary: Manteo is a waterfront town of 1,602 people (2020 census) on Roanoke Island, the county seat of Dare County and the quiet, historic end of the Outer Banks. It has no gay bar, gay club or gay sauna, and neither do Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills or Kitty Hawk across the causeway. What it does have is a real queer anchor: OBX PrideFest, a free festival that OBX Pride, Inc. has run on the Manteo waterfront every September since 2011. Come for the beaches, the Lost Colony story and a calm small-town base. If you want gay nightlife, the nearest bars are in Norfolk, Virginia, about two hours north.

Legal in one line: same-sex marriage has been legal in North Carolina since 10 October 2014, but the state has no law protecting LGBTQ+ people from discrimination in hotels, shops or restaurants, and no Outer Banks town or Dare County has passed a local ordinance of its own.

What the scene looks like now

We searched Travel Gay-style directories, Qnotes (the Carolinas' LGBTQ+ paper), the Outer Banks Voice, the Outer Banks visitors bureau and Google Maps for Manteo, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Wanchese and Duck. Searches for "gay bar" return ordinary seafood bars and breweries. Nothing on the island or the beach towns presents itself as a gay venue.

What that means in practice:

- The queer calendar is one long weekend in September (see Pride below). For the rest of the year, gay life here is mostly private: house parties, friends, and the dating apps, which are busier in summer when the rental houses fill.
- A handful of mainstream businesses openly back Pride. Old Tom's Beer, Wine & Provisions on the Manteo waterfront hosted the 2026 Pride evening party, and the Outer Banks visitors bureau describes Swells 'a Brewing in Kill Devil Hills as an LGBTQ-affirming brewery that hosted the 2025 kick-off. They're good places to start a conversation, but they aren't gay bars, so we don't list them as such.
- Downtown Manteo itself is compact and walkable: the boardwalk, Queen Elizabeth Avenue, galleries, and a few restaurants and bars facing Shallowbag Bay. The beach towns are a 15 to 25 minute drive east.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

- The Elizabethan Inn on US-64 is now Hotel Manteo, Trademark Collection by Wyndham, at the same address (814 US-64).
- Full Moon Cafe & Brewery at 208 Queen Elizabeth Avenue changed hands and names; the address now trades as Lost Colony Tavern.
- The 1587 restaurant at the Tranquil House Inn changed with the inn's sale to Carolina Retreats; the space now lists as 1587 Restaurant & Lounge.
- J.J. Brewbaker's in Nags Head ran a Sunday drag brunch in 2017 until the landlord objected; it no longer operates.
- Coquina Beach on Bodie Island is remembered locally as a gay beach from the 1970s to the early 2000s. That was a long time ago, and we found no current source for it.
- Earlier versions of this page named a "Gravity" gay club in Wilmington (Gravity is a record store), an "Angelo's Italian Restaurant" in Manteo (we couldn't find it), and the NC Seafood Festival as a Manteo event (it's in Morehead City). Ignore those claims.

Pride: OBX PrideFest

OBX PrideFest is organized by OBX Pride, Inc., a Manteo nonprofit founded in 2011. Its mission covers anti-discrimination work, LGBTQ-friendly businesses and youth suicide prevention, and over the years it has backed school gay-straight alliances and a memorial scholarship. The main festival is free, family-friendly and held at Roanoke Island Festival Park on the downtown waterfront.

Recent dates, from the Outer Banks Voice, Qnotes and the festival park:

- 2024: Saturday 14 September, 11:00 to 17:00, at the start of a week of events.
- 2025 (14th year): Saturday 13 September, 12:00 to 18:00, with a kick-off at Swells 'a Brewing, a drag brunch at Secret Island Tavern and a beach party at the Bonnett Street beach access in Nags Head.
- 2026 (15th year): 11 to 13 September. The weekend had a sunset cruise from Pirate's Cove marina, the festival on Saturday 12 September with drag headliner Gigi Monroe, an evening party at Old Tom's, a DJ night at Basnight's Lone Cedar Cafe in Nags Head and a drag brunch at Jennette's Pier.

The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing. Every recent edition has fallen in the middle of September, so if you're planning ahead, watch obxpridefest.com from early summer. In 2026 the organizers said on their fundraising page that they had lost their large corporate sponsors, so the festival relies more on local donations than it used to.

Health and support

The Dare County Department of Health and Human Services runs free HIV, hepatitis and STI testing at 109 Exeter Street in Manteo, and it offers PrEP, including for people without insurance. Appointments are required, Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 (252-475-5003). We found no PFLAG chapter or LGBTQ+ center on the Outer Banks; OBX Pride is the local organization.

