What was once a welcoming space for me has, unfortunately, become something that feels increasingly disconnected from the community it is supposed to represent. I have always supported inclusivity, and I believe there is room for everyone in our community. However, I do think it is fair to ask at what point a club’s pursuit of inclusivity risks losing sight of its own identity and the people who have supported it along the way. Bears Perth’s latest social media post was the final straw for me. I found it disappointing, particularly given that much of the discussion surrounding Brisbears’ original post appears to overlook or misinterpret the points being made. I appreciate that people will have differing opinions, but I would have hoped for a more considered response rather than what feels like an attempt to publicly position the club on the right side of the debate. What I find particularly frustrating is seeing so many people applaud the club’s messaging when, in my experience, many of those commenting have never attended a Den Night and may not even be members. Public statements are one thing, but genuine community engagement requires showing up and participating in the community itself. There are also some more practical concerns that I feel deserve attention. My understanding is that membership revenue helps fund interstate judges for the Mr Bear competition, some of whom appear to have little ongoing involvement with Bears Perth. Meanwhile, the experience at Den Nights can leave a lot to be desired, from inadequate heating to food that has not been properly cooked. It is difficult not to question the priorities when the public image of the club seems so far removed from some members’ actual experiences. Similarly, a community vote was previously suggested as part of the Mr Bear competition, yet this has still not eventuated. I also find it disappointing that so many former Mr Bear Perth titleholders are absent from Den Nights, including some who were rarely present even during their time holding the title. Surely, those who have represented the community should have a meaningful connection to it beyond the title itself. More recently, I have also been disappointed by the conduct of several committee members. I won't go into individual incidents here, but these experiences have contributed to my growing disillusionment with the club and the direction it appears to be taking. Ultimately, my disappointment goes well beyond a single social media post. It stems from a growing disconnect between the image Bears Perth presents publicly and the experience of those who engage with it directly. Inclusivity and community are important, but so are authenticity, accountability and a genuine commitment to the people who make that community what it is. It is genuinely disappointing to reach this point. Bears Perth once felt like a welcoming space, and I wanted to see it succeed. Unfortunately, recent events and experiences have left me feeling that I can no longer support the club in good conscience.
