Pocatello is a city of about 56,000 people in Bannock County, southeastern Idaho, sitting on Interstate 15 roughly 160 miles north of Salt Lake City. It is not a major gay destination, but it has a small, genuine LGBTQ+ community rooted in Idaho State University and a slowly liberalising downtown. The city runs on Mountain Time.
HISTORY OF THE LGBTQ+ SCENE
Pocatello's queer history is tied closely to Idaho State University, founded in 1901, which over recent decades moved toward greater inclusion, forming its first LGBTQ+ student organisation in the 1990s and adopting non-discrimination policies in the 2000s. Progress has reflected national trends but at the slower pace typical of the conservative Mountain West. The early-2000s revitalisation of downtown's Main Street brought younger residents, independent businesses and a more visible queer presence to the city's historic core.
NEIGHBOURHOODS AND LAYOUT
The centre of gravity for visitors is downtown, especially historic Old Town around Main Street and Center Street between Clark and Yellowstone avenues, where most of the bars, restaurants, breweries and galleries sit. This is where LGBTQ+ travellers will find the most activity and the most welcoming rooms, including the city's one dedicated gay bar. The ISU campus lies just south and east of downtown and brings a distinctly more progressive, younger feel. Residential neighbourhoods such as the South Hills, southwest of the centre, and the North Side across the Portneuf River fan out from there.
NIGHTLIFE AND SOCIAL SPACES
Pocatello does have a dedicated gay bar. Club Charley's, at 331 East Center Street downtown, has been running since 1997 and is one of the longest-serving LGBTQ+ venues in Idaho, billing itself as southeastern Idaho's premier queer bar. It pairs a neighbourhood bar with a small dance floor and a stage for regular drag shows, and came under new ownership in early 2025 with a stated commitment to keeping it a safe, queer space. It is the natural first stop and the de facto community hub. Beyond Charley's, there is no gayborhood as such — queer locals also gather at welcoming downtown breweries and coffee shops, and the scene is integrated rather than segregated.
Pocatello's Pride is Gate City Pride, organised by a local nonprofit of the same name (the "Gate City" nickname comes from the city's railroad history). It is held each June at Lookout Point in historic Old Town, drawing students, families and visitors from across southeastern Idaho; current dates are posted at gatecitypride.org. On the ISU campus, the Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA) student group continues to run social and support activities, though note that the university's formal Gender Resource Center closed in late 2024 under state restrictions on diversity offices — so campus LGBTQ+ services are now more limited than they once were.
WHERE TO STAY
Accommodation runs from budget highway chains to a handful of locally owned options. The Red Lion Hotel Pocatello sits close to downtown, while other chains line the I-15 corridor on the north side; downtown's Black Swan Inn is a well-rated independent choice. National chains follow corporate non-discrimination policies, and for a scenic nearby base the resort town of Lava Hot Springs, about 37 miles southeast, has its own small inns.
Idaho is politically conservative, and rural areas around Pocatello can be genuinely unwelcoming. In 2026 the state enacted a law criminalising use of public restrooms that do not match a person's birth sex, so transgender travellers in particular should take care and stay aware. Pocatello itself — above all downtown and the university area — is notably more progressive than its surroundings, and visible LGBTQ+ expression there is generally unremarkable. Caution is sensible once you leave the city for the mountains and farming country, where populations are smaller and help can be farther away.
GETTING AROUND
Pocatello is car-dependent, and a vehicle makes travel far easier. The local bus network is Pocatello Regional Transit (PRT), which mainly links the ISU campus and downtown with limited evening and weekend service. Downtown itself is compact and walkable, with most bars, shops and restaurants within a few blocks.
GETTING THERE
Pocatello Regional Airport (PIH) has daily Delta/SkyWest flights to Salt Lake City, but most visitors fly into Salt Lake City International (SLC, about 160 miles / 2.5 hours south) or the closer Idaho Falls Regional Airport (IDA, about 52 miles northeast) and drive in on I-15. Salt Lake City is also the nearest city with a substantial gay scene; Boise, Idaho's largest, is roughly four hours northwest.
FOOD AND DINING
Pocatello's dining has grown over the past decade, with independent restaurants, farm-to-table kitchens and a strong crop of breweries and coffee shops concentrated along downtown Main Street. These tend to be the most LGBTQ+-friendly rooms in town and double as informal social hubs. The cuisine ranges from American comfort food and regional Basque influences to Mexican, Asian and Mediterranean options.
DAY TRIPS AND THE OUTDOORS
The region's biggest draw is the outdoors. The Bannock Range on the city's doorstep offers hiking, camping and skiing at Pebble Creek. Lava Hot Springs (about 37 miles southeast) and Downata Hot Springs are the area's natural soaking spots. Farther afield, Craters of the Moon National Monument — a stark volcanic landscape — is about 90 minutes northwest, and segments of the Oregon Trail pass near the city with interpretive sites. The Snake and Portneuf rivers and nearby mountain lakes make the area popular for fishing and wildlife watching.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Pocatello works best as a stop on a Mountain West road trip or a base for the outdoors rather than a nightlife destination in its own right. Travellers should not expect the scale of Salt Lake City, Denver or Portland, but they will find one long-running gay bar, an annual Pride, a college-town openness and a community that is quietly more visible each year. Keep your time to downtown and the ISU campus, where Pocatello is at its most welcoming.