Where to stay

Manteo has small inns and motels rather than resorts, and most are within walking distance of the waterfront. The ones we list are mainstream businesses, not gay hotels, and we found none on the Outer Banks that identifies as LGBTQ-owned. Downtown options include the Tranquil House Inn on the water, The Pearl Hotel on Old Tom Street, the White Doe Inn and Cameron House Next Door on Sir Walter Raleigh Street, and The Roanoke Island Inn on Fernando Street. Along US-64 there are the Burrus House Inn Waterfront Suites, the Scarborough Inn, Island Guesthouse & Motel, Dare Haven Motel and Hotel Manteo. For an oceanfront room, the beach towns are 15 minutes away; we list Mia's Boutique Hotel in Nags Head. The First Colony Inn, a 1932 historic inn often linked to Manteo, is actually in Nags Head.

Summer rates are high and weekends sell out, especially in June, July and August. Prices drop in May and from mid-September, which happens to be Pride season.

What to do

- The Lost Colony: the outdoor drama about the 1587 English colony has played at the Waterside Theatre in Fort Raleigh National Historic Site since 1937. The 2026 season ran from 4 June to 22 August.
- Roanoke Island Festival Park: a state historic site on the waterfront with the Elizabeth II, a replica 16th-century ship, an American Indian town and the settlement site. It's also where PrideFest happens.
- The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is at 374 Airport Road, a few minutes from downtown.
- The Elizabethan Gardens sit next to Fort Raleigh at the north end of the island.
- Beaches: the Atlantic beaches at Nags Head are about 15 minutes away. Bodie Island Lighthouse is about 20 minutes south, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse about an hour and a quarter, and the wild horses of Corolla about an hour north.
- Downtown Manteo holds First Friday evenings from spring to autumn, Dare Days in early June, the New World Festival of the Arts in August and a tree lighting on the first Friday of December.

Note that North Carolina has no legal nude beach, including on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Getting there and around

Most visitors drive. The nearest airport with airline service is Norfolk International (ORF) in Virginia, about 98 miles and two hours north. Raleigh-Durham (RDU) is about three and a quarter hours. Dare County Regional Airport (MQI), a mile from downtown Manteo, handles private and charter planes only. There's no useful public transport, so you'll want a car or a bike for anything beyond downtown.

Safety

We found no reports of attacks on LGBTQ+ visitors in Manteo or the Outer Banks in 2025 or 2026. Same-sex couples on the downtown waterfront and the beaches rarely draw attention, and the September festival is a visible, family-friendly event in the middle of town. Dare County is more conservative than the Triangle or Asheville, though, and businesses aren't legally barred from discriminating, so read the room in smaller places. State law has also moved against trans people since 2023: a ban on gender-affirming care for minors, a school sports ban and, in 2025, House Bill 805, which writes a two-sex definition into state law. Hurricane season runs from June to November and peaks from August to October, so check the forecast before a September Pride trip.

Nearest gay bars

- Norfolk, Virginia (about 2 hours): The Wave in Ghent and MJ's Tavern on Granby Street. The Hershee Bar closed in 2018.
- Greenville, North Carolina (about 2 hours): Limelight, though we couldn't confirm it's still open.
- Raleigh (about 3 hours 15 minutes): Legends, Ruby Deluxe and Flex.

A few local words

- OBX: the Outer Banks.
- Soundside and oceanside: the calm bay side of the islands versus the Atlantic side.
- The beach road and the bypass: the two parallel highways through Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head (NC-12 and US-158).
- MP: milepost, which is how locals give directions along the beach towns.

No. Manteo is a town of about 1,600 people with a compact, walkable downtown around the waterfront and Queen Elizabeth Avenue. Nothing on Roanoke Island or in the Outer Banks beach towns works as a gay district.

No, and neither do Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills or Kitty Hawk. A few mainstream places back Pride, such as Old Tom's Beer, Wine & Provisions in Manteo, which hosted the 2026 Pride evening party. The nearest gay bars are in Norfolk, Virginia, about two hours north: The Wave and MJ's Tavern.

Generally, yes. We found no reports of attacks on LGBTQ+ visitors in 2025-2026, and the town hosts a public Pride festival every September. Same-sex marriage has been legal in North Carolina since October 2014, but the state has no law against discrimination in hotels, shops or restaurants, no Outer Banks town has a local ordinance, and recent state laws target trans people, so read the room outside downtown.

Small and seasonal. The local organization is OBX Pride, Inc., a nonprofit founded in 2011 that runs OBX PrideFest. Outside Pride weekend, gay life is mostly private and app-based. Dare County public health at 109 Exeter Street offers free HIV and STI testing and PrEP by appointment.

OBX PrideFest is held in mid-September at Roanoke Island Festival Park on the Manteo waterfront, and the main festival is free. In 2025 it was on Saturday 13 September; in 2026 the weekend ran from 11 to 13 September, with the festival on the 12th. The 2027 date had not been announced when we checked.

Manteo has small inns and motels rather than resorts, most a short walk from the waterfront: the Tranquil House Inn, The Pearl Hotel, the White Doe Inn, The Roanoke Island Inn and the Burrus House Inn among them. They're mainstream, gay-friendly businesses; we found no LGBTQ-owned guesthouse on the Outer Banks. Book early for summer weekends.
