Bizarre Lounge BARBARA is a gay bar on the second floor of a building on Yamato-oji street in Higashiyama, a short walk east of the Kamo River near Shijo. Like most Japanese gay bars it's a small counter bar where the host (the "mama") runs the room and conversation is the main event. Kyoto's gay bars are few and scattered, and first-timers sometimes find the door hard to spot, so have the building name and floor ready. Small Japanese bars often charge a seat or table fee on top of drinks; ask if unsure. Hours aren't listed here, so check the website before heading over.

Really cool show and definitely unique, but the price is much higher than it is listed online!!! It was ¥15k per person, regardless of gender, for 90 minutes. On the website, it says ¥10k for men and ¥5k for women. So as a couple you end up paying double what it says on the official website :( I appreciate that the staff let you know your time left, so you don't unintentionally go over your time (you can stay longer, it's just an additional charge). This is definitely not a traditional "bar" experience by the way, I think the "lounge" in the name is more suitable. The staff talks with each guest while there, and they can teach you things like how to tie rope and such too.
