Johannesburg Pride 是非洲大陸上第一场骄傲游行。1990年10月13日，數百人（據統計約800人）跟隨 GLOW（Witwatersrand 男同性戀及女同性戀組織）在 Johannesburg 遊行。Simon Nkoli 等人創立了 GLOW，這是第一個在城鎮地區工作的男同性戀及女同性戀團體。這場遊行既反對種族隔離制度，也爭取同性戀權利，部分遊行者因擔心被識別而戴上面具。Nkoli 當時表示他無法將身為黑人與身為同性戀分開看待，這句話至今仍是該日最廣為流傳的名言。
如今的活動已大不相同。近年來的活動多在 Johannesburg 的商業區 Sandton 舉行。遊行沿 Katherine Street 進行，最終返回一個設有舞台、餐飲和酒吧的圍欄式驕傲村莊，開放時間從上午晚些時候持續到午夜。入場免費，且由企業贊助：Mercedes-Benz、Google 和 Heineken 均為2026年的合作夥伴之一。2025年，該市市長參與了遊行，這是該活動歷史上第二次有市長出席。
關於其商業化轉向的爭議已持續多年。2012年，One in Nine Campaign 的活動人士在遊行路線上演了一場「靜坐抗議」，要求為遭受強姦或謀殺的南非酷兒群體默哀一分鐘，卻遭到遊行隊伍中某些人的對抗。此後，出現了規模較小、更具政治性的替代性驕傲活動。2025年，EWN 報導稱抵制呼聲仍在持續，Good Party 宣布退出，理由是驕傲活動已淪為拍照作秀的機會。
驕傲日通常定於10月下旬的某個星期六。它標誌著為期一個月的系列活動「Pride of Africa Month」的落幕，這些活動包括屋頂派對、賦權峰會以及 Queer Met——一場結合社交與時尚的夜晚。遊行大約在下午2點出發，因此建議在午餐前抵達。
第36屆活動於2025年10月25日星期六舉行，主題為「Purely, Queerly, African」。目前尚無獨立機構發布準確的人數統計。針對2024年的活動，警方規劃了約1萬名遊行者的安保措施，而主辦方公布的全天參與人數則遠高於此。Pride of Africa 及其主席 Kaye Ally 已正式宣布2026年的遊行將於2026年10月31日星期六舉行。2026年，入口將於11:00開放，遊行於14:00出發，節慶活動則持續至午夜。今年的新亮點包括：一項面向 LGBTQ+ 小型企業的商業獎學金計畫，以及在數據分析和網路安全等領域提供約500份免費認證許可證。
