New Sazae has been running since 1966, which makes it the oldest surviving bar in Shinjuku Ni-chōme and one of the longest-lived queer venues in Asia. It is a small second-floor room in the Ishikawa Building. The music is mostly 60s–80s soul, funk and disco, and the crowd is a real mix: older gay regulars, drag performers, foreigners and people who drifted in after another bar closed. It opens late and fills up in the small hours, so most people treat it as a last stop rather than a first. Expect a modest cover with a drink included, and bring cash. Nights and hours have changed over the years, so check the bar's X account before going.
