The Taj Mahal Palace is a mainstream luxury hotel on Apollo Bunder in Colaba, directly opposite the Gateway of India and the harbour. It opened in 1903. Guests choose between the Palace Wing, the original building with high ceilings and heritage interiors, and the newer Tower Wing with more contemporary rooms. There are several restaurants and bars, a pool and a spa. It's gay-friendly in the sense of any top international hotel: same-sex couples are treated like any other guests. Colaba's cafés and bars and the Kala Ghoda arts district are within walking distance. Rates are among the highest in the city, and sea-view Palace rooms cost the most.
